Meant to be moving to Dubai in 4 weeks

We've been planning a move to Dubai for a while now. Dh's work has an office out there and it seemed like great opportunity to live abroad and experience sth different. I've got a couple of friends out there already too who love the lifestyle.

Watching the news for the past 24 hours and I'm really starting to question things. I had no idea how close to Iran it was and who knows what might happen next. Part of me is hoping it will all be resolved soon but hard to believe.

My friend who already lives there has spent the night sleeping in one room with her dh and kids scared of all the missile noises.

The problem is Dubai and parts of the middle east have been really glamorised now so everyone wants to move there.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I completely understand why you’re worried. You’ve had a huge move to organise — of course you’ve been focused on the practical stuff! The people saying “you should have known” or sidetracking the conversation into a wider debate about human rights aren’t being very helpful (or realistic) to your situation right now.
Until very recently, the UAE wasn’t seen as any more dangerous than somewhere like London (some would argue much safer due to low crime rates!). Yes, it’s close to Iran, but Iran’s capital Tehran is over 1,000 km from Dubai.

For now, I’d try to sit tight. This is all very new and no one - including governments - really knows how it’s going to play out. In a week or two things will probably look a lot clearer. The good news is that you have 4 weeks - a heck of a lot can change in that time, for better or for worse. You don’t need to decide anything just yet.

Maybe just keep an eye on the news and think through a couple of contingency plans so you feel a bit more in control; for example if you postpone, do you have somewhere to stay if needed?

And remember, your husband’s employer won’t (and can’t) send you out if it’s genuinely unsafe; they will have a duty of care to him and to his family.

Oh please, yes it was seen as a very problematic and potentially dangerous country by many of us - look at threads re Dubai going back a long time on here, this should be a very strong warning for people to do research about things rather than having their heads turned by superficial glitz

The OP should be aware now of the many issues Dubai faces, so even if the bombing stops they will hopefully realise it’s not a good move anyway,

Yes that's how it is in most of the middle east.

Yes, I know that. I just didn't realise that makes it all OK.

Wellthisisdifficult · 01/03/2026 18:07

There’s a serious serious issue amongst certain demographics (mainly left leaning women) about understanding what theyre fighting for and against

I wouldn't call Isabel Oakeshott, Kate Ferdinand or Jo Malone left leaning. To name a few who moved to Dubai and sing its praises.

CurlewKate · 01/03/2026 18:15

Jerys · 01/03/2026 18:09

Yes that's how it is in most of the middle east.

So that’s OK then!!

ClairDeLaLune · 01/03/2026 18:17

YABU to want to move to somewhere with poor human rights and built by slaves.

YA also BU for planning to move somewhere when you don’t even know where it is 🤦‍♀️

keepswimming38 · 01/03/2026 18:17

You didn’t know how close it was to Iran!! Ok well maybe you need to actually research places you’re taking your family to!

Lndnmummy · 01/03/2026 18:18

OP, pls dont be this naive when moving to another country. I moved to the UK from Northern Europe and it was hard, really really hard. I think you need to do a bit more research into culture other than supermarkets on Google Maps...

Carpedimum · 01/03/2026 18:18

I’ve said yabu because I can’t believe you’ve arranged to go and live in a place without even looking at a map and it’s come as a surprise to you that it is not as safe as people like to pretend.

NotnowMildrid · 01/03/2026 18:18

I wouldn’t go to that region of the world for all the tea in China.

But the Iranians aren't attacking Dubai by driving 1000 miles through three counties, are they?

They're lobbing missiles by the direct route over the Persian Gulf. I'd be surprised if it was 150 miles

Something like that.

Certainly if you fly along the southern side of the Gulf then when overhead Dubai in daylight and in clear weather the Iranian coastline is clearly visible not far off to the right or left, depending which way you are going....

Darwin award incoming

Booboobagins · 01/03/2026 18:20

I'd speak to the employer in Dubai and if you're still employed where you are, speak to them. Could you reverse your resignation?

What's happened is completely nuts. Iran attacking Dubai and Abu Dhabi will bring them nothing but bad.

The West's interference in the Middle East has caused all of the tragedies we see now alongside the Middle East nations not being strong in managing tyranny. I'm just thankful Starmer vetoed the use of USA military bases in the UK for the attack on Iran.

UnhappyHobbit · 01/03/2026 18:21

mullers1977 · 01/03/2026 16:04

I really hope this makes people realise these aren't places people who are used to western democracy should live or in any way support. We've been offered to live there multiple times abc you couldn't pay me to live there. I think paying taxes in grey Britain looks good to some people there now.

Edited

I’m quite surprised with the attitude on this thread when it comes to Middle Eastern politics and values differing from western culture.

Yet, if anyone says this about immigrants and worries of terrorist fractions living in the UK, it’s met with accusations of racism. Just an observation.

Morally bankrupt

Two names for you. Andrew MW and Peter Mandelson.

The UK is hardly morally better.

But they are both facing the consequences of their actions. We are very far from perfect, but as countries go in this regard, were pretty good.

emilysquest · 01/03/2026 18:23

TheignT · 01/03/2026 15:54

No not everyone wants to go there.

I would do almost anything not to go there, even fleetingly and even before this latest development. If all her friends do I find that very odd. What on earth for? It sounds appalling. And dangerous.

emilysquest · 01/03/2026 18:30

Jerys · 01/03/2026 18:09

Ah, but that’s not my point . My point is that other posters may disagree with the OP’s original choice to relocate, or judge the fact that she didn't research the geopolitics more, and/or may never ever personally want to live in the UAE, But that’s all irrelevant. Her post wasn’t asking ‘would you have chosen to relocate to Dubai’. Instead her family has ALREADY agreed to relocate there and she’s asking if, given recent events, should they cancel.

Tiddlywinks63 · 01/03/2026 18:33

HK04 · 01/03/2026 16:17

Better to be disappointed and safe than relocate to an escalating volatile situation. There will be those who have recently moved.

At least you are still on home soil so have time to shelve the idea if as looks likely it’s gonna be a zone of conflict.

Let’s hope OP hasn’t sold her house etc

And you and I wouldn’t go to China either? Am I right?

And those laws are draconian! They ignore the equality of gay people, they treat gay people as less than. That is not progressive. The death penalty is permissible under sharia law for homosexual activity. Don’t try and defend it. Dubais human rights are terrible by western standards

Again. You don't actually get executed practically. Not every country wants to or has to be progressive. It's their country. Just follow their rules. It's a Muslim country and as a base, despite westernisation, some base fundamental Islamic laws will

Dubai is a much safer to be than the west.

Ridiculous response.

Anyone can name anyone morally bankrupt in pretty much any country. You can't pull up the name of two unpleasant people and compare that to an entire nation built on lies and corruption.

As a geographer I despair. Here's a quick run down for you. The Arabian peninsular is a massive dessert with loads of oil. The result are some glitzy energy and water guzzling cities that are totally unstainable and continuing to fuel these oil producing regimes and ultimately the demise of our climate.

Then there's the fact that most ME countries are authoritarian regimes with terrible track records for human rights abuses and in particular with concern to women and homosexuals. Not to mention the political instability in the region....Arab Spring, Syria, Iran, Iraq.

Have I put you off yet?

If you’re a geographer I despair of your spelling of ‘peninsula’ and ‘desert’!

LakieLady · 01/03/2026 18:40

SerendipityJane · 01/03/2026 17:21

Don't Richard Tice - MP for Dubai - and his partner Isabel Oakeshott live in Dubai ?

Well, that's two more good reasons not to go there!

Bikergran · 01/03/2026 18:40

Well, I used to work for an NHS medical consultant who was offered a ridiculous amount of money to move to UAE and work in a state-of-the-art hospital, his wife (also a consultant) was offered a similar post and salary. Perks included a huge house with staff, private education for the children, company cars, yaddah yaddah......

He wouldn't consider it for a moment. He is an Arab, raised in the Middle East. He said it was far too dangerous and volatile a place to bring up a family.
