Uber asked DD to smell something

Last night my DD (aged 21) if she would smell something for him. It was a small container and he claimed that he wasn't sure if it smelled off or not - like it was food that might be off. She was on her own in the cab. She said no.

It seems really dodgy to me and I'm thinking the worse - like he was trying to get her to be knocked out or something. The thing is I don't know what could be smelled that might knock you out? Is there anything?

I've told her to phone the police (non emergency line) to get it logged. AIBU?

Chloroform

Dodgy as hell. Definitely call the police, I would think chloroform as per the first poster

My immediate thought was of John Worboys, the black cab rapist. He persuaded women to drink drugged champagne to 'celebrate' with him. Please report.

I would be concerned, because it's very unprofessional and tbh there's some pretty skanky Uber drivers, but you wouldn't be knocked out by just sniffing Chlororm in a bottle or similar. TTBOMK generally it has to be held on soaked material against the nose quite forcibly to render someone unconscious and isn't instant.

Yes, me too. But he got them to drink something didn't he.

Its not a normal thing for a cab driver to do, and it should be reported. Let the police worry about what the substance was.

Ffobele · 28/02/2026 21:03

A sniff of chloroform wouldn't do it (thinking back to a GCSE biology class whereby we sniffed like crazy! 🙃)

It could have been scopolamine. A sniff of chloroform might be enough to make you very woozy for about a minute, enough to render you vulnerable to an attack. I once sniffed a cotton pad with chloroform on that the vet had used to euthanise a gerbil and I ended up on the floor.

She needs to report it to the police regardless of what it was.

I would also report to uber as they will suspend him right away so he can't do whatever he might be trying to do again!
