to think we can trick our bodies into labouring in the daytime?

Could I become nocturnal and trigger daytime Labour. Scrub floors all night long, do the school run and then go to bed and boom wake up in labour at midday?

I’m thinking that might mimic the effect of its safe now that triggers night time labour for so many once DC are all tucked up.

Can’t be arsed with all the ‘might need to call you in the middle of the night’ faff with arranging childcare for the birth of DC3.

Would be very convenient to go to hospital in the daytime while kids are in school and have babysitters pick them up. Ideally it would be a dream speedy birth and Dad could get home in time to do bedtime.

For anyone who went into labour in the daytime, is there anything you think helped trigger it?

I always woke up in labour all of mine were born during day light hours. Morning to early afternoon.

However I have a very high pain threshold and even midwives Did not believe I was in labour till pretty much ready to push. So I believe I just sleep through early labour. The one pregnancy I felt contractions that where not painful I thought wrongly they where braxton hicks.

I don’t think becoming nocturnal is healthy or the answer OP 😂

Could you look at getting a planned C section if you want to pick the date and time for convenience? Or maybe ask for an induction so you have a more certain idea of when you’ll need child care?

For my second, I was rushed to hospital to be induced after a routine midwife apt but then the induction didn’t really work for two days when they got the crochet hook out. But that was perfect really as it gave my mum time to sort out coming over and looking after my eldest so it does give you some advance warning.

Everything else is likely an old wives tale and baby will come when baby pleases with zero regard for the time of day

All 3 of my kids were born in the daytime. Did make it easier.

Babies 2 and 3 were conveniently and efficiently born during childcare/school times for children 1 and 2, but labour definitely happened overnight! Baby number 3: contractions from 10 the night before, DH took children 1 and 2 to school, into birth centre by 10, baby born by 12, DH picked them up after school and we had fish and chips altogether by 5.

DC3 has mostly continued such efficiency ever since…

I didn’t do anything to make this happen though.. our overnight/emergency care was a list of people who said “let me know if there’s anything I can do to help” and I pinned them down to having their phones on overnight for a month. good luck

I went into labour with ds2 at about 11am. Baby born at 12:30pm. Not sure what triggered it though. I went into labour in the evening with ds1 and ds3 who were born at 10:50pm and 10:46pm respectively. I was induced with ds5 with the drip at 9pm which I hated because I'd been nil by mouth all day while the drs decided what to do so by the time they induced me I was tired and hungry.

Unfortunately I think babies will arrive when they are ready. Both mine were born early evening. I get with a second/third it is more convenient to be in labour in the day but ultimately no one can say how long labour will last or if you’ll need interventions etc. I would just aim to have a good team of family and friends on standby.

With DC3 I woke up with a contraction at 5am, took DC1&2 to childcare at 8am then headed to the hospital. I joked with the midwife that I needed to be done by 3pm in time for pickup. Baby arrived at noon :-)

Not sure what I did to be that efficient though!

Fingers crossed your little one gets the same memo!

I went into labour at 1pm at the end of a long walk the day before my due date. But I still needed a 3am drive into hospital.

Had a home birth with my last and the nighttime labour came in more handy-kids in bed and asleep when midwives arrived, baby born midnight, in bed early hours, kids woke in the morning none the wiser and got to meet the new baby before going to school! I’d say most convenient birth 😀

They come when they come. I have had two in the evening, two in the mid afternoon and two around normal morning wake up time. None of the labours started during the day though.

SillyQuail · 27/02/2026 21:10

I went into labour at 4am and DH drove me to hospital when DC woke up at 6.30, dropped me off, took DC to nursery when it opened at 7.45 and was back just in the nick of time for the birth at 8.15. I was home from hospital in time for DH to pick him up again at 3 as usual. Couldn't have planned it better if I'd tried!

Babies are born 24 hours a day. Your labour may start at night, but you don’t need to go shooting off to the hospital.

I had home births with both of mine, but with dc1 waters went first about 2:30am. Contractions started within the hour very lightly. I didn’t ring midwives til about 9am (this is when I would have left for hospital if I’d been having a hospital birth). She was born at 3pm.

With my 2nd, woke up at 6am with slight contractions, Dh and dd woke up about 9am, I rang for the midwife about 11am (would have gone in between 9-11am probably) and dc2 born at 1pm.

I think a lot of labour starts at night. Where babies are more likely to be born at night is with inductions, which tend to start during the day for staffing reasons. Even if you go into labour at night, you can hang out at home until more convenient hours. I was literally just hanging out until I was fully dilated. Now I would not have wanted to be in the car once the urge to push hit, but until then, I was fine.

All mine were born in the day time. Sadly the extremely lengthy labours means I was in hospital labouring all night the night before!
