Is anyone else getting sick of hearing this constantly. It’s obviously the new way to sound knowledgeable about life - to know that two things can both be true! How ingenious!!!! I’ve seen it on social media more than here on MN to be fair.

Lighthearted by the way, but it really is starting to grate! 😅😅

???

janietreemore · 27/02/2026 16:48

I'm not keen on seeing two positions polarised as though only one of them can be true, as in 'am I being selfish or is she a cheeky fucker'?
But I suppose they can both be annoying...

Hardship · 27/02/2026 16:51

I agree with you @janietreemore. Different ideas can coexist and both be technically true. However, this phrase is all over social media at the moment, in every moral discussion or dilemma. I’ve probably read it written at least 30 times in the last few days. 😅

The reason why people have to keep saying it is because of the hard of thinking that parrot out polarised, one dimensional views without the ability to look more broadly at a situation or think critically.

Yet another reason to avoid brain rotting SM

Rhubarbandcustardd · 27/02/2026 18:37

I think it’s become pertinent because we are constantly being asked to think in dualist ways and pick sides - goodies and baddies - when it’s much more nuanced

like Gaza and Israel - we don’t need to take sides we can feel for the tragedy civilians are suffering on both

Pyjamatimenow · 27/02/2026 18:40

It’s something I say but I’ve always said it. Nothing to do with social media.

Strawberryfruitstarburst · 27/02/2026 18:42

I like it, I call it the voice of reason. There are so many thickos on the internet and a take sides mentality these days. So many people voicing opinions with limited life experience or knowledge on topics.

This. I often find we are expected to have a cast iron view one way or the other on so many topics that it can be exhausting. Are you a liberal lefty or far right? Are you pro trans rights or a transphobe? Etc . However most people fall somewhere between the two extremes in most topics.

Yes - and, erm, two things can be true at once! I'm a liberal lefty and a transphobe. Knowing basic biology doesn't make me a right-wing Christian conservative. I've lost patience with virtue-signalling purity spirals, believe in free speech (or freespeach) and also don't think verbal abuse is okay. I'm fine with rich people being rich, but they should have to pay more into society. And so on.

If we ever manage to get all the knee-jerkers to accept that two things can both be true, we could try moving them on to the difficult concepts of grey areas and moderation 😏 The more advanced learners might even develop an ability to discuss and debate! That would be a relief.

Bonkers1966 · 27/02/2026 19:13

Many of us can see both sides of any given argument. Do I think vaccines cause autism? No. Do I think we should continue the conversation around vaccines and side effects for as long as it takes to resolve? Yes. Two fucking things can be fucking true at once. It's not that difficult to understand.

Vespanest · 27/02/2026 19:24

I have said it to my children growing up, mainly DD to explain friendships difficulties. To acknowledge her side whilst exploring the other perspective. I'm more concerned with entrenched thinking that cannot accept another's perspective.

Perhaps, because it is a true statement?

What is so wrong with it? People are constantly expected to choose between two sides regardless of context and nuances. There must be one right and one wrong when many things in the world aren’t like that, and shades of grey exist. It is tiring and a large reason I think things are so divisive now.

It’s also not a social media thing. You simply noticing the phrase now doesn’t make it so.

Mumofteentwins · 28/02/2026 11:42

I keep seeing it as well on social media and on here, people write it to sound clever and profound. yANBU.
