I’ve been in this job for a year. Initially it was all going ok. Over the past few months there’s been lots of change. There is a high turnover of staff and both my direct manager and his manager have left in the last 6 months. The new manager seems to have decided from day one that I am not up to scratch. I have had very little training or support for my role due to my support structure disappearing from above. But, I feel like I’m working to a reasonable standard and improving consistently with experience. The new manager is watching my every move and every breath. I feel so anxious. I have never experienced anything like this. I get blamed for other people’s errors. I get called out in front of the whole team in meetings for alleged errors. It’s breaking me down. My wife says to just quit, that this manager has decided I’m the problem and there’s no recovering from this, and just never go back.
I am really struggling with anxiety and low mood now so considering whether she is right, but feel like I can’t see the right step forward.
what would you do? Stay/work 4 weeks notice/ walk out immediately.
YABU- you need to stay and work through it, you’ll get a shit reference, etc
YANBU- save your mental health and walk out.

Give your 4 weeks notice then get signed off by your GP for work related stress. You don’t owe your employer anything at this point, so may as well at least get paid for the next 4 weeks even if it is just statutory sick pay.
You’re right to leave. No job is worth your mental health being impacted like this. Onwards and upwards 💪

If you gave yourself permission to quit, would it reduce your day to day anxiety at work so that you can job hunt while still earning?

Thank you, I hadn’t even thought of this as an option but realistically i do need to see the gp. I can’t sleep and think I need my anxiety meds increasing.

That's a good point about the reference. I agree resign, then take your notice period off sick. You certainly shouldn't allow your job to make you ill. Are you a union member? If so contact the rep for advice.

im not sure. I don’t think I could make it beyond four more weeks to be honest. I think even those four weeks will be awful and a struggle.

Do you have an HR department? Is there anyone at management level you could talk to?
absolutely you don’t have to stay in a job if you’re unhappy, but, at the same time you are being treated unfairly. Are you in a union?

Also to add, it’s quite telling that there’s been a high turnover recently, so sounds like the environment is quite toxic overall.

I think it’s too far gone. This new manager has been brought in to aggressively manage I believe. He has a reputation for this at his last workplace. I don’t see any possible positive outcome if I stay.

It really is. My two managers have left in the last 6 months and two more of my colleagues are resigning this week.

That’s a shame, but if you feel that way then you need to go what’s right for you. I hate managers like this who control through bullying. I agree with pp about going sick and dying the time to job hunt. Fuck them if you leave them high and dry - they deserve it!

Agree. A job is a job. The moment its impacting your health or your outside life its time to find ao3mwthing else

Just leave. No need to be signed by GP for one between 1000s of shits jobs. Keep moving and moving until you find the right one. Your wife has to work as well, if you cannot be the main earner

This life is very very short. Dont waste it on a workplace that is making you unwell and miserable.

Hand in your notice, and then see how next week goes. Take your remaining annual leave. If you can see the notice period through without going on sick I would aim for that.
Keep going, just for the 4 weeks, keep doing what you’re doing and don’t worry about what this manager thinks of you, keep your head down & you’ll be out of there very soon.

i can’t stand the level of scrutiny. He has put multiple people on PIPS and is really harsh with all assessment. No possible room for human error.
possibly his plan is to manage everyone out and start a new workforce.

OP, I've seen a horrible boss cause a total breakdown in a family member which has taken a solid decade to rebuild from. No job is worth this. So glad to see you're handing in your notice - no job is worth this. Preserve your mental health and get signed off sick if you can.
