Surely the shop has to honour this. ?

Bit of help needed. I went online to purchase a jacket. It was showing as 20 percent off as a special offer. I tried to order with the code but it wouldn’t work so I contacted the company who said they will look into it. Three days later they replied to say it no longer shows the discount as it was an error on the site. Nothing they can do. Surely this is wrong ? I said that can’t be right and you should honour it but they said no they can’t discount it. What are the rules if they are any ? Any help would be great. This is a very large change company

E&OE will always be buried in the terms and conditions somewhere. Doesn't make it right, but they will have covered themselves.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 26/02/2026 19:26

No it's not wrong.

If you want the jacket that badly then 20% is not ridiculous.

Mellowautumnmists · 26/02/2026 19:29

Prices on goods in shops and on products online are, in contract law, only invitations to treat (English law).

A contract is not formed when a customer adds an item to their basket but only when the seller confirms the order. This allows businesses to manage errors, such as incorrect pricing, and control stock availability.

The store in question does not have to honour that incorrect offer.

NoSoupForU · 26/02/2026 19:30

There are no rules. They don't have to honour any price. Its an invitation to purchase, not a contractual obligation.

Riverflow6 · 26/02/2026 19:31

Same in a shop, if you get to the til and it’s been priced wrong they can choose to remove it from sale from the shop floor if they so wish.

TY78910 · 26/02/2026 19:34

It’s very common for websites to say ‘20% off’ and in the fine print say ‘excluding this this and this’. Chances are that’s what’s happened and your jacket just wasn’t eligible.

ColdAsAWitches · 26/02/2026 19:36

No. There is no contract in place yet. It a common misconception, but no, they don't have to honour it.

purplecorkheart · 26/02/2026 19:40

Normally there is a clause in the t&Co that this does not apply to all stock/you need to be a first time customer etc.

busyd4y · 26/02/2026 19:41

Why would it be wrong, they can't be forced to sell you something at any price.

20 years since my law degree and pleased I’ve still got the basics of contract law!

40 years for me!!! Why can I remember things like this and not what I went upstairs for! 🤷‍♀️

Because you’re too busy still working out what a ‘carbolic smoke ball’ actually is? 😅

My daughter was actually given a drinking bottle advertising that case in her first year of uni many years after I went. Nobody would buy it on Vinted! 😂

TeamMemberNumber8 · 26/02/2026 20:06

Nah, sorry op, they don't have to do anything. I don't have a degree in law but I have worked in retail for far longer than anyone should.

RightOnTheEdge · 26/02/2026 20:25

YABU. It was a mistake its disappointing but it happens.

We have some items that are cheaper Monday -Wednesday. Occasionally someone forgets to turn the price round and there's always one customer who has to stamp their feet and say we have to honour the price because it's The Law! 🙄

I still have my novelty snail bottle of ginger beer! I don't think there's much of a market for it, but I think you can still buy them on Chancery Lane...

Well I think you’re the winner!! 🥇 👏😉

stichguru · 26/02/2026 22:09

No they don't have to honour it. If they had sold you it with 20% off, they couldn't chase you for the extra money because it wasn't meant to be discounted, but there is nothing to stop them changing what's on offer at any moment.

Aprilmaymum · 27/02/2026 06:16

So annoying but more so as I think it is a deliberate mistake to entice you in. One of my neighbours ours has said the same about the company too.
