Is UK now one big rubbish tip

im hoping I’ve only just noticed, and things aren’t actually getting worse, but where ever I drive at the moment, all the motorways, duel carriage ways and slip roads, are just full of rubbish all along crash barriers. Plastic bottles, drinks cartons, random plastic wrapping - all just building up and blowing around. I’ve never actually seen anyone litter but it must happen on mass. Who are these idiots littering our countryside, and why are they so relaxed about it. AIBU thinking there must be a growing population who don’t care about anything: how awful it looks; how many animals it kills (according to rspca +3m animals each year), the environmental impact etc.

I live in a city and it’s definitely pretty bad. I’m part of a team of litter pickers that go out every so often and the stuff we find that people have left behind (accidentally or deliberately) is crazy. It’s just become ingrained into my city though I think sadly. A while back we found a glove on the side of the road that had been dropped, and fresh double yellow line had been painted right over it, fusing it to the road. The road markings team either hadn’t seen it or didn’t bother to move it…literally ingrained in the city!

Lostsadandconfused · 27/02/2026 05:15

It’s not just the UK.

Littering was almost unheard of in Australia, but it’s becoming more and more common.

I used to live in a rural area and there was always bits of rubbish by the side of the road, even on our dead end street. Not passersby or tourists, but my neighbours, throwing cans and bottles out of a car in pristine bushland. I can’t fathom the mindset of people who could do this.

And litter on our beaches is becoming more and more prevalent. Lazy pigs who can’t even carry their rubbish 10 metres to a bin.

So much litter around, it makes me furious.

First thing I noticed when going overseas and s the lack of litter.

schnubbins · 27/02/2026 06:38

I was visiting England two weeks ago from Germany and I honestly couldn't believe the amount of rubbish at the side of the motorways and country roads Such as pity in such lovely countryside.

Where do you live then because it’s very much the reality where I live . I live in one of the Shires which is not thought of to be a deprived area but it’s now a shithole because of lazy don’t care attitudes , huge amounts of fly tipping and no council cleaning services . The only cleaning is done by volunteer groups who were never needed a few years ago . It’s very sad .

Yeah wtf is that? Why has hanging dog shit in a tree become the thing to do? Fucking weird.

I have never understood the dog shit bags in trees.

celticprincess · 28/02/2026 08:36

I actually noticed this and said to my kids yesterday that there was an awful lot of rubbish along the sides of the road. I thought it might be blowing out of vehicles carrying rubbish. Or bins that have blown over or bins in road pull in areas that haven’t been emptied. It’s not just fast food rubbish but also bits of polythene etc which makes me think of builders or similar. Not sure who really.

TalulahJP · 28/02/2026 08:59

it doesn’t help when it’s bin day and the lightweight plastic wrappers blow out when the lid is opened.

my whole front garden was FULL of other people’s crisp and sweetie wrappers, different brands to what i would have, starbucks plastic cup etc. It’s good these are being recycled but the bins are overly full as they only get emptied three or four weekly, so the rubbish is spilling out and the wind catches it. if they were half full this wouldn’t happen.

i know the council is trying to cut costs but they need to do it in a sensible way. better contracts would be a start. a metal double housing for pubic spaces that takes two wheelie bins costs them a grand. surely a Men’s Shed could make a wood version for £200. nobody gives a fuck about a bin housing si why is so much public money being spent on this. and other similar things that seem like madness.

bins being emptied so infrequently is also why rubbish is being taken by neighbours to the only public bin in the street, to keep their own household bin rubbish level down as much as possible. however that fills up the public bin so passers by cannot use it….

it’s all about money. and a lack of consequences for litterers.

Goldendaffodils26 · 28/02/2026 09:13

It’s awful in my area and much worse than ever. I live in a small town outside a city
and both areas are overflowing with rubbish. Tbf I live in an area popular with walkers and the bins are collected every day but there is still an overflow by the next day.

We must be generating more and more rubbish. That’s the problem. Also household refuse collections are fewer and maybe people don’t want to take their rubbish home. It’s only three bin bags every three weeks here and if you are a family, it’s hard even if you recycle.

EasternStandard · 28/02/2026 09:18

Horrible to hear it’s prevalent in so many places.

UniquePinkSwan · 28/02/2026 09:20

Depends where you are. I’m in the NE and it’s a shithole. People don’t care

Sadcafe · 28/02/2026 09:29

Main areas of our town are ok, but drive down the minor roads on the outskirts and it’s endless rubbish, clearly thrown from cars as it’s too small for fly tipping in the way seen on the news, but disgusting just the same

CeciliaMars · 28/02/2026 10:24

Yeah it's awful round here (naice town in South East). The less fancy areas of town, like where I live, are covered in rubbish and the motorways / A roads are awful. I think it's more visible in the winter as well when there's no foliage. I have actually organised a few litter picks myself with a few people from school, as I get so depressed at how awful it looks.
