To feel pissed off about this (salary)

I accepted a job at a salary of X amount. Received and signed contract, which says £X salary for '36 hours p/w (full time)'.

I just got my first payslip and my gross monthly pay is less than I was expecting. i.e. it is less than 'X divided by 12'. Some ChatGPT'ing has revealed that apparently in this sector it's 'normal' to quote 'spine' salaries based on a 37hr week and that my paid salary reflects that my contract is for 36hrs.

At no point was this communicated to me. My contract says 'full time'. Nowhere does it say anything about that being pro-rata. Neither was it communicated during the offer/ negotiation/ acceptance stage.

Has anyone come across this before? In my many, many years of working I have never heard of this and I'm really miffed!

Got my first paycheck of my new job today and it's the first time it's ever been right on the first go. I'm so used to it being cocked up I was expecting it.

This sounds like exactly what has happened but ao weird they didn't make it clear. How would anyone outside the NHS ever understand the system? If I got a contract with a salary which stated that 36 hours was full time I'd fully expect the full salary for 36 hours.

Because when you are offered a job on for example NHS Agenda for Change terms, you are referred to the AfC General terms on top of the local employment contract and these are non negotiable and umpteen pages long so it will be in there somewhere. Agreed hard to know if you're new to the NHS but it won't typically be spelled out as so many people just move around so the HR teams can't be working out who knows what. They just say refer to AfC national terms

They do, each band has spine points/ progressive points however you want to phrase it, usually 3 per band; the bottom, mid point after 2 years, top of band after 5 years. Except band 2 which is a flat band - pretty much inline with NMW

I agree. Your contract and your pay should match.

I suspect she did and they pointed out she hadn’t worked a full month (started on 2 Feb) so wasn’t going to get paid for a full month….

They do. Or at least they did in all the 39years I was there.
Banding and I know it changed before I left to only 3 (?) Pay points per band but the same idea.
As someone above said there were all sorts of full time hours but the basis was 37.5 hours and adjusted accordingly.
