To think I won’t need a foot muff for a two year old?

Ds is one, he was an October baby so was in his pram for his first winter.
I have a lightweight stroller that I used last summer but as the winter set in he wouldn’t keep his blanket on so I bought a different pushchair with a foot muff, however that pushchair is not going to last much longer so I’m going to get rid of it in the spring when the weather gets warmer and revert back to the light weight stroller and I’m wondering if it will be enough next winter or if I should keep the foot muff from this pushchair which would fit but not match for next winter when he’s 2, or will a two year old not need a foot muff by then?
I’m just thinking ahead and don’t want to keep something by we won’t even need by then.

I doubt a foot muff would fit a two year old, he’ll be grand with blankets!

Lighterandbrighter · 25/02/2026 19:14

Nah, I didn't use one once they wanted to be in and out of the pram all the time and had muddy shoes. We just used a bundlebean waterproof blanket instead.

BackIn20 · 25/02/2026 19:16

Just keep the old one & if it gets really cold you've got something? But if it never gets used, no loss.

GreenBananaSmoothie · 25/02/2026 19:17

I used the foot muff loads even once walking. It just needed washing a bit more often. They are sitting very still in the pushchair and if you need to go a long way (we did about 5 miles a day) they will likely get cold.

CloakedInGucci · 25/02/2026 19:21

I never used a foot muff, just blankets, warm trousers, puddle suits, decent shoes, plus a rain cover which I’d put on even if not raining but windy. And I got them to walk quite a bit which kept them warmer than sitting, but appreciate that’s not always an option when you need to get somewhere fast.
They never seemed cold.

A two-year-old might not even want to go in the pram that often to be honest

My two year olds didn’t necessarily want to go in the pram but I used to walk everywhere so if I wanted be anywhere in reasonable timeframe they didn’t get a choice!

OP Mine used footmuffs for as long as they used the pram. It can get cold just sitting down and mine were still napping in the buggy at 2.

Helpforsummer · 25/02/2026 20:30

I still used a footmuff at 2-3, with my eldest - it did get muddy but blankets just end up under the wheels in my experience. My second child wouldn't entertain a buggy after he could walk which was a joy 🫠

hallomynameisinigomontoya · 25/02/2026 20:31

Bundle bean footmuff was fab for mine at that age, it's more like an attached blanket with a shaped bpttom. water resist and fleece lined and has straps at the top to stop it falling off. We used to layer blankets under it when it was cold.

stichguru · 25/02/2026 20:34

When mine was 2.5 in winter we had a lightweight pushchair and a thick waterproof all in one suit. He liked to walk a bit, then ride a bit, then walk a bit, so it was much better to have something that would keep him warm and dry walking and riding!

BertieBotts · 25/02/2026 20:37

I kept mine until I stopped using the buggies! They often unzip at the bottom to allow muddy toddler shoes to poke out.

They get cold much quicker than adults because their body size is tiny and especially when they are sitting in a buggy while an adult is having the exercise of walking. A footmuff is much cosier than blankets. We had lovely thick ones which were almost like a big fluffy duvet.

Clementine12 · 25/02/2026 20:39

You may not even be using a pushchair of any kind! As soon as mine reached two they refused to go in one and walked everywhere!

hallomynameisinigomontoya · 25/02/2026 20:43

That really depends how far you need to go. We don't drive and walk a long way, there's no way we could have managed without a pushchair whatever my 2 year olds opinion might have been.

liveforsummer · 25/02/2026 20:50

My dc at 2 wouldn’t have liked contained in a foot muffin and it would have got filthy. We used the fleece lined waterproof trousers from Lidl whe it was cold and wet. They could get in and out as they pleased and kept dry and warm

My DD daughter was like this. Used to take the buggy for longer walks but she would walk next to it on reins pushing her doll. I don’t drive so she was walking 1 1/2-3 miles a day. DS was born a few weeks before she turned 3. So didn’t want her getting too dependent on the buggy. She still walks miles now never complains she’s tired.

Greentoytractor · 25/02/2026 21:02

I've never used a footmuff with any of my kids, at any age. A 2 year old will be fine I'm sure!

Totallyobscure · 25/02/2026 21:08

You’ll be fine without the footmuff. I’ve never had one and never felt I was missing one. I have three kids under five and I don’t drive, for what it’s worth!

flippertyflipster · 25/02/2026 21:14

Personally I was really glad to have it, my DS loved it. But we would walk for long distances and he would nap in the buggy. I liked the fact I didn’t have to dress him in thousands of layers just for the shops/cafe/nap. But equally he loved it after being active and found it super cozy. He hated mittens and being bundled up so it worked for him.

Elphamouche · 25/02/2026 21:20

We still use ours! DD is 2 next month

SP2024 · 25/02/2026 21:40

My 2 year old doesn’t fit in the foot muff anymore. But he will happily sit with a blanket now so we use that.

museumum · 25/02/2026 21:52

I didn’t have one for our Maclaren foldable stroller which we used from around age 2. Just a rain cover for very wet/windy days.

flightless55 · 25/02/2026 21:56

I’m using mine this winter for my October born 2 year old - we use the one below with a bugaboo butterfly and it’s fantastic and water proof
plus you can open up the bottom for when they have muddy boots on or if they get tad tall
it’s fab for going from car to pram as then there’s no need for bulky jackets, which they can’t wear in car

BarnacleBeasley · 25/02/2026 21:59

We still use one with our 2 year old and although he doesn't nap in the buggy, his older brother definitely did at this age and used the footmuff. He'd have kicked a blanket off.
