Applying for a supervisory role without experience?

Bubem855 · 25/02/2026 19:01

Basically, question is in the title. I have seen a job in my current field that offers brilliant perks and is very appealing. Would it be unreasonable to apply for this role bearing in mind?

I have experience in the field although I have never directly supervised anyone and part of this role is to allocate work to other team members.

What does the job spec say? Is it an essential requirement to have supervisory experience?

Is a supervisory role the same as line managing them? TBH, I don't think many people have that experience before moving up or having to manage staff. You have nothing to lose my applying. Wishing you all the best.

Everyone has to get their first experience somewhere, and finding reliable, responsible workers in many fields keeps getting harder. No guarantee you’ll get the job if there is a more qualified applicant, but you may be a better fit overall - you won’t find out if you don’t give it a go

Go for it, what have you got to lose? Even if you don't get it, it shows initiative and keenness to progress.

It's always worth applying. Do you have any experience outside work leading a group? Sports team, voluntary group, anything like that? If so, I'd mention it.
