Raw meat in sandwhich section gross?

Local Sainsbury's always puts raw meat in the fridges where the meal deal things are. Just random packets of raw meat that people haven't wanted from self checkout, the staff put on the shelves amongst the sandwiches etc I guess to keep it cold until they properly put it back where it goes but AIBU to think this is really gross?
like isn't there a reason raw meat isnt amongst the cooked foods in the first place so why would this be ok? They've been doing it for years so I don't imagine them
stopping any time soon!

Everything is sealed and vacuum packed tho
cross contamination would be unlikely

dementedpixie · 25/02/2026 16:52

Its basic food hygiene not to put raw meat in with ready to eat foods. Yanbu

You're the reason shops can't get rid of plastic packaging.

I don't think Environmental Health would like favourably upon this.
Sometimes raw meat can get onto the packaging.

Goatsarebest · 25/02/2026 16:55

It's illegal to do this. Report it to local Environmental Health.

You can separate cooked and raw without plastic packaging. Food safety is not the reason we still use plastic packaging. Strange take to have on it.

OP next time you see this take a photo and report it to environmental health

Sainsburys' food safety and hygiene leaves a lot to be desired. We recently brought their attention to packs of liver on the top shelf of a chiller cabinet that were dripping blood onto the shelves below. We took pictures and sent them to the food safety person at the Council - who visited promptly, and read them the riot act. A month later it was exactly the same, a messy jumble of packs leaking blood.

Part of the problem is the multiplicity of Nectar labels etc attached to the shelves, which must make cleaning almost impossible.

Iceland is much better, I'm sure other supermarkets are too.
