Rome with a toddler. Good idea or not?

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice. DH has a job on in Rome in the next few weeks which is 7 days long and is also the week of our DC’s 3rd birthday. I don’t want him to miss dc’s birthday so I was thinking of coming along for the week. However, it will pretty much just be me solo parenting during the day (including DC’s birthday) as DH is working.
DC is great at walking but still needs the stroller after a while.
Is Rome a good idea with a toddler on my own or am i best to sit this one out? Never been to Rome before so I’m not sure what to expect!

Sskka · 25/02/2026 10:22

Always go to Rome. I can’t think of any scenario where the answer would be ‘no’.

nondrinker1985 · 25/02/2026 10:23

Your child would love places like Villa Borghese! Gardens and playground. Enjoy and deffo do it :)

My DS had only just turned 1 when we went to Rome. He was pretty much buggy bound. He is 3 now. I would go.

Do you think a toddler would find the museums interesting?

And? Like what?! She should go to Rome.

Just with any holiday with a toddler/ small child. Have very minimal/ reasonable expectations for what you will actually get to see and do. My son had just turned 3 when we went to Venice. We mostly stayed at the campsite so pools/ slides but got some sight seeing in.

PurpleThistle7 · 25/02/2026 10:25

I would go for sure and probably would just plan on little wanders with loads of breaks to avoid dragging a buggy around. If you stay centrally it's not a huge city and you can eat ice cream and hang out in the gardens. Am sure there are loads of other options too as plenty of people live there. It's a beautiful city and I'd be happy to hang out with a 3 year old for a few days.

The toddler is 3 not 2 or 1! Go for an hour to places, travel around - you don’t have to do an entire museum. But so many beautiful places imagine the little ones brain synapses going crazy with everything they’ll see, taste, smell etc! Amazing opportunity.

Tootiredforthis23 · 25/02/2026 10:26

I would go! There’s loads to see and do in Rome. The only time of year I would avoid with young kids (or on my own to be honest), is peak summer times as it’s very busy. I’ve got 3 young DC and we’re planning on going in the next year or so.

MrsFaustus · 25/02/2026 10:27

Won’t be too hot at this time of year, lovely food and ice creams. Stuff to see even if toddler doesn’t really understand what they’re seeing. Bonus is that most Italians love small children!

Have you never heard of children’s museums? Rome has one called Explora and it looks brilliant.

Doseofreality · 25/02/2026 10:29

People who live in Rome do have children and manage just fine.

adlitem · 25/02/2026 10:30

I wouldn't choose it as a holiday destination with a toddler, just because you wouldn't get the most out of it but in the circumstances you mention I'd definitely go. Italians love kids - when we went you would often see very small children eating pasta and being fussed over even in fancy places.

Not safe. Too many scammers.

Go! Rome is a fabulous city and the people love children. I went when quite pregnant and it was amazing, I was constantly pandered to. If I have any cautionary advice it would be to have a buggy with sturdy wheels (There’s a lot of cobbles and flagstones) and stay central. Even even if your DC is pretty mobile it’s definitely a walking/public transport city and there’s only so much little legs can take. Have a great time!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 25/02/2026 10:32

Not sure it would be my first pick but you could make it work.

Personally I'd let DH go and celebrate your sons birthday the week before or after

There are many museums a 3 year old would find interesting.

Yeah, it's Rome.

You always go to Rome if you get the chance!

I went two years ago and I dream of going back and will do so as soon as I can. It was amazing, everything about it.

Please go to Rome!

StripedVase · 25/02/2026 10:34

Go, it's glorious and little children are adored.

SexIsNotNebulous · 25/02/2026 10:35

I’ve been several times and at this time of year I would.

Not safe. Too many scammers.

I never once felt unsafe in Rome.

Just avoid taking flowers and shit from people and keep your bag to the front of you like you would do in any big city.
