Why is Coronation Street not full of cars?

SayWibble · 24/02/2026 21:56

Every terraced street in Manchester has cars parked on both sides of the road.

Yet Coronation Street has no parked cars at all most of the time, despite there being no sign of parking restrictions. Where do the residents keep their cars? If they don’t have cars, why not?

What’s going on? AIBU?

Well they all work on the street. They don’t need cars

grammargran · 24/02/2026 21:59

They don't go anywhere! You never hear about them doing a school run or taking the dc to swimming lessons, or going into town. Social life is in the pub.

JustJoinedRightNow · 24/02/2026 22:00

They are missing a trick there though - given how good parking threads are, imagine a parking saga on it??

JMSA · 24/02/2026 23:23

Maybe they’re all parked round the corner on Tile Street. Or in Freshco car park 😁

Ablondiebutagoody · 24/02/2026 23:36

And how come Kev's Autocentre has been in business for 30 odd years?

Wtafdidido · 24/02/2026 23:36

Because it’s a fictional and shite tv show not in the real world

fashionqueen0123 · 24/02/2026 23:39

The same reason they can all go to the pub and leave their kids at home alone

PaddingtonsMarmaladeSandwich · 24/02/2026 23:44

That’s a bloody good point!

Perhaps they all have electric cars which are plugged in at the local supermarket car park, charging?

That would explain the continued success of Kev’s business…

NotMeAtAll · 24/02/2026 23:46

My friend lives on a street like that and it's not full of cars. It can happen.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2026 23:58

They probably don’t have cars because they’re near a tram line.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 25/02/2026 00:00

They’ve got Steve for taxis.

Tarkan · 25/02/2026 00:42

The only time you see a car there is when someone is about to get run over or they’re leaving in a taxi, never to be heard from again even if close friends or family have a massive wedding or funeral etc.

PollyBell · 25/02/2026 00:57

Why do they rarely shop or do housework? or go to school or do anything at work other that chatting

ruethewhirl · 25/02/2026 03:14

True story!! 😄

I’m also a bit perplexed, given that there are now a Sainsbury’s and a Co-op literally on the same block, as to a) how Dev’s shop is staying in business, and b) why everyone still appears to be shopping at Freshco’s? 🤔

I haven't watched soaps for years but a similar question would be how can the people in Eastenders afford to live in big houses in London when most of them are in low paid part time work and spend loads in the cafe and the pub.

Yes you wouldn't be able to afford a house in east London on 6 hours a week in a launderette. And why did no one in Albert Square ever buy a washing machine? Launderettes cost a fortune.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 25/02/2026 12:22

I haven't watched Eastenders since the late 90s, but even then I used to think it incredible that Mark Fowler could own and run his own house all from the profits of a fruit and veg stall!

x2boys · 25/02/2026 12:59

Because they are magic cars thst appear as and when the character needs it
Much like the magic bedrooms that the houses grow as required

InveterateWineDrinker · 25/02/2026 13:28

On the basis that Coronation Street is in Manchester, I would just assume all the cars have been nicked.

Its Salford actually totally separate city.

Nicecatneighbour · 25/02/2026 13:34

One of the many mysteries of the Street.
I just don't watch it anymore as the story lines and characters have become so horrible. It used to be more balanced with some good comedy. Now it just makes me cringe.

For the same reason that in "detective series" police cars always manage to find a parking space right outside wherever they are going ?

Yes and they always seemed to have enough room for multiple estranged family members who turned up, to live with them!
I often wondered why no one had a washing machine as well....

And the roads are normally totally clear for them to drive on too. Never saw Morse stuck in traffic on the ring road en route to apprehend a wrong un.
