To ask how you ask for pain relief without coming across as drug seeking?

I’ve got a painful medical issue. I am undergoing scans etc., or at least I’m on the waiting list.

in the meantime I have an appointment with my consultant this week to discuss management of the issue until then. I’m in pain all day everyday. I just want a day or two of relief to get some sleep. I would do anything - injections, hydrotherapy, and whatever I need to do. Over the counter pain medications don’t do a thing. But how do I voice this without it seeming like I just want strong painkillers on prescription? To be honest I’d rather avoid them unless it’s a very short course, because I know they can come with horrific consequences.

@justwantthispaintostop Ah, gotcha. It doesn't agree with me either tbh. As someone else mentioned, look into what good pain relief options are for your condition and enquire about those. If it's easier, lay it all out in an e-consult. You may have to try a few to see what helps, they often only prescribe a few weeks at a time as a result but that's fine. I've been through loads - my stomach is not a fan of most drugs it seems!

Have you actually asked for strong pain relief from a GP yet? If so what was the response?

The GP has denied multiple times as apparently now that I’m being seen by a consultant, the GP prescribing would apparently be them taking back treatment of this issue? I don’t really understand it thu

That's weird. There must be a process here. Email the practice manager. Ask exactly how you are supposed to request pain relief - or how you go about contacting the consultant (or more realistically, the department who will be treating you/conducting testing). It seems odd the GP won't help while you are waiting?

Agree with all the above re being very firm with the GP and not taking kinder an answer but-I sometimes have excruciating back pain. The 30/50g codeine/paracetamol is the only that helps besides actual morphine but it makes me feel so sick and dizzy that I have to take it last minute before I sleep. Can't do it during the day and function. But it does kill the pain overnight and it's like the nerves forget for a while during the day. Could that be an option?

I wanted to be taken seriously by my GP so I kept a pain map. It was just a table with me ranking my pain from mild, moderate to intense. I had a column for comments. I wasn't looking for pain meds though cos I never have any trouble getting them from doc, I was looking for doc to look at my issues holistically. It worked and I am in the middle of a number of referrals where they are exploring cause. I imagine something similar would help with helping a doc understand your pain.
