To feel almost murderous rage at my inconsiderate neighbours

I live in Devon. I’m not joking when I say it’s been raining solidly (and I mean solidly) for 45 days now. We are the worst hit area in the country, massively flooded, haven’t seen the light of day really since Christmas. It’s been bloody awful.

Today I wake up to a gorgeous blue sky and think… WASHING!!! And everyone on the estate clearly has the same idea - lots of full washing lines everywhere. Our first chance to dry clothes outside since October!

Not only that but twice a year or so I wash all my sofa cushion covers. They’re stiff fabric so it takes 3 loads, but I finally got them all done by 2pm and popped out.

I’ve just come back and some arsehole a couple of houses away has only gone and lit a massive bloody bonfire. Fucking why???? All my washing is ruined and stinks, including the sofa cushions. My neighbours must feel similarly. The first beautiful day in months, and outside reeks and is making my eyes water.

AIBU to think while it’s not illegal (as no doubt I will be told!) this is the height of arseholery, and who the fuck has a bonfire when it isn’t November 5th???

Arghhhhh

Firstly they dry quicker due to the breeze. Secondly so they don’t make your house smell damp. Thirdly so they don’t create mould issues. Fourthly so the clothes themselves smell breezy and fresh. Fifthly because you can get loads up on a rotary washing line, way more than on a rack in the living room. Sixthly because I bloody enjoy feeling the sun on my pasty face as I peg out washing. Seventhly because my house isn’t big enough for a load of dryers to be permanent features. Eighthly because my children and dog cannot reach, touch or rub against washing that has been hung up outside. Ninthly..

Totally agree. It’s not good to dry clothes inside unless you really have to. Damp and it takes ages and it can smell.

tumbles are expensive to run.

sunlight good for getting stains out.

being outside in the fresh air and sun (even if it is to put washing out) when it’s rained for eleventy millions of years is good for your mental health as well as your washing.

utter a-holes people who do selfish crappy things like bonfires on the 1 sunny day for ages.

im with you OP. I’d be fuming. The smell is horrible and it’s gets everywhere.

I need to see the facebook post

TomeTome · 25/02/2026 21:23

I can’t lie, I absolutely love a bonfire.

fetchacloth · 25/02/2026 22:13

OP that's dreadful, and really inconsiderate.
I'm really glad that I live in a smokeless zone where bonfires an incinerators are banned.

Don't they have a letter box she could use?

That would be one talented and agile dog, @NotMeAtAll!😉😂

I’ve managed to go through my entire adult life never needing to light a bonfire. What the heck do people need bonfires for even? (Excepting Nov 5th).

To burn stuff!!
what do you do with bank statements and other private stuff!?

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 25/02/2026 22:53

Sorry you had to put up with this.
Your neighbours sound like a bunch half brained trash

Nofeckingway · 25/02/2026 23:42

Not a common occurrence here. In fact I think it is banned. But I am wondering what people are burning . And how. Do they have big gardens ? Wouldn't it scorch the earth and leave big patches ? Surely plastics can't be done. And what kind of BBQ are you all referring to that bellows smoke - surely you couldn't eat any food using this type.

Shred and put in compost!

user1492757084 · 26/02/2026 00:15

Take your chops and sausages around there to cook on the smouldering fire.
Invite yourself to the back garden with a beer.
Eat and tell stories about your day and how you have washed everything twice.
Some people are major ignorant twats.

Namechangerage · 24/02/2026 18:22

My mum had a word with our neighbours for lighting a big bonfire 2ft away from our wooden fence while I had a full line of washing and my kids were bouncing on a trampoline 1ft away from said fence. They kicked off and compared it to a bbq and called my mum a c*, I just don’t get it.

Edited

I’d have watered my plants and been sure to spray over the fence drenching their fire…. If they complained I’d have said ‘what’s the issue, it’s only like rain!!’

Hayfield123 · 26/02/2026 06:33

Sitting beside a bonfire is my happy place in life, there is nowhere else I would rather be. I love the smell of it. I love the look of it and I don’t care if I’m covered in soot and ash either. However I wouldn’t light one when my neighbours all had their washing out.

eastegg · 26/02/2026 08:05

Heisminenothers · 24/02/2026 20:24

Yes and heaps of mucky straw from mucking out stables can’t be taken to the tip.

You’ve defended the neighbour in the OP though, not someone on an isolated farmhouse with stables.

So back to the neighbour in the OP. They live on a crowded estate and don’t have stables or a big estate to manage. Their neighbours had their washing out and people would obviously be enjoying the weather in very close proximity. What’s your argument for defending them?

JohnofWessex · 26/02/2026 09:00

Bear in mind that if the person who has the bonfire is abusive then call the police on 999 as it's an offence

BunnyLake · 26/02/2026 09:28

BrendaSmall · 25/02/2026 22:46

Online statements. Ink stamps to blot out info. Recycling. I have literally never needed to light a bonfire.

Tessasanderson · 26/02/2026 12:12

As with most threads on this site. Is what they are doing illegal? If not thats your hard luck. Suck it up buttercup.

I dont actually agree with what i have written above. Its just that as with anything on this website, morals, general good nature and common sense go out of the window if something isnt technially illegal.

rememberingthem · 26/02/2026 12:23

i don’t mind a bonfire but they should have been decent enough to warn anyone with washing hanging out. My arsehole next door neighbour has them all summer long, late at night where she burns her dogshit and various household items like bags of rotting rubbish and hard shell suitcases! You can imagine the smell of those bonfires!

You couldn't even suck up reading a thread that isn't illegal, without having to comment and tell people they should "suck it up".

At least live by your own silly standards.

No

Magsbd · 26/02/2026 15:41

I used to have a neighbour who had a stove installed in their conservatory. The smoke always blew into my garden leaving lots of black soot (I noticed that when it was snowing) but also the side of my house was getting it so that my nearest upstairs bedroom was smelling of smoke. I thought this was unacceptable and reported it to the council and got nowhere. We stopped talking over this and they moved away eventually but thankfully they removed the stove first so problem solved. Thank goodness as it was awful to put up with.

Not everyone owns a shredder nor has the facilities to compost stuff!

OK. Buy scissors. Cut documents into teeny tiny pieces. Walk to park. Scatter teeny tiny pieces under low growing shrubs.

daffodilandtulip · 26/02/2026 22:31

On the date you originally posted this, a house in the next street was set on fire by a garden rubbish fire that got out of hand, so they damn well should be illegal!
