Yes I am, but 48 hours after vomiting? Bit of a rant actually!

DS woke up at midnight and had thrown up all over his bed. Was then awake every hour all night. I felt awful myself last night, so am not dealing with today very well. He of course is full of the joys of bloody spring and has tons of energy. Have tried and failed to get him to lie down and sleep for a bit (so I can) - I am also attempting to work from home today and every time I start something I get hassled (I know, you CAN'T work at home without childcare!).

Nursery want him to stay home for 48 hours so my husband presumably has to go through all of this tomorrow. Arggghhh! He's FINE.

I KNOW I am being unreasonable, the rule is there for a good reason and this is the first time we've had to take time off for him (he's 3).

So I am not working but on Mumsnet because I can get away with it and know I have a long evening ahead catching up on work.

Phew, that feels better!

I know how you feel. If your DS was unwell on a Sunday night, who at Nursery was to know.... ooops, sorry, did I say that out loud??

bergentulip · 16/06/2008 21:09

Why did you tell them he had been ill?????!!!!! They would never have known...... ooops, did I say that outloud too?????

BlueBumedFly · 16/06/2008 21:19

hee hee bergentulip...

beansprout · 16/06/2008 21:20

Doesn't it depend on when the 48 hours started?

RubySlippers · 16/06/2008 21:23

the rule is there for a very good reason

D & V can spread very quickly through a nursery

yes, it is annoying but if this is the first time he has had to stay off nursery, then you aren't doing too badly

BlueBumedFly · 16/06/2008 21:27

I agree that there are rules for a reason RubySlippers, just playing. Perhaps someone could tell me why my DD comes home from Nursery with all the bugs under the sun if we are all playing nicely?

imaginaryfriend · 16/06/2008 21:34

If he was that sick in the night then he should be at home in any case as he's probably not well enough to be in nursery. Not to mention the spreading of the bugs. Some children can become extremely unwell with d&v bugs and end up in hospital so it's your duty to keep him home. YABU

bergentulip · 17/06/2008 08:07

Just messing about.... yes yes, there for a reason, I know..... but BBF has a point- this is the only place my DS ever picked up any illnesses, so it does go on!

seeker · 17/06/2008 08:11

The reason people pick up bugs in nurseries and schools is becasue people think they can ignore the rules!

And anyway, there's no way you can be sure that's where they pick up bugs - unless you keep them wrapped in sterile clingfilm at all other times.........!

mumtoo3 · 17/06/2008 08:11

i must agree, my ds had rotavirus last year and we were in spain at the time, so we had to cut our holiday short by 3 days, and he was ill there for 2 days, so these bugs dont just affect people working but can ruin a well earned break as well!!!! (if we had not have got him back home when we did he may not be here today)

not too mention people who have elderly relatives who are can get ill from it, or younger siblings the list could go on!

sorry but it gets my back really up when people send there children to school, nursery etc when they have been ill because what some parents see as a mild bug could put another child in hospital. sorry again rant over x

Barnical · 17/06/2008 08:20

Oh I am so both sided on this one.
Mostly in favour of the 48 hour thing.. we stick to it.. I'm lucky that it I can be with sick DC easily. The thing that realy gets me (rant) is I will lose money or seriously have to play catch up with work.. because my dc's have caught it from school.. where not everyone sticks to the 48 hour rule! mostly because they see school as free child care!..thus causing my DC's to pick it up again..and again! (we had the norovirus thing 4 times since september! which thats 8 days off school minimum this year alone.. I then get a letter from school saying about attendance, when I counted the days up.. yes they were right.. but dc's had the days off because of the 48 hour rule and parents who don't obey it!... aggghhhhhh!!!!!)
Parents in our school seem to be very flipant about it in compared to out last school!

But sometimes.. dc's can be a bit sick and it's not a bug and then your looking a 48 hours, when they are fine to go in and wouldn't pass anything on!

Sorry about the rant!!!!!!!

bergentulip · 17/06/2008 10:46

I suppose the rule is there because some people are thoughtless. Shame really.

Because, if every parent was sensible, and could think to themselves, 'now, is this a catching virus or just a temperature because of teething?', for example, then it would be fine.

I have been known to give my 1yr old a dose of Calpol in the morning to bring a temp down (due to TEETHING, nothing contagious!!) and then go to work. Child fine for the rest of the day, and I do not piss off bosses at work.

I know, people are going to be horrified now, right?

BlueBumedFly · 17/06/2008 14:52

No, I agree with you bergentulip, why keep a baby at home when teething when they could be having fun and learning at Nursery. The action takes their mind off of it if it is covered off by the Calpol. If I took DD off Nursery everytime she had the hump due to teething she would never be there and I wouldn't have a job to worry about!

Shoshe · 17/06/2008 15:04

The rule is there because, when a sick child is not kept home for 48 hours, the minders get the bug. Which is why my Childminding business is closed today

I have been up sice 2am throwing up and am still being sick, I will be closed till at least thursday.
