To want to tell posters who say "I asked ChatGPT for you OP"......

RudePie · 23/02/2026 15:34

To fuck right off.

I've seen it on numerous threads today.

If I start a thread, or reply to someone I want to hear from real humans.

If I wanted to ask ChatGPT I don't then I would do that.

Maybe anyone who replies with "I asked ChatGPT for you and they said....." could have an instant ban and/or a fine.

A wee bit of a tangent. This from Sky news today:

AI willing to 'go nuclear' in wargames, study finds - amid 'stand-off' between Pentagon and leading AI lab | US News | Sky News

I remember a film about this from the 80s.

Shock Hegseth has set a deadline of tonight for Anthropic to hand over the raw version of its AI for use by the Pentagon, without the safety guardrails coded into commercial versions which might prevent the AI models from going nuclear.

And Hegseth is refusing to agree to Anthropic's conditions that (a) their AI isn't used for mass surveillance of US civilians, and (b) it's not used for lethal attacks without human oversight.

From your link:
By setting a Friday night deadline, Mr Hegseth is not only attempting to force Anthropic's hand, but also do so without US Congress having a say in the move.

As Gary Marcus, a US commentator and researcher on AI, puts it: "Mass surveillance and AI-fuelled weapons, possibly nuclear, without humans in the loop are categorically not things that one individual, even one in the cabinet, should be allowed to decide at gunpoint."

Not to put too fine a point on it.

And in a timely manner, I've just watched the first episode of AI Confidential with Hannah Fry.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/m002q76b/ai-confidential-with-hannah-fry

I am gobsmacked.

I do remember the teenager who broke into Windsor Castle grounds with a crossbow to try to murder the late Queen, but I must have completely missed the follow-up of his trial.

He was encouraged to do it by his AI "girlfriend".

He knew the "girlfriend" was AI – he'd wittingly created it as a companion. And then of course it did what AI does and supported and validated him in everything he said. "AI sycophancy" is apparently an actual term now. As is "AI psychopathy".

AI Confidential with Hannah Fry

Hannah Fry takes a deep dive into some of the most extraordinary human stories emerging from the world of AI, from falling in love with a chatbot to life and death decisions made by robots.

Totally agree but I challenged a poster doing this recently - as much for the fact the thousands of word plus answer took so much effort to scroll through on the app, as for the utter bilge that was produced - and was told I was being unreasonable and mean, so 🤷‍♀️

ManchesterGirl2 · 27/02/2026 20:11

Completely agree OP.

PerkingFaintly · 01/03/2026 01:19

Anthropic didn't blink, and Sam Altman of OpenAI has publicly supported them.

Altman: "this is no longer just an issue between Anthropic and the [Department of War] DoW; this is an issue for the whole industry and it is important to clarify our stance."

The move announced on social media comes after a standoff between Anthropic's boss and the US Department of Defense.

TEARING MY HAIR OUR GRRRRRRR FFS.

I have a perfectly good thread going on, a nich subject, and someone has DECIDED AI IS THE WAY... FFS.

Now the thread is just a wall of text, none of it really relevant but get this -

I mentioned that the AI posted had an error. That someone I mentioned used a gish gallop debate method so was not sincere ... blah blah...

The poster came back with AI about if this person was a gish galloper..... WITH A MASSIVE BLOCK OF A GISH GALLOP POST.

AI does not understand irony. And really, it has no place in human debate.

Rant over :-)

RudePie · 03/03/2026 15:34

Just to add, I am not against all AI. I watched a forensics programme last night, and the obvious benefits of using AI when trawling through hours and hours of CCTV were apparent, but as @RedTagAlan points out above, it is not appropriate when just blithely copied and pasted into discussion threads on MN.

slinks away to google Gish Gallop

It’s so irritating - no AI bilge on MN please….

Sorry. I did think I should say what gish gallop is in my post, but I reasoned against it :-)

But now you have googled it, I expect you see exactly what I mean.

I like to fact check data or info presented in a discussion/debate. And AI is just a gish galloping machine. And it makes many mistakes.

CruCru · 03/03/2026 16:15

I’d never heard of gish galloping - I like the phrase.

Now you know it you will see it everywhere :-)

It's often a tactic to hide dishonesty. And people often use it without knowing they are. Just throw loads of snippets of information that it leaves your opponent with no idea where to start their reply. Hide the dishonest bits inside.

Politicians use it a lot.

I think I might feel a new user name coming on but I might need to ask ChatGPT if that's OK

OP posts:
WheretheFishesareFrightening · 03/03/2026 17:41

I’ve just posted similar on another thread.

I am largely pro AI as a helpful productivity tool, but if I wanted to know what ChatGPT would say about a scenario, I’d ask it, not come onto Mumsnet hoping someone has saved me a job…

ScrollingLeaves · 15/03/2026 22:42

Friendlygingercat · 23/02/2026 16:42

I like co-pilot. Invaluable if you are planning a counter argument or a campaign. You can feed in all the info in a completely random way as it comes to you. You dont have to worry about correct spelling or punctuation. You dont have to worry about getting the points in the most logical order. The AI will sort it out for you under appropriate headings in bullet point form so that it makes a cohesive argument. You can always change it into your own words and style once you are happy with the outline and content.

I wish Id had it when I was writing my doctorate. It would have made translating rough notes into a 1st draft so much easier. MY thesis was 180K words done without mechanical aids. I doubt if I could do that now!

Edited

It would be an interesting experiment to set up a post on a popular thread, and then to compare the answers there ( presuming most will be real human responses) with responses from AI companies’l which have been asked the same question.

Or would it pick up the mumsnet post and mine the mumsnet responses?.

Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I'd piggyback here (!!!!!!!).

Not sure what all the hostility and fear are all about. It's just some tech that can be helpful if used sensibly.

Yes, more and more people are aware of it and don't need advice about using it, but then again I remember 15 years ago telling people about this fantastic new tool called Zoopla that told you what your house (And others) may be worth. You don't know until you know or until it is ubiquitous.

I especially enjoy its responses when you point out an error or omission.

Anyway, I was really going to ask what uses people had found helpful. One recent use case was to ask it to look up a cruise in 2028, list all the ports, the arrival and departure times, the sunrise and sunset times, and the average daily temperatures and precipitation. In the past that would have taken me hours or days of tedious lookups to compile. With Chatgpt it was ready in seconds.

But can you believe it? Where does it get that cruise information from? That's the type of thing that AI often hallucinates.

Is that not what cruise brochures/websites are for ?

As an experiment, can you say where you want to go for a cruise in 2028 and I will see how long it takes me to find the info you need. I don't have AI, it's banned where I am, as as an added bonus, I am running win 7 on this laptop.

Bjorkdidit · 17/07/2026 09:51

If it takes 'hours' to find all that information, you need to improve your googling skills.

The ports and arrival/departure times will be on the cruise company website and the rest of the information on holiday-weather.com and timeanddate.com

You could find the information in little more time than it took ChatGPT and you'd see where it came from and if the source looked reliable.

Sorry to do a second reply. But this line here :

"I remember 15 years ago telling people about this fantastic new tool called Zoopla that told you what your house (And others) may be worth. You don't know until you know or until it is ubiquitous."

How often do you use that website to value your house ? Genuine matter of interest. Because last time we valued our apt, we just looked in the local estate agent window to see how much the local rate was. Then we just went into the estate agents shop and asked them.

Is that not easier then asking the internet ?

I don't use it at all now. But I celebrate the way it introduced the way to a whole load of new tools and applications to make house-buying easier.

A good example (not AI but still accessing data quickly and more efficiently) would be the area360 add-in for RM. I have all the relevant information in front of me instead of having to research each home individually.

The brochures will have ports and arrival/departure times, but not typically (if ever?) sunrise, sunset, rage tempertures and weather for each port on each day.

Please don't do this because I'd hate you to waste your time, but since you asked:

Oceania Cruises, 23 nights departing June 12th, Southampton to Stockholm.
