AIBU throwing food away

Gentlydoesit2 · 23/02/2026 06:45

Cooked a chicken dish in the slow cooker. Ate it for tea. Leftovers decanted into tupperware AND LEFT OUT OVERNIGHT 😭😭

AIBU to throw it away?
What would you do?

Throw it away 🍗

Happytaytos · 23/02/2026 06:48

Cook it properly later and it'll be fine. I'm very laissez faire.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/02/2026 06:48

Was your heating on or off overnight?

Jane143 · 23/02/2026 06:48

Depends how hot your house is. If it’s really warm I’d give it to the cat or dog if you have one. I’ve been known to take a chance and I’m still here to tell the tale, but I think official advice is to throw it away

somanychristmaslights · 23/02/2026 06:49

I’d chuck it in the fridge now. If it was summer I’d throw it away, but my house gets pretty cold at night. But I’d make sure it was boiling hot when I reheated it. DH wouldn’t eat it, but then he doesn’t eat anything past a best before date 🙄

PersephoneParlormaid · 23/02/2026 06:50

Please don’t feed it to the dog if it’s got onion or garlic in it.

Maraudingmarauders · 23/02/2026 06:56

If no heating overnight I’d put it in the fridge now and heat thoroughly before eating. In the summer or a heated house, I’d bin it.

Zippidydoodah · 23/02/2026 06:58

Chicken? Definitely bin it, sorry. It might be fine but I wouldn’t want to take the risk.

I have had dogs all my life all lived to old age eating left overs stew etc with onion in

bumphousebump · 23/02/2026 07:14

In my house it would be fine, it was cold in the kitchen last night. Wouldn’t in summer.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/02/2026 07:16

Assuming it was thoroughly cooked in the first place, it will be fine.

OnARainyDay2012 · 23/02/2026 07:20

Given it would last about a week in the fridge, 12 hours at room temp likely fine if you eat it today.

ChaToilLeam · 23/02/2026 07:26

In Winter and if kitchen not too warm, fine. Fridge now and thoroughly reheat before eating. In summer I wouldn't.

If it was fully cooked before being left then it should be okay.

IceIceSlippyIce · 23/02/2026 07:31

This time of year? Covered? Into fridge now, reheat properly, and eat it today.

Summer? (Or heating on overnight) Bin.

olympicsrock · 23/02/2026 07:31

We eat this kind of thing frequently. Never ill.

sounds like you wouldn’t enjoy it if worrying though so bin it .

WrigglyDonCat · 23/02/2026 07:43

Bring it round to me.

I'll thoroughly test it for you, and then you'll be able to live safe in the knowledge you would have been ok if I hadn't troughed the lot.

Keepingongoing · 23/02/2026 07:52

Chicken ( or other poultry) - no. I’ve had campylobacter from being careless with chicken and wouldn’t want to go there again. My GP told me to assume that all poultry is potentially infected with campylobacter/ salmonella and to follow the food handling rules to the letter. Doubt that your house was as cold as the inside of a fridge, overnight.

Harrietsaunt · 23/02/2026 08:02

Throw it away

WhatNoRaisins · 23/02/2026 08:04

My OH would eat it. I wouldn't risk giving it to the kids though.

isthesolution · 23/02/2026 08:07

Yup I’d throw it away. I don’t mess with chicken.

Peonies12 · 23/02/2026 08:08

It’s fine, I’d eat jt. What do you think people did before fridges.

I have had dogs all my life all lived to old age eating left overs stew etc with onion in

That doesn't mean it was good for them.

My grandparents lived to their 80s despite smoking all their lives, but you wouldn't take that as evidence that it's OK to give kids cigarettes. Same applies to giving dogs things that can poison them.

SJM1988 · 23/02/2026 10:44

Depends on your house. Mine is cold overnight esp the kitchen (down to as low as 8 degrees in winter) to I would pop in it now and make sure I reheated it thoroughly when eating next time. I wouldn't risk it in the summer though as the kitchen is like a sauna.

Aghast1066 · 23/02/2026 16:01

Outlook
With treatment, most dogs recover well. It’s very rare for onion, garlic or leek poisoning to cause ongoing severe problems or death.
