To cut the hair of boys with lice

Just wondering if anyone still cuts the hair of DS when they have lice? Facing a bit of an outbreak and both have long hair. TIA :)

YANBU, cut it off. My girls got bobs when they came home with head lice 🤢

SexIsNotNebulous · 22/02/2026 14:16

If you like their hair long and they do too then you both need to start regularly nit combing and using tee tree products and tying their hair up.

my DS always had short hair and never had lice, DD had them twice and nit combing after a hair wash and tying hair in tight plaits was an every day routine for years.

Helpforsummer · 22/02/2026 14:23

My daughter had them last year (and gave them to me 😭) she's got bum length thick hair, it was horrendous. Shes getting a few inches off soon and I'm hoping I can persuade her to get a couple of extra because I think I'm still traumatised by it 😂

If my son got them it'd be a number 2 all over, he's not bothered about his hair, it's an absolute pain in the backside. So I guess it depends if he's particularly attached to his hair.

My daughter kept catching head lice when she had a bob. Granted it was quickish to deal with but I encouraged her to grow it out so we could keep her hair tied back and she hasn’t caught them since.

When hair is clear use leave in conditioner - the nits can’t cling on

Yep I did. Close cut shaver on. Problem solved. 👍. Different with girls 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Fatiguedwithlife · 22/02/2026 16:48

I couldn’t shave DS’s head!
Just a normal short haircut is enough, takes 5 mins to go through it with a bit comb.
(Dealt with numerous infestations over the years with 3 DC and nitty friends!)

DaisyChain505 · 22/02/2026 16:53

Do they like their long hair. That’s the question.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/02/2026 16:57

If they (and you) are attached to their long hair then within reason you need to deal with it. But you can absolutely insist that they tie it back to make it less likely that they catch them again

my 2 boys have shortish but not shaved hair and haven’t caught yet.

MeganM3 · 22/02/2026 17:02

Long enough to tie back or very short.
Mine had lice with very long hair and it was easy enough to kill them, pretty hard and tiring to comb them all out! I stopped washing their hair more than once every 4 or 5 days and they never had them again! Don’t like the natural hair oils apparently.

oviraptor21 · 22/02/2026 17:04

Nope. Just nit-combed them twice a day.

Londonmummy66 · 22/02/2026 17:08

Neither of my DDs got lice despite having long hair. I used to do it in two high plaits and then twist each plait into a bun on the top of their heads.

Ablondiebutagoody · 22/02/2026 17:38

Just shave it off and start again clean

How embarrassing for them

Does this apply to girls too? My boys would be devastated if I shaved their hair off. Yes nits are a pita when their hair is past their shoulders, but I isn't see shy I should treat them with less autonomy over their hair that I would daughters?

TimeForTeaAndG · 22/02/2026 18:43

Get the Hedrin spray and deal with them. No need to cut all their hair off!

lljkk · 22/02/2026 18:56

One time within 20 minutes of discovering lice on DS hair, the lice & eggs were all gone. Due to Number 2 shave and 5 minutes of louse/egg hunting.
Number 2 was Just shorter version of his usual hair, though.

I hope you get it sorted quickly, OP.

My ds would be more devastated to have lice and eggs on his scalp and would want them gone asap, so would be fine with shaving it off. On the basis that it grows back etc. etc.
I agree that it's the kids decision though.

Tableforjoan · 22/02/2026 19:10

It doesn’t actually remove the eggs though does it. Unless you’re going to make him bald. You still risk eggs. Also way to out your child as the nitty kid unless by some magic they have been asking for weeks to shave all their hair off.

Just condition comb with a nitty gritty and use defence spray.

For girls I do plaits for school with defence spray and hair spray. Also use a defence shampoo.

No one ever suggests it with girls tho, and most of the "just cut it" comments don't mention the child's choice at all. That's my point. Altho there was one family who had persistent nits and after literally years of it (thankfully DS is immune) Mom did just that and cut it terribly short. Poor kid. Think Mom was fed up of school complaining as she hadn't done anything about it previously

lifehappens12 · 22/02/2026 19:31

Yes - not shaved off but very short and my son hasn’t had them since. A few years ago I got them from one of my children and will thick curly hair I will not repeat that experience for the sake of my sons own hair!

TheGrimSmile · 22/02/2026 19:32

I gave my ds a crew cut when he got headlice. It depends on whether they mind having their hair chopped off.

gamerchick · 22/02/2026 19:33

Yep clippers here. Job done. First time my youngest got them he was a toddler and there was no way he was going to let me faff on with nit combs.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 22/02/2026 19:37

I wouldn’t. My DD1 has long, very thick hair. I managed to clear her hair of lice within a week. Less time probably but I did the treatment and combing for a week to be certain.

sunnysunshinebear · 22/02/2026 20:01

Currently have this issue with DS, he has short hair which is bad enough! I actually said I’m not sure how I’d cope with long hair and head-lice. Praying my toddler doesn’t get them who has beautiful curls! DS1 said he’d be happy to shave it all off…..! We have used treatment and combed a lot today!! Will continue this and hope for the best! It would be so obvious if he went it to school with a shaved head tomorrow and is of an age where appearance matters (hair styled/ certain clothes ect!)
