AIBU to think grown men loudly swearing in public just look… pathetic?

I was at the train station earlier and a small group of men in their fifties were being incredibly loud and laddish. Two of them in particular were swearing constantly, every other word was an F‑bomb and laughing like they were performing for an audience.

It wasn’t anger, it wasn’t emphasis, it wasn’t even a heated conversation. Just loud, pointless swearing for the sake of it talking about everyday stuff and laughing their head off. It felt so unnecessary and intrusive, I don't want to hear it. I don’t buy the lack of vocabulary argument because the swearing wasn’t replacing anything it was just added on top.

They just looked ridiculous. Like men trying to relive their twenties but without any self awareness. Why the Christ behave like that in a public space full of people who haven’t chosen to be part of your performance?

AIBU to think it’s not edgy, not funny, not rebellious, it's pathetic and embarrassing?

YANBU. I call it ‘manscreaminng’. That stupid loud I’m-such-a-lad-me voice they do because they can’t bear not to be the centre of attention

I think is disgusting , showing my age but men rarely swore in public when I was young

There were two women at it too. Not with these men. One yelling "Karen! Karen!" and Karen telling her to piss off. They weren't as bad as the guys however.

I agree. I can't stand people shout/talking where every other word is a swear word. It just makes someone look thick as pigsh*t IMO.
I've got nothing against swearing but surely you save the best ones for when you really need them....i mean how do they 'swear' when they have to?

Cel77 · 21/02/2026 20:40

I find swearing so crass, as if you don't know enough vocabulary to express yourself.
Loud swearing is even worst, as it seems to mean "look at all the space I'm taking without you being able to do anything about it ".
Hate it. It makes people look really dumb and disrespectful

They didn't need the swear words though. They were lobbed into the conversation at random, totally superfluous.

Come out with my husband, he has no issue at all telling people to stop swearing, how he’s not got punched I don’t know. He also explains to them if needed that it’s a criminal offence.

You’d be surprised how many people do actually stop if you ask them though!

mumlong · 22/02/2026 06:50

It’s fair to feel annoyed when loud, constant swearing in a public space feels intrusive. Not everyone wants to be part of someone else’s “performance,” especially in a shared environment like a train station.

Weirdnailhelp · 22/02/2026 06:52

Good job you don’t live in Scotland. A lot of people here use f for every second word. I hate it.

Barrellturn · 22/02/2026 06:55

I love a good swear. But there is a time and a place.

rwalker · 22/02/2026 07:03

See it all the time definitely grim nit exclusive to a particular gender

CharlotteRumpling · 22/02/2026 07:07

Anyone swearing in public is pathetic. I detesr the large groups of loud swearing teens on the Tube these days. It's the last thing you want to hear when you can't even get away.

Boomer55 · 22/02/2026 07:07

Any adult swearing in public always looks a bit sad and pathetic. It doesn’t make them look very intelligent. 🙄

blubberball · 22/02/2026 07:09

There was probably alcohol involved

I don't mind people swearing in private convos. Even convos with me. Just not jammed up on the Tube or in public.

I'm currently on holiday with DP, our friend and his latest female companion (early 40s) She does this, I don't like it at all and find it embarassing but I don't think it's just men, although I do know middle aged men who do it too. They've usually been drinking though, she doesn't drink!

Seedlingsparrow · 22/02/2026 08:00

There is a lot of research to show that swearing, both in real life and on social media, quickly escalates into ‘hate speech’. You see it on MN all the time. The posters who are very sweary are generally full of hate for a particular group ( often men).

Swearing, insults and hate speech: the social and psychological power of taboo language

Cursing may be rude but it’s also powerful – it can even raise your pain threshold.

Interestingly, research from the University of Liverpool shows a very definite link between personality disorders like narcissism and posters who are sweary on line. The university uses Facebook and Reddit as the basis for research. Very sweary posters are more likely to have personality disorders like narcissism.

That's interesting because Stephen Fry is a big fan of swearing and doesn't hold with the argument about it demonstrating lack of vocabulary.

I agree, and I am not against swearing in the right context as sometimes it makes you feel better but when swearing becomes part of your normal vocab it makes you look really, really stupid.

Also I think people dont realise that when you swear constantly it ceases to have the impact you want it to. Eg if someone says the F word every time they speak you become desensitised to it. If someone says the F word who never swears you know its serious and it makes you take notice.

PollyBell · 22/02/2026 08:19

Can't say I think grown women swearing sound impressive either

I have nothing against the odd word but every second word being a swear word sounds ignorant

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/02/2026 08:23

Yes, but I’d say the same about women swearing loudly in public.
