10k steps is easy ?

Angels1111 · 21/02/2026 15:16

I find that if I'm doing normal day to day housework I reach 10k steps quite easily - today for example I'm already on 5k from cooking lunch, washing up, doing laundry, putting laundry away and a bit of dusting and tidying. I've still got more to do so feel like I'll easily get to my 10k without trying too hard.

If I go for a walk/gym etc I usually get to 15-20k steps.

I'm basically wondering whether I'm doing too much housework compared to the norm 😅

It’s that it tracks your wrist action! I once sat and gave myself a manicure and hit 50,000 steps through filing my nails!

Morepositivemum · 21/02/2026 17:57

10k steps is actually quite active (just for the people out there who are disillusioned!). We once had a manic morning in work at Christmas (pound shop, very very busy, up and down stairs, out the back etc etc) and after it we were laughing that we’d only logged aBout seven k steps. You don’t blink and 10k are done as some people suggest!!

If you live in a small house or flat it's difficult. However when I lived in a city, I found 10K steps easy, far easier than now, when I live rurally. I was talking to a health professional about this and he agreed that it's easier to walk a long way when you're in a city, simply because things are within walking distance. As an example, I lived within half an hour's walk of three branches of M&S when I lived in a city. Where I live now, the nearest is 8 miles away, so about three hours' walk in each direction.

We found this too. Living in the city we did twice as much walking as we do now living very rural. That includes chasing animals and having an acre of garden. You don't actually walk anywhere as part of your day. You either go somewhere for a walk or have to set time aside to walk around the often unsafe rural roads. Even using public transport in the city involves walking to and from stops. I was back in leeds for a week and walked everywhere.

I track my steps. I average 17,000 a day and the highest so far this month was 51,000 in a day.

I only get about 4,000 steps or so from a whole day of housework and that’s if I’m doing loads like gardening work, big clear outs and lots of labour intensive batch cooking.

51000 is about 25-26 miles. That’s not a normal amount of walking. Either that’s exceptional so not worth the mention or your tracker is inaccurate. Even 8-9 miles (17000 steps) seems unlikely for an average unless your job is guiding walks.

I just looked at my step count for the day I ran 52k and it was 64k steps. So that 51k of yours must have been at least a marathon?!

Perhaps very? It's only 2 bedrooms....

I clean my Dads house from top to bottom every Saturday, a 4 bed detached. I do the laundry as well and put it away. I do about 2000 steps!

igelkott2026 · 21/02/2026 18:08

When I stay at home I am hard pushed to get to 3000 steps. Today I have done about 15,000 but that's mainly because I walked to parkrun, ran parkrun and walked back.

When I go to the office I do about 14,000 walking to and from the station at both ends.

I have to make an effort to get my steps in. Some of you must live in mansions to do that many steps at home.

sprigatito · 21/02/2026 18:08

My Fitbit records kneading dough as steps. I suspect your Garmin is doing something similar (unless your house is actually a castle and you’re the only cleaner).

Yes I have this when I visit my mum, she lives in a village with few pavements, so if I want to walk more than a mile loop (or go for a run) I have to get into the car and drive somewhere. I always struggle to get my steps in when I am there.

Barney16 · 21/02/2026 18:12

If I'm at home and I do housework 😕 it's about 2500 steps. I only get 10, 000 in if I go for a big walk.

ScaryM0nster · 21/02/2026 18:13

Might be helpful to see if your phone also tracks steps, and put it in your pocket for a day and compare watch and phone.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 21/02/2026 18:14

"...51000 is about 25-26 miles" or put another way at 3.5 mph thats 7 hours solid walking. Please tell us more.

FuzzyWolf · 21/02/2026 18:20

As lots of others have said, the watch is tracking the hand movement. I remember when I tidied up some toys and was filling up a box with them; I did hundreds of steps despite being sat on the floor!

Housework is a good way to keep active but there are better ways to exercise and get genuine steps.

And 3.5 is quite brisk. 3 is more average. Over a long walk, or walking with others, 2.

Exercise and steps aren't the same thing.

TheFormidableMrsC · 21/02/2026 18:24

I work in a school and I’m on my feet all day. I walk to and from work, just over a mile each way. That gives me 10k and then I do extra in the evening. I think your tracker is inaccurate.

cardibach · 21/02/2026 18:23

Quite. Saying "I did 51000 steps" doesn't mean anything I'm afraid.

SixteenFortyeight · 21/02/2026 18:27

I'm on my feet all day in a busy primary school classroom, walking between tables and activities, outdoors for playground duties, walking between buildings during the day etc, but my Fitbit still only counts 3000 steps max by the time I get home in the evening. It is technically sedantry despite not being 'seated' work, I'd say.

I do another 1k doing cooking, tidying and sorting out DC (ours is a small 3 bed semi) after work. Before bed I get on my walking treadmill at the fastest setting to make up the remaining 6ish k which usually takes about an hour of walking at pace while catching up on some telly.

HotChocCreamAndMarshmallows · 21/02/2026 17:31

Absolute twaddle

If you don’t actually walk anywhere it will be difficult, if you do it will be easy.
You need to live a remotely active life for it to be easy, as I said if you drive everywhere, sit down all day and have to go in a pointless loop walk just to get some steps in you will feel like it’s effort.
Anyone who struggles to walk 7km over an entire day is not as active as they think they are.

goz · 21/02/2026 18:29

cardibach · 21/02/2026 16:42

I was a teacher before retirement so on my feet and moving about all day - round the classroom, about the site etc. I could get to 7k that way. Not 10k. And as I said it’s an arbitrary target anyway.

Standing doesn’t equal walking though. As a teacher you’re never really moving very far, it’s not actually particularly active.

I stand at my desk, it doesn’t mean I’m being active.

Rewis · 21/02/2026 18:32

I struggle to get to 10k unless I go for a designated walk. I would get to that doing housework only if I was doing a big cleanup that required tons back and forth to the recycling and rig clenaing etc.
I really don't get to 10k without noticing 😂

Rewis · 21/02/2026 18:36

I feel like several years ago the aim was 20k daily, no?

Neevr heard about 20k target. I've obly gotten that if I've gone for a hike or had a city break where we walk everywhere. Never on average daily life day.

SummerInSun · 21/02/2026 18:40

I have a Garmin and love it (forerunner 963, I think)? When I start the day with a jog from home to work, which is 7km and takes me about 50 min(I’m slow! Also stop at traffic lights etc), I’m usually about 10,000 steps when I arrive. And right now my average step count for the last seven days is on almost exactly 10K steps and average distance is 7km. what is your watch saying about your distance each day? Hard to see how you can walk 7km in a two bed flat?!

I suspect your Garmin isn’t properly calibrated.
