Is living on the state pension really that bad?

I mean, if you own your home then you’re getting around £250 a week just for bills and spends.
i have a tiny pension and DH has none. I am always worrying about this but then realised that we will have no rent or mortgage to pay.
im just wondering if it would be as awful as people make out? I hear stuff saying you need £300000 in pension pot to have a comfortable retirement, why would you need that much?

Clearly not that disabled going swimming, to the gym and doing DIY yourselves in between all your socializing . let me guess both claiming carers premiums on pension credit for looking after each other too?

Edited

I get PIP …I go swimming…I do some bits of diy….and guess what ? …l meet up to socialise with my mates 😊

Can't you just stay with your family in Australia?

It's a bloody long way to go just to stay in someone's house. Which might not be in a particularly nice place.

She has some savings, and acknowledges she will have to whittle them down and go on pension credit. She is in a council house and still has to pay rent.

Would it work if you moved in with her? Or she with you?

I have not lived local to her for 16 years. We have our own support networks where we are now.
If I lived with her, and she dies, I would be homeless, as she is in a council property.
She can't live with me as she runs her own company that is local to her.

I imagine it depends on whether you want to survive or actually enjoy life?

People can enjoy life without spending shitloads of cash lol.

If it's £250; a week yeah than easily. It's much less than I spend now.

Depends if you have savings? What if your boiler needs replacing? What if your roof leaks or your windows need replacing? Are you running a car?
will you be stuck at home or will you want to enjoy having days out/ holidays/ treats?

I live alone, receive state pension and small private pension, can’t afford to retire and still working full time, a bit soul destroying

Living on the state pension is fine with two of you.

I won't be able to afford to live here if DH dies, despite being mortgage free. £1000 a month won't cover my council tax, bills and food.

That's where I would be ok I think. £125 council tax, £60 gas/ electric, £15 water,, £10 phone out of £1k ( estimate) that still leaves me £790 a month. And won't be using heating in summer

https://www.retirementlivingstandards.org.uk/

This is a really helpful guide.

£40k isn't for a basic life, it's for a comfortable life as a single person household.

This is nonsense as most people raising children paying mortgages/rent don't have this to live on! The authors are living on another planet.
Most couples can live on state pension if they own their own home. Single pension is harder to live on but most can have a moderate life on a lot less than 40k

As a single parent I am entitled to £1100 a month from UC if I don’t work.

That is to pay my rent, CT, utilities, food and clothes etc for both me and my DC, transport etc literally everything.

Having £1000 a month for only 1 person, with no rent and fewer other bills like free public transport, no CT etc I would be absolutely laughing.

Is that because you don’t own your own home?

I don’t know how it works - do you not get extra help to pay your rent or are you expected to pay it out of the state pension?

Just a mystery how you and others are so vocal about what they can do to the point where they have a more active life than the average person.

Heard the phrase on munsnet 'invisible' disability. But if it is so invisible it doesn't impact someone's life you can see how people are somewhat baffled.

Im wondering if we are on different hymn sheets?

Of course when I go for a HOLIDAY, I will indeed spend as much time as I can in families homes, and that's why I have flight money saved, and now saving spending money

When we go, which is when mum passes , I will have to pay for cats, dog and hens to be cared for - which is grand, Im factoring in those costs , because when we do go it will be for a month

But this is side tracking a thread about "Living on a State Pension "

It’s good to stay active with or without a disability

Hereforthecommentz · 21/02/2026 21:32

It's £176 where does it say £250? No I couldn't survive on 176 per week just to pay bills and have food it wouldn't even cover that.

Why would there be no council tax to pay?!

Absolutely. But if you are able to be active you are doing so due to perseverance and effort which is great. Money doesn't change your ability.
