Kid is sick, then carries on into family attraction

I'm just interested in what other people think.
A kid, pale as a sheet, walking slowly, threw up just before the entrance to a family attraction this morning. I'd say they were about 9yrs, with mum/dad/siblings. Not much sick, mostly liquid, so presumably they had a fairly empty stomach. Dad gave the child some water to rinse his mouth and the family carried on into the attraction and headed straight to the toilets. Dad was walking alongside him. Mum didn't bat an eyelid and stayed with their other 2 children.

Aibu to think they should've gone home? I'm just curious as to what others think when they see a kid throwing up in public when about to embark on a half term day out in a busy place with lots of kids! Or is there probably a reasonable explanation for the kids sickness, other than a gastro bug?

My daughter used to suffer terribly from travel sickness. It was probably that.

TadpolesInPool · 20/02/2026 19:46

I would always wash hands thoroughly during and after a day out like that. Regardless of what I'd seen!

But yes, both my DSes get very travel sick, plus one had severe reflux for YEARS plus they both get migraines and are sick with them (yay us!). So we are incredibly blasé about them being sick. We know what is illness sick and what isn't.

Travel sickness...my dd used to be sick to avoid school just after covid..the moment school said bring her in despite her being sick was the day the sickness ended....she loves school now. Only sharing to say sometimes it's not what you think ..think in this case travel sicku

Sensiblesal · 20/02/2026 19:51

Sorry it flicked me to wrong thread

Kirbert2 · 20/02/2026 19:55

Travel sickness was also my first thought or between chemotherapy treatments where sickness can kick in and they are just trying to have a normal day out between hospital stays.

Morrisdancer24 · 20/02/2026 19:58

I think it's none of your business really. Sounds like travel sickness to me. I am sure if mum didn't bat an eyelid it's probably a regular occurrence.

Hankunamatata · 20/02/2026 20:01

Friends daughter get very travel sick even on short car journeys but still wants to go places. They avoid eating and she has a bucket for the car. They just have to get on with it

FlamingoFloss · 20/02/2026 20:02

Could well be travel sickness. This was very often me as a child

MissRaspberry · 20/02/2026 20:03

I mean to be fair unless you've asked and know for sure then you could just as easily assume he could have been travel sick. To be fair you assumed he had a bug and should go home.two of my kids get travel sick too which was discovered on a bus travelling to Skegness on holiday. Imagine someone saying I should've taken my kids home and not carried on to our booked caravan on the holiday park we had just arrived at when my son threw up on the bus after we'd travelled on two trains and the short bus ride to get there

NotTonightDeidre · 20/02/2026 20:06

Oh I love travel sickness.... or not.
I'm 47 and can still be found in the toilets of a service station heaving my guts up.
I've tried most travel sick meds/gimmicks & none work for me.

TaliaTalia · 20/02/2026 20:06

I’m emetophobic so completely understand you wanting to gather opinions (and quite honestly I’d be horrified and want to go straight back home if I saw that too).

With that said, both me and my youngest child get horribly travel sick and I have an older son with a medical condition that causes random unexplained vomiting (so this is pretty much the most ridiculous phobia I could have 🙄). We’ve had multiple days out that have started with someone vomiting but thankfully it’s very easy to tell whether it’s an illness or just travel sickness/a flare from my son. I try very hard to make sure it’s kept as private as possible so it doesn’t upset other people but that doesn’t always happen because kids are unpredictable (such as the toddler who stepped off a bus and immediately projectile vomited into a Greggs the other week which was an absolute nightmare to deal with)

Hope the general consensus that it was travel sickness has reassured you ❤️

Probably travel sick 🤷‍♀️

Timeforaglassofwine · 20/02/2026 20:08

Yab extremely u. Its no busienss of anyone's except for the child, their parents and pediatrician. Could be travel sickness, could be chemo. Let's hope its travel sickness. I was always the kid being sick in the hedge on arrival btw, it was embarrassing enough without judgement from random strangers.

Motomum23 · 20/02/2026 20:10

My youngest vomits with anxiety every time we do anything different, I used to take her home straight away but it's not fair on my other kids so she's sick then gets on with it.

Yeah my parents always had to factor in extra time to allow for the first hour or so me throwing up and feeling like shit. I still suffer now but I get around it by being the main driver on any long journeys.

superchick · 20/02/2026 20:19

DD has coeliac disease. She throws up if she eats gluten but is usually alright once its all up. If we were on a day out she'd need to sit it out for a hour and drink some water and she'd probably be able to crack on depending on the activity.

Lots of reasons why kids spew that arent catching.

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 20/02/2026 20:21

My 12yo randomly throws up sometimes. Isnt ill, its just something he does. Also both kids get travel sick and throw up after a car journey
Am sure its not nice for anyone who sees it, we carry sick bags and try to make it to a loo but sometimes it can't be helped

Snap 😭 it sucks doesn’t it!

Sarah24x · 20/02/2026 20:26

Ds has problems with very large tonsils and often gags/vomits when eating. Was in a restaurant recently where he was eating a chip. Suddenly started gagging and projectile vomited all over me. 😥
People were looking shocked and probably thinking I was a lousy parent bringing a child with a sickness bug out to eat which wasn’t the case.

Maybe the child had travel sickness.

Mapletree1985 · 20/02/2026 20:34

If there's a bug going round, you are going to encounter it. One sick kid going home will make no difference; you're still surrounded by dozens or hundreds of people who are infected but just haven't felt the symptoms yet.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2026 20:37

YANBU.

They shouldn't have gone in. Vomiting or diarrhea bugs can spread like wildfire.

The child himself probably just wanted to be home in bed with a barf bowl by his side.

User9767475 · 20/02/2026 20:41

Emetophobe here and I would also hate to see that! However if the family seems very desensitised to it then it's probably harmless. A child who normally isn't sick but suddenly gets sick in a public place will send most parents into a tiff because they know it's a virus or worse. It seems like the family barely reacted so they've seen it before.

A genuine question for those with kids who have travel sickness (or had it themselves)...do most families still plan long trips despite the fact it would almost certainly put the child through a lot of nausea, stress and discomfort. It sounds cruel to me knowing that a child reacts badly to a situation, yet repeatedly forcing them to go through with it. It's like knowing a child has gluten intolerance but forcing them to eat bread and suffer the consequences. I could never get my head around why some families are happy to let a sibling be extremely travel sick on trips instead of avoiding it somehow.

Obviously, from a certain age they can make their own decisions just like adults can decide to go cruising despite seasickness. But it seems very odd to force young children into car journeys where they will inevitably be sick and they have no way of defending themselves. If you put a child through any other sort of situation where they ended up sick (violence, force feeding, neglect) then you would probably be reported for abuse.

Womaninhouse17 · 20/02/2026 20:43

There are many reasons why a child could be sick. Sometimes it's just excitement or nerves. I used to teach and one of my pupils suffered from stress. Sometimes they'd throw up just waiting to come into the classroom. I expect that the parents of the child you saw knew what was best for their child.

It's not necessarily a bug or anything infectious.

BuildbyNumbere · 20/02/2026 20:45

If he was sick due to a bug surely would be unwell also and not able to walk around the park?!?
