Find myself so windy after a flight

It's definitely got worse since I've got older. What happens to your stomach on a flight that means you just wanna fart for the next two hours?

I’m the same. I think air expands inside your body cavities.

Paraguay · 19/02/2026 23:07

Thank god it's not just me!

Have you ever seen an unopened packet of crisps on a plane? I rest my case 😆

Theonlyfatmiddleagedwomannotonmonjaro · 19/02/2026 23:11

As ex crew i can confirm wind is an issue. All I will say is...be nice to the crew or it may be besides you they let rip 😉💨💨

Or n opened bottle of water with the lid on too tight?

It's an air pressure/cabin pressure thing.

Glaspeated · 19/02/2026 23:13

I had this on a flight to Eastern Europe. I got off the plane and the first thing I did was run to the toilet as I really thought I needed to go. I then sat there for five minutes loudly and repeatedly breaking wind. It was horrendous.

HappyValentinesDogtanian · 19/02/2026 23:13

I see what people mean about the crisp bags and water bottles! But I’m wondering why it gets so much worse as I get older? It’s not worse when I’m not on a plane… definitely worse when I am though, it’s actually really painful.

I don't understand this

You swallow pressurised air at altitude (usually as you eat or drink), and it expands as you descend. Its the same principal behind why you ears pop as you descend, the pressurised air expands in your ear & escapes.

The pressure difference makes the water expand. The bottle will suck in on itself on the way down as the air pressure changes - if you loosen the lid it won't. I'm talking about purchased bottled water like a plastic bottle of Evian e.g.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 20/02/2026 08:04

Yes me too.

Kind of one of the reasons the toilets after you land at Heathrow are so grim.

Paraguay · 20/02/2026 08:42

Aaah. Thanks.

In the movie "Airplane" I think the phrase as they commence take off is "Let the fart fest begin" 😂

SunnyRedSnail · 20/02/2026 08:48

Changes in pressure!

To balance your ears you swallow which opens a little tube between inner and outer ear.

To balance your tummy pressure you fart!

benten54 · 20/02/2026 08:50

I’m a regular ultra long haul flyer. I get wind something chronic. I get an aisle seat because I have to go and let rip in the lavatories every hour or so.
Having also been in first and business several times I can confirm it makes no bloody difference (not that it would…)
I will continue deflating for at least 24 hours after a flight. People will say ‘don’t eat carbs or drink alcohol’ but FFS what else is there to do on a flight (except fart)
If everyone’s asleep I just pump into the seat… It’s agonising otherwise and the seatbelt stops fitting!

Also ex crew aeons ago, but still remember the company doc during our training telling us that this would happen, but to make sure we didn’t discharge our X ccs of foul gases in the first class cabin!

Overtheatlantic · 20/02/2026 09:05

I sat in front of someone who farted from London to Orlando, and the crew actually came round with air freshener. He kept ordering mint tea and farting away. 🤢

Paraguay · 20/02/2026 13:04

While not wanting to be indelicate .. it's not the smelly type. Presume gas not in there long 😩😆

I flew an 10 hour flight recently and had such bad wind, so much I stopped going to the toilet and did it in my seat it was every few minutes!! It had no smell to it (which is why I ended up staying seated)

Paraguay · 20/02/2026 21:16

Lol

OSTMusTisNT · 20/02/2026 21:20

I usually end up in agony with a bloated belly, I think I'm that crushed up and sitting for so long it all gets stuck inside me, must get stuck in a corner somewhere!

I hate getting out the seat in case I end up splatted against the ceiling so tend to stay trapped with my seat belt on.

Paraguay · 20/02/2026 21:57

Maybe we will all go into orbit

Not on the flight but on the way to the airport. I'd eaten a big breakfast before I got on the bus. It was so hot and crowded that I ended up farting with every bump in the road.

You swallow pressurised air at altitude (usually as you eat or drink), and it expands as you descend. Its the same principal behind why you ears pop as you descend, the pressurised air expands in your ear & escapes.

The pressure is higher on the ground. Your ears pop as you descend because the ground pressure is higher.
