Home alone movie - Mandela effect?

Lostinspace13 · 19/02/2026 10:10

Can anyone clear something up.

In the first home alone film. You know the scene where the robbers follow Kevin up the street in the van. Kevin runs to the church and hides in the nativity scene. Marv and Harry are asking where he went and one of them says that Kevin might have home into the church. Then Marv says “I’m not going in there, that place gives me the creeps”.

Well apparently, he didn’t say it gives me the creeps. Loads of us can remember her him saying it but I can’t find any evidence. Clips on YouTube suggest that he didn’t say it.

Perhaps there are different versions?

Can anyone remember or has an old copy of the film?

Yanbu - Marc did say it gives me the creeps
Yabu - He definitely didn’t say it

I think they might have edited it out for some markets and then all. The notion of a church giving someone the creeps was seen as being too anti Christian or something?

I'm sure I remember him saying something gave him the creeps. I saw it in the cinema and maybe about 5x on TV.

I have a very distinct memory of watching a TV mini series with my mum, sometime in the late 90s/early 00s. It was an adaptation of a favourite novel of mine. Anthony Andrews was the male lead. The female lead had an unusual name and I remember thinking “oh, that’s how you pronounce it!” Except this series was never actually made. I can’t find any reference to this series on line. Doesn’t appear in Anthony Andrews’ filmography.

Can you remember the book's name?
I like a challenge!

Whaaaaa? The song We are the Champions definitely says ‘of the world’ at the end. Am I being thick and misunderstanding? The Queen one?

You’re not being thick but the smart move would have been to listen to the song before posting 😜

MysticHalfWitch · 19/02/2026 16:39

@malmiok now I’m even more confused 🤣. I’ve beetled off to Spotify and listened to the bloody thing, and read the lyrics, and it definitely says ‘of the world’!

MysticHalfWitch · 19/02/2026 16:40

@malmiand now it’s stuck in my head and I’m playing air guitar instead of working.

MysticHalfWitch · 19/02/2026 16:41

@malmi …… ahhhh hang on, you mean RIGHT at the end!!! Ok yes I agree, I thought you meant at all 🤣😂🙈

Tink3rbell30 · 19/02/2026 17:15

BringonSpringnowplease · 19/02/2026 17:34

You should check them for non existent lines of dialogue to see if any of them is also priceless!

Good idea, there's bound to be others. Only heard of this one today, never noticed it was removed 🤯

Apparently you’re not alone and lots of people remember it but it was never in the movie.

Like Of the world was never sang at the end of we are the champions but many myself included would still argue blue in the face that it was.

It isn't really a mystery, when they do it live, they end with "...Of the world"
Radio stations back in "the day" used to play a wider range of versions of songs, because DJs used complications, including the live tracks.

Now everyone is listening to the album track, which doesn't have it.

I think Of the world was sung at the end of the musical We will rock you version, so maybe people are thinking of that version

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/02/2026 10:18

This is part of the problem with the Mandela effect! There are different edits of films for different countries, DVD releases etc and one person will be absolutely CERTAIN that something is said (and right) and someone else will be equally CERTAIN that it is not said (and also right).
Depends which version you saw. Or heard.

A lot of films from that era have multiple different versions without "officially" having a directors cut or similar.

Primarily it's because films had to be edited for video anyway, to fit the aspect ratio of the TV better, so you didn't end up with massive great bars at the top and bottom of the picture. So while they were doing that, they might make some small tweaks to the actual content of the film as well, sometimes on purpose, sometimes by accident, using a different take etc.

And then they'd get edited again to be shown on TV, so they'd fit into a particular timeslot better, or to leave more sensible gaps for adverts.

It happens less often these days as we've all got widescreen TVs, so the difference between a cinema aspect ratio and our TV isn't as drastic. And they're mostly streamed digitally, so don't have to worry about ad breaks etc.

Films are still edited differently for home use than cinema, but it's mostly done at the same time as creating the cinema version, so the content is less likely to be changed. Plus the internet means that people are much more likely to notice and complain when a change is made.

Sartre · 20/02/2026 16:23

I’m pretty sure he does say it. We watch it every Christmas and I do recall that line…

On another note, DH and I thought Olivia Colman was called Olivia Colman Walker for years. We both have distinct memories of her adding Walker to her name, we assumed through marriage but we can’t find any evidence of this whatsoever. Super weird we both thought the same for so long.

hairbearbunches · 20/02/2026 16:29

Definitely edited out. Not sure how old my DVD is, but it's not in it. I just checked. But... I remember the scene was them in the van, speaking. Now, it's the voices but the scene pans back to the nativity while they're speaking and pans across to the tree on the left hand side. This has definitely, definitely been edited. Fucking woke, man. Where will it end?

verabarbleen · 20/02/2026 16:31

I thought he said it about Kevin when he walks in front of the van “that kid gives me the creeps”

Not right at the very end 😄

HarryVanderspeigle · 20/02/2026 16:36

I remember being quite surprised at watching the unedited Grease film. It had a couple of more naughty lines cut from the 80's TV version. I thought I knew pretty much every line.
