New look jumper has bobbled so quickly

I bought an 100% acrylic knit jumper from new look on the 8th of this month. So 10 days ago. I’ve worn it 4 times and haven’t washed it yet (I shower twice a day and wear lots of deodorant). I went to put it in the wash and realised that it’s really bobbly at the waist and arms. I think that this is ridiculous? I appreciate that it’s an inexpensive jumper but 4 times wear for bobbles? If I sold it on vinted I could only label it as good. I’m not going to sell it but just for context. AIBU to think that this is ridiculous?

Get an electric debobbler - they work really well. But anything made of fluffy-looking artificial yarn is inevitably going to pill badly.

Glitterballofdreams · 18/02/2026 19:06

Take it back!

Reinventedblanket · 18/02/2026 19:07

Ha funnily enough I was just thinking this about a new look jumper I bought (before Xmas but not worn it loads) I rarely buy anything new but loved the colour and it's awful, now looks like a bobbly orange rag.

Angelic999 · 18/02/2026 19:09

I bought some New Look work trousers and they have bobbled after a few washes and now I can't wear them for work. I'll stick to M&S from now.

TwoUpTwoDown · 18/02/2026 19:10

The same has happened to one I bought from there after only two wears and one wash. I am considering taking it back.

goz · 18/02/2026 19:12

I’ve honestly found anything I’ve bought in the last 6 months from various places has bobbled badly after a handful of wears. I’ve an arket jumper, a new look cardigan and a Primark jumper and they look awful after such little wear. It’s pissed me off so much how shit everything is getting.

Moneymadness · 18/02/2026 19:15

honest that’s what happens with cheap clothing…

fancytoes · 18/02/2026 20:36

A de-bobbler is what you need.

And some natural fibres!

llikeyourbum · 19/02/2026 08:26

Can anyone recommend a debobbler?!

Katemax82 · 19/02/2026 08:42

I had this with a beautiful coat from Tesco about 14 years ago. I wish I'd returned it

Nonsense. I've got loads of cheap jumpers that haven't bobbled for years

I bought myself a Phillips one, it was about £15 from Amazon.
Got it because I bought myself a loose knit type of cardi one day on my lunch break at work when I was chilly in the office and it went bobbly under the arms (common place for bobbling because of the friction), it’s brilliant but I do keep having to use the debobbler - one day the fabiric will be so thin there is disappears 😂

KellySeveride · 19/02/2026 08:46

Do you use fabric softener? Sometimes it kills clothes. Stop using it 😆

It's not just cheap clothing. I bought a coat that was £100 before the sales, lasted 1 winter before it was so bobbled it was only good for dog walking. I also recently bought a cardigan for £25 in sainsburys that has bobbled after half a dozen washes. I consider £25 for a cardigan to be mid-price, not cheap but not expensive.

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 19/02/2026 08:47

I find anything with a lot of polyester or acrylic is only fit for the bin after a couple of wears. I've had some reasonably expensive (for me) weird fish and brakeburn jumpers look like rags very quickly. Marks and Spencer jumpers also go like this. I find a debobbler helps but is better on wool or cotton. Can you take your jumper back or at least leave a review as they might actually improve the quality if enough people complain

Not just cheap clothing though, not any more. I have the same problem with clothes from M&S and Next.

Ninerainbows · 19/02/2026 08:48

I've got a 100% wool jumper from Celtic and Co which is lovely and soft but also bobbles like mad. I think this happens with any jumper that isn't cotton. Take it back if it looks shabby though!

Boomer55 · 19/02/2026 08:50

I don’t like New Look jumpers - they never wear well. 🤷‍♀️

Disagree.

HidethebiscuitsitsNellie · 19/02/2026 08:53

I’ve had jumpers from Asda that bobble after one wear. I took the absolute rubbish straight back.

InterestedDad37 · 19/02/2026 08:56

Don't be tempted to run the debobbler on your forearm skin 'just to see what happens' 🤔 I have run this experiment on your behalf, and I don't recommend it 😂

BellRock1234 · 19/02/2026 08:57

I had this with a £40 jumper from Debenhams, maybe 15-20 years ago. I had only worn it once, and never normally spent that much on a jumper. They refused to take it back because I'd worn it.

Boycotted them from then on in. Fuck you Debenhams.

Yes, me too - I was bought some very expensive jumpers from reiss for Christmas and one was so pilled after being worn on and off for 10 days that I’ve been to wary to get the others out of the packaging. Have also invested in a de-bobbler as it does make a difference - but eventually the fabric will become too fine.

Am disappointed as I was pretty sure I saw an item on the TV with that chap from the Sewing Bee explaining that jumpers should last years and that the mix of yarns was important. Thought I had chosen accordingly, but clearly not.

suburburban · 19/02/2026 09:10

It’s the way they seem to be made now even if you pay more, perhaps shorter fibres?

i have 10 year’ old cashmere from Pure and JL no bobbles but newer stuff is bobbly unfortunately even when not yet washed

i never buy acrylic though

ExperiencedTeacher · 19/02/2026 09:20

Yep, had this with one New Look jumper almost immediately. Another, which I wear more, is fine. I think it must be down to the type of fibres.
