Does anyone else have a neighbour whose dog just barks constantly when left?

The constant barking is driving me demented. They bought this dog during Covid and anytime it is left it starts barking continuously. It’s worse during school holidays as he takes the kids away and mother goes out leaving it to bark endlessly.

We currently have a reasonable relationship but this is going to test that I think.

In the past I have made comments. They are clearly aware their dog does this because a few weeks ago they asked my daughter if she would sit round at theirs to stop their dog barking whilst they went out. She declined and they still went leaving their dog to bark all evening.

Not sure what you can do really if they know that the dog barks and clearly don't care. Poor thing must be stressed 😕 could you report to the council for noise pollution?

OonaStubbs · 18/02/2026 14:33

This is one of many reasons why dogs should be banned.

Probably best to ban idiots from having dogs if they don't care for them, poor dog needs a vet check behavioural assessment you can report to environmental health for noise.

MissMoneyFairy · 18/02/2026 14:37

Why can't the dog go away with the dad and kids or out with the mum.

Pancakesbythedozen · 18/02/2026 14:39

Do yourself and the ddog a favour and contact the council. They don't care about neighbour relationships so why should you?. Had similar here and a letter to our ndn sorted things mostly. The odd time but not the 4x up to an hour every day barking.

its2025 · 18/02/2026 14:40

I dont have any answer but you have my sympathy as I have the same issue. near neighbour to me leaves their dog outside for hours on end and it can be barking at all hours as I believe the owners work shift patterns. A fellow neighbour has complained to them direct and several of us have reported to the local dog warden but nothing has changed. You could try your local dog warden - but form my experience it doesn't appear to have any impact.

I have similar, neighbour has a yappy dog and works shifts, two kids who live there most of the time (one 22, one 14),

when they are in the dog barks and the neighbour shouts at it, when she is out it barks itself into exhaustion.

postman comes, it barks, someone walks past the house, it barks, car drives past. It barks, they take it for a walk, it barks, someone in my house coughs or sneezes. It barks.

only thing it didn’t bark for was when they had a rat in the house!

I find it so stressful. Neighbours on other side of them no longer speak to them because of the dog, but I don’t know what to do about it.

Peoplemakemedespair · 18/02/2026 18:16

Yes. But now I’ve gone and bought some ducks so now we’re even 😂

Damnd · 18/02/2026 18:23

But what do you do? I'm new to having a dog and worry he barks when I go out.. what is the solution? Does anyone know

NotnowMildrid · 18/02/2026 18:26

My friend’s dog did this. She didn’t know until the neighbours told her.

All credit to my friend, she quite promptly found the dog a suitable home, because she realised it wasn’t fair on her neighbours or her dog.

I hope you manage to get peace. It must be horrendous for you 💐

kurotora · 18/02/2026 18:28

It’s such a rubbish situation to be in. My friend has a dog who suffers separation anxiety and she’s driven to distraction feeling awful about it, tied to the house, knows the neighbour is annoyed at her, working with a behaviourist etc. Neither she nor her neighbour are unreasonable.

The question is, what would you want your neighbour to do? They likely know and are embarrassed. If they can’t solve it - are you going to ask them to get rid of the dog?

Splendid solution!

longtompot · 18/02/2026 18:42

We did, for the past 2 years, but she and her yappy dogs have just moved and it's so quiet. It was really awful and we didn't know if we were better off with the dogs, or with her noise when she was home 🫣

MabelAnderson · 18/02/2026 18:47

I rarely left my dog, and never for long. He seemed relaxed when we got home, until a day six months or so before he died when we arrived home and he was by the door looking anxious. The next time we left him I could hear him barking in a high pitched, stressed way as soon as we pulled up in the car. I had my suspicions that he’d been like that for a while. After that we never left him alone, sometimes that Winter we took him in the car and checked him regularly. It wasn’t for long as he was an old boy and died the following Spring.
I think most dogs hate being left alone, it’s just that as owners we don’t always realise, if they seem fine when we get back. My current dog is usually with me, or with a dog sitter if we need to all be out for some time. She can be left for shortish periods as she is getting a bit deaf, so she will snooze on the sofa and not notice that I’m out, she probably thinks I’m upstairs.
If a dog is barking non stop and the owner doesn’t care though, that’s really difficult. All you can do is talk to them again, and maybe another neighbour would also say something?
An old next door neighbour of mine left his dog alone all day, and he would often howl or bark. Neighbour was horrible though, he just didn’t care .

Gallusoldbesom · 18/02/2026 18:51

I know this might sound a bit mad, but if it’s a nice, dog (just very anxious when left) could they leave it with you if they’re going out? Presumably then it wouldn’t bark. If you’re not dog people, have allergies, a cat etc then that wouldn’t work, but I know I’d rather have a peaceful evening with a nice mutt asleep in a basket than being driven insane listening to constant barking. I am a dog lover though so am biased!

Michmuch · 18/02/2026 18:54

Exact same thing happened in our old house. The neighbour left the house at 6am for work and on cue every day the dog would bark constantly for hours. I talked to her quite politely at first - I think she thought we would just put up with it. I ended up reporting a noise complaint and thankfully the council were brilliant. I had to download an app and record the noise, they then sent her a letter within 2 weeks at which point she sorted a dog sitter 'at great expense'. She wasn't happy but clearly she didn't care about neighbourly relations so I didn't either. You have my sympathies as the noise drove me up the wall

MathsMum3 · 18/02/2026 18:57

They are clearly aware their dog does this because a few weeks ago they asked my daughter if she would sit round at theirs to stop their dog barking whilst they went out.

But do you think they're aware of the severity of the situation? I would try to gently explain to them that the dog barks CONSTANTLY while they are out. i.e., all the time, 24/7 - make sure the message gets through, and also that the barking is very disruptive and upsetting for your family.

Bonkers1966 · 18/02/2026 18:57

Best to contact the council and maybe an animal charity. Apart from your poor nerves being shot the dog is probably in distress. Don't allow this to continue.

CanTheWorldSlowDownPlease · 18/02/2026 18:58

We had new neighbours move on with a dog.The first couple of days they went out to work and left it on it's own, it barked nearly the whole time. I spoke to the lady when she returned and politely asked if the puppy was young and it barked a lot when left alone. All credit to them, the dog was never left alone all day again. They used a combination of it going to work with her and a dog sitter.

TalulahJP · 18/02/2026 19:30

i had a barky bastard next door for ten years.
i staycationed as not well paid and was woken every day when the mum left for work unril she returned.
it was horrific.

then it died. thank fuck. and they got another one. sigh. at least she wfh now so not out as much.

stupid ignorant selfish people.

Jellybean23 · 18/02/2026 19:33

Report them to the Environmental Health Officer on your local council. They will take action.

rainandshine38 · 18/02/2026 19:41

I feel like I might start a neighbour war if I report them and that will also stress me out. I’m disadvantaged either way.

Use the fact they asked your DD to dog-sit to raise the fact that the barking has become a non-stop problem when they're out and ask that they do something about it. Frame it that you're concerned about the dog because it sounds really distressed - because it almost certainly is.

Our NDN leaves their dog locked up alone for up to 12 hours at least four times a week but because it doesn't bark there's nothing we can do for the poor thing.

Glitterballofdreams · 18/02/2026 19:50

Our neighbours dog screams, howls and barks the entire time he is left. It’s a single man and his dog, and the man tends to work nightshifts so we get the joy of this noise all evening and overnight. The poor dog has severe separation anxiety and although it’s very annoying, it’s quite upsetting to hear too.
