Due to road closures on the day of the party, would it be safe and reasonable to collect supermarket buffet sandwiches the day before and serve them the following day? Obviously kept in the refrigerator. Most supermarkets I’ve looked at say eat on day of collection.

TIA

If you collect at say 5pm then serve the following day at noon then it's within the same 24 hour period I guess?
They may be a little dry at the edges though.

Shoxfordian · 18/02/2026 09:19

I would expect it would be fine, they probably just taste better the day before

Swiftie1878 · 18/02/2026 09:31

They’ll be absolutely fine.

BudgetBuster · 18/02/2026 09:48

Technically they'll be fine. They would obviously taste better made and eaten the same day. The only difference is bread might be a little harder but there's no health implications if you keep them refrigerated

Thank you for your responses

No, absolutely not. Sandwiches should be freshly made.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 18/02/2026 09:50

When you get them home, remove the top of the platter and lay a couple of pieces of kitchen roll over the top that you have lightly sprayed with water. Pop the top back on firmly. That should hopefully stop the bread from getting dry on the edges.

B1anche · 18/02/2026 09:51

They won't kill anyone but the quality will be pretty poor after a night in the fridge.

Screamingabdabz · 18/02/2026 09:52

Bread goes proper hard and stale in the fridge so I wouldn't. They’ll be horrible.

PineappleMelon · 18/02/2026 09:54

I’d make my own in that situation, or collect from a different supermarket. Old buffet sarnies aren’t going to look or taste great.

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 18/02/2026 09:54

They won’t be unsafe. But they won’t be very nice the next day.

Glitterballofdreams · 18/02/2026 09:56

It would be most disappointing if they were spoiled by the time of the party, it is a bit of a gamble.

I did want to make my own, however we have labradors (who moult like hell) and I am very conscious of not wanting pet hair in the buffet! No matter how many times we clean and vac per day, there are always rogue hairs in the home and I would not like to risk even one hair being wrapped in a sandwich.

It depends on the filling, anything wet like salad, egg etc will make the bread soggy on the filling side of the sandwich.

Tulipvase · 18/02/2026 10:05

Are Pre packed sandwiches from supermarkets only kept for one day? I’m assuming you are buying a platter from the likes of Waitrose but can’t see it’s much different?

BrendaSmall · 18/02/2026 10:08

They advise to eat on the day of purchase as they’re usually made the day before so by the time you eat them they’ll be 2 days old! YUK!!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 18/02/2026 10:15

Could you buy mini pasties instead?

UninitendedShark · 18/02/2026 10:18

Check with the supermarket that they will have them in the day before. They usually come on an evening/ overnight delivery for pick up the next day.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 18/02/2026 10:20

Just a tip for the future, but we often buy the meal deal sandwiches when we're entertaining but feeling a bit lazy! That way we can have a better selection, cut the sandwiches in half a couple of minutes before people are due to arrive and also get crisps and chocolates and drinks to put out on the table too. If you shop wisely, you can get some great deals....

I'd rather risk a possible stray hair than have guaranteed dry sandwiches.

scabbyfanny · 18/02/2026 11:01

Why would they be dry or inedible? Most supermarket/garage sandwiches have a 72 hour shelf life so I wouldnt be too worried

DonnyDoris · 18/02/2026 11:40

We got platters from Costco for our work Christmas buffet and due to timings had to store them in the fridge overnight for the party the next day. They were perfectly fine and not dry or soggy at all

Do you regularly have dog hair in your meals? Surely you could keep the dogs in a seperate room for 30 minutes and wipe the counters before making sandwiches?

lol no we don’t often have a dog hair in our food, I’m just feeling paranoid about the possibility, as it is for guests at a party (not held in our house).

Could you ask someone else to pick them up or make them for you?
