Tummytroublesagain1 · 17/02/2026 19:38

Jesus it’s absolutely relentless. Poor thing is struggling so much. I was up at 4.30am with her today, she was vomiting mucus which had collected on her chest overnight. She’s so full of snot

so far we have done

vicks on chest
Vicks on feet
cough medicine (basically sucrose)
calpol - for the headache
humidifier in the bedroom
calpol plug

the coughing is constant!! And I mean constant!!

no temperature and kind of ok in herself

but the cough is like torture. It physically hurts me, but of course it’s a million times worse for her

any suggestions that I haven’t already done?

Nasal spray? Might help.

Lammveg · 17/02/2026 19:42

Honey before bed?

Might be childhood asthma?

Tummytroublesagain1 · 17/02/2026 19:42

Sorry I should have said she has steroid nasal spray from her ENT consultant - it’s run out and waiting for the GP to prescribe new

She has a long history with ENT, tonsils & adenoids removed at 3, grommets fitted and a constant low lying runny nose, which is the reason for the steroid spray. But this is something else, a really heavy cold and cough

I find my PND improves a lot if I cut right back on dairy produce.

TattiePants · 17/02/2026 19:48

Is she allergic to anything? I have post nasal drip due to a dust allergy so try to keep my bedroom as dust free as possible. Would she sleep propped up instead of lying flat which helps the mucus pooling at the back of her throat? If it’s any consolation, I suffer much less from April-October, basically when the weather’s warmer and the central heating is off.

Ragingoverlife · 17/02/2026 19:48

Nose spray. Dries the snot and stopped it going down the throat.

Another vote for cutting dairy and … as a long time sufferer, bear with me on this one

if uou can get them to swallow a crushed clove of garlic with a glass of water every morning for a fortnight, there is every chance that the post nasal drip with be gone and the sinus dried up nicely.

Bellaunion · 17/02/2026 19:52

I find antihistamine really useful for this. My 4 year old always get this plus the antihistamine helps him sleep!

She is very adventurous with her food and will try most things, but I might struggle with this 🤣

Have you considered trying some treatments for silent reflux? Such as drinking ginger tea with manuka honey and spraying the nasal passages with sodium bicarbonate diluted in sterile water?

I'm assuming you've cut out all mucous forming food and drinks?

LashesZ · 17/02/2026 19:58

Antihistamines are great for drying you up - I often give to my DD after a post viral cough as they seem to last what feels like centuries

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 17/02/2026 20:07

Yep, we give my son piriton for bad coughs, and it works a treat.

Tummytroublesagain1 · 17/02/2026 20:12

Thank you! Antihistamine deffo the way to go then

Mine always got a horrific cough post bug. We were prescribed montelokast. It worked wonders. No side effects reported here.

Kiwi09 · 17/02/2026 20:28

Put some books under the foot of the bed to lift it up so that all the mucus isn’t draining into her chest. Also, google postural drainage techniques using pillows or cushions. These definitely can help night time coughing.

Peridoteage · 17/02/2026 20:39

How old is she?

Sudafed liquid (the proper sort which has pseudoephedrine in it) dries out mucus membranes so actually tackles the cause of post nasal drip (unlike calpol etc or cough syrups which are just symptom relief). But she needs to be 6+. Ask a pharmacist about it - you can buy it at the counter. Its fantastic for nasal congestion.

Why does this work? Why mornings? Can it be done before bed? Can it just be eating a clove a day with food?

FinallyHere · 17/02/2026 21:00

@firehorse68262 I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to those questions. I was surprised to find it worked for me, to rid me of a post nasal drip which had caused me a very bothersome bought for many, many years.

having found it to work, I have not investigated any aspects and don’t really have the resources to test scientifically. I’m not even sure how a double blind tests could be set up. Pass it on in case it helps anyone else.

I’ve just been happy to know about it and

DrEmilyCrabtree · 17/02/2026 21:20

As a long term sufferer, with a dc who also suffers things i have found

Avoid too much dairy
Drink orange juice
And the one that helps DC most, piriton before bed.

Good luck. It is horrible

Tummytroublesagain1 · 18/02/2026 07:40

Thanks everyone, another disturbed night. When one of my girls is poorly they sleep with me, I’d never be able to settle otherwise

lots and lots of coughing in the night, so much snot. DH gave her a drink of warm milk this morning, which resulted in 2 bouts of projectile vomiting 🤦‍♀️

so shower, hair wash and a load of smelly clothes in the wash all before 7am

im definitely giving her piriton this morning after she’s finished her breakfast and also going up to the pharmacy to try and get her some liquid Sudafed

and definitely no more milk 🥛

have a look online into eosinophilic esophagitis. See if the symptoms fit. If so have an appointment with the GP
