People who don’t use their drives. Why? 😆

I’m really curious about this. I doubt it’s just my area. It doesn’t annoy me or anything like that, but after living in a terrace with on street parking for years, I love having a drive now and can’t wrap my head around people who don’t use theirs. There’s a house a few doors down with 2 cars always parked on the street, while their drive sits empty. I’ve been living here for nearly a year, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a car on their drive. I only noticed because one of their cars is always parked on a bend, forcing everyone to drive on the other side of the road to get past.

My whole estate is like this, with cars scattered everywhere, on pavements, and drives just sitting there empty. I know that some people don’t want to play car jenga, having one car in the drive and another on the street, but not using it at all seems a bit odd. Houses with parking usually cost more too. I feel more at ease knowing my car is safer and less likely to get damaged. It also frees up more space for guests.

I don’t know, I just think it’s a little odd, but what can you do. I don’t think there’s a law that saids you have to park on your drive haha. Is there anyone on here that does this? 😆

We have a residents car park, some of my neighbours still park on the street - makes no sense because my insurance wax considerably lower because of the car park, apparently it’s lower risk than a drive because would be thieves don’t know which house to break into to steal the keys

Sorry what I mean is that you will save money on insurance because the premiums are lower for drive vs street (I think) and that's also because the drive is considered safer.

But I suppose, that said, that the insurance company won't know whether someone is parked on their drive or not!

According to Martin Lewis website, it's actually cheaper to park on the road. Apparently down to something stupid like sometimes driveways are more secluded and thieves can hide better! I paid more and park on my driveway.

GnomeDePlume · 18/02/2026 16:43

A neighbour got rid of her drive, something to do with her garden being smaller than when she first saw the house 🤔. So she absorbed it into her garden. Now she and all her adult DCs park on the road/pavement directly outside her house.

Her house is at the entrance to the cul-de-sac on a dog leg corner so sometimes the bin lorry cant get through.

She is an entitled arse in many ways so I always take the time to dob her in to council/DVLA when the opportunity arises.

floppybit · 18/02/2026 17:30

It’s because people don’t want their neighbours parking outside their house, so they will park outside their own house even though they have a driveway.

TBH, I have a strong objection to dropped kerbs and off-street parking altogether in many places, particularly busy towns. On new estates fair enough, but the selfishness of taking a whole stretch of parking out of use on town streets - and even worse if the owner doesn’t even use the drive - really pisses me off.

I’d favour a law that allowed parking across a drive if there’s no car in it at the time.

Just as selfish as using a car instead of public transport if you look at it that way?

People pay to have a drive, of course they can use it, and yes, they need a dropped kerb to access it.

If you want a drive, garage space, pay for one!

Gloriia · 18/02/2026 17:43

Drives me mad all the street parking. Going to visit anyone usually involves constant manoeuvring around parked cars.

You should have to pay some kind of extra council tax to park on the street, that might encourage people to be considerate and use their drives more to clear the way for traffic.

Well, it’s obviously not the same as driving rather than taking the bus.

I just think parking on public roads shouldn’t be restricted by householders. Simple really.

Washingwater · 18/02/2026 17:57

Our old drive was steep and really narrow but we also felt it kind of risky due to our young dc running around the gardens. But our street had plenty of parking as everyone had drives. I think some keep their drive free for family coming home later and visitors. Annoying but what can you do.

I think the opposite, people should only be allowed to buy a car if they can prove they have a space to park it - it would solve so many problems

But you can park it - on the street! Which would be a lot easier if drives didn’t remove parking spaces.

Sprockergirl · 18/02/2026 18:04

We have 2 cars and 1 drive, I always park my car on the road because it's smaller. So it might look like I'm parking on the road when the drive is empty but DH will park on it later in the day 😄

Oh interesting!

elevenpiperspiping · 18/02/2026 18:09

My NDN always parks across their drive as they don’t like other cars parking in front of their house. Insane

LakieLady · 18/02/2026 18:09

My drive slopes up from the road and is narrow, so you have to reverse into it or you can't open the door on the driver's side. There's only a tiny gap between the car and the edge of the lawn, which is about a foot higher than the drive. It's like getting out of a very low sports car.

My knees are knackered (arthritis) and I simply can't get out of the car if I park in the drive, so I park on the road.

In our previous house we had no drive, it was a dead end cul de sac and parking was a nightmare. Our quite new car was written off in the middle of the night by teenage joyriders in a stolen car (I never knew that if there is no one to claim from its an at fault claim on your own insurance!)

Moved shortly after, large driveway for our cars plus visitors was a priority.

I don't - tiny drive and gap to get in, so is a pain to get in and out. Makes putting bins in and out difficult. Looks more pleasant without a car on the drive. Only use the car once every few weeks, so it's not a problem if I have to park a couple of minutes away.

Looks more pleasant?!

I agree, use more public transport!

Bikergran · 19/02/2026 08:39

If I had my way, anyone with a drive would have to pay to park onstreet.

My current peeve...I live "up north" near a big flat main road, with hilly side streets. So if snow is forecast, people living on the side streets park on the main road, in case they can't get up/down their own street. Fair enough. However, if there are more than a few flakes of snow, they're too scared to drive at all. This means the road is reduced to half its width until the snow clears by parked cars both sides and the snowplough/gritters can't clear the whole road. Stupid idiots.

Gloriia · 19/02/2026 10:47

'If I had my way, anyone with a drive would have to pay to park onstreet'

Yes I mentioned this earlier it'd be very easy to implement, councils could charge £100 a year to get an on street parking permit. I bet suddenly everyone would be more than able to use their drives Grin.

Fine by me. An long as everyone with more than 1 car per household also has to pay

I would happily pay, although I suspect the collection of cars one of my neighbours had would rapidly reduce and solve the problem in our street immediately

Jamesblonde2 · 19/02/2026 13:01

My God, people need to learn to reverse park if they’re concerned about it being a driving issue for not parking on their drive. It’s really easy! Position the ring mirrors correctly!

nomas · 19/02/2026 13:07

I have a double drive with a double dropped kerb and double yellow lines in London.

I rarely park on the road but the double dropped kerb means that Ambulances, and delivery vans often park fully on the pavement, or recycling trucks park on the dropped kerb, so I am sometimes blocked in or out of my drive.

When I park on the road to leave a space for guests or trades to park in, it definitely feels weird, like the car is out of sight.

YourGreenCat · 19/02/2026 13:28

If I had my way, anyone with a drive would have to pay to park onstreet

that means everyone would have to pay full stop - which is already the case in many places, parking permits are not free.

Happy to pay, but then that means if I pay, I am completely entitled not to park on my drive.
