Neighbours parcel

I got home late on Thursday night and found a parcel outside my front door. It had my address on it, but the name was someone I didn’t know. It was almost 11pm, so I didn’t knock on neighbours doors to see if they recognised the name. I had work on Friday and had to leave the house at 7am, then after work, I went straight to my partner’s house (which is an hour away) to spend the weekend there.

On Saturday morning, my friend tagged me in a post on the local notice board. A woman who lives three doors down was asking if anyone knew who lived at no 29 (me) because she had been trying to get her parcel back since Friday. I sent her a private message letting her know I was away for the weekend but would be back Monday evening if she wanted to pick it up then. Then I got a bunch of messages saying she needed it urgently because it was a gift for someone and she was supposed to drop it off on Saturday night. She asked if I could come back, but I explained that I was over an hour away and wouldn’t be able to return (we had lunch plans with my partner’s parents that day). It would have been a hassle to go home and then drive all the way back. She asked me if I was refusing to give her parcel back. I told her that wasn’t the case, I just wasn’t home right now???

This evening, I left the parcel outside my door because I wasn’t sure how she would react if she saw me, and I wanted to avoid any confrontation. I feel like it’s an unfortunate situation, but it was her mistake, and there wasn’t much else I could do (other than drive all the way home and change my plans).

AIBU? Was her request reasonable, or could I have done more?

Can't see you've done anything wrong here, I assume she selected the wrong house number when completing the order.
Or if she completed it correctly and the supplier got it wrong she can complain to them and get some compo.
It's not on you to drive a 2 hour round trip to resolve it

Ninerainbows · 17/02/2026 18:38

You did nothing wrong. You weren't even in when they left it!

HelplessSoul · 17/02/2026 18:39

The neighbour is a cunt for deliberately using your address.

You should have fucking thrown it through her living room window or back garden to ensure she got it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2026 18:40

I don't think the neighbour made a mistake - she sounds like a complete CF.

itsmeits · 17/02/2026 18:42

No you weren't unreasonable.

She is, she puts the wrong address on a parcel then demands you deliver it.

Life lesson for her check the delivery address before confirming

50NotFat · 17/02/2026 18:42

She may not have done it deliberately. I once sent a very expensive pair of trainers to the house over the road as I selected the wrong house number when scrolling through. She was a twat in the way she responded to you though!

NomTook · 17/02/2026 18:43

Well hopefully she’s learned a lesson about using the right address when she orders things.

Oxo01 · 17/02/2026 18:45

If you have a ring or camera of some sought I would have given her it in person so you have proof it was given to her considering she thinks you were at her beck and call for her parcel. She could say you did not give it to her.

SilverPink · 17/02/2026 18:46

Well, it will teach her, 1, to put the correct address, and 2, not to leave gift buying until the last minute

7238SM · 17/02/2026 18:46

I wouldn't have driven a 2hr round trip back either.

Has she collected it yet?

Cardinalita90 · 17/02/2026 18:51

Not unreasonable. Don't accept any more parcels for this woman ever (I know you technically didn't, but if someone ever knocks - refuse it)

RockaLock · 17/02/2026 19:00

It may not have been her mistake. I recently had a parcel delivered to no 39 when I am no 31 - my order confirmation said delivery address no 31, but the (printed) delivery label said 39. No idea how the retailer managed that, but I’ve not used them since.

But anyway, you are definitely not the unreasonable one here!

FuzzyWolf · 17/02/2026 19:04

YANBU. If she hasn’t collected it yet, I’d be inclined to return to sender and say you were concerned it was a scam as it was sent to the wrong address and the person named doesn’t live there.

Twinkylightsg · 17/02/2026 19:07

I would be screenshotting her private messages onto the same board. Saying she ordered something to your house and then got annoyed with you about not being home because she needed the parcel. She also hadn't spoken to you beforehand and is using your address without consent.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 17/02/2026 19:10

Good grief some people's neighbours are unhinged! She's annoyed about the mis - delivery and expecting you to fix it. You were away, expecting you to come back is ridiculously self centred.

Rainbowdottie · 17/02/2026 19:13

Tbh I’d put it out of your mind. Either she has made a mistake or the courier has, nothing to do with you. I wouldn’t have driven back and whilst her situation is unfortunate, I don’t think it has anything to do with you. My husband and I have decided not to take any parcels in anymore…no we’re not miserable 😆 it was just becoming too much in volume and disturbance and some neighbours weren’t even coming to collect them….so maybe moving forward , just make it clear to couriers , either in person or a note on your door that you’re no longer accepting parcels for other addresses. Albeit I grant you that’s difficult if she’s put the wrong number on the parcel and the courier genuinely thinks it’s for your house. But tbh if that’s the case, it’s all her own doing! I would not expect any neighbours to drive back for me or interfere with their weekend, it’s a bit much from her I think
