To say you can’t get cosy in Summer?

So this is just a lighthearted thread.

You know on mumsnet when we have those threads about who likes Summer and who likes Winter. You’ll always get a divide and people giving reasons why they prefer one or the other.

There was a thread recently and people were saying that they liked getting cosy in Winter. Someone replied to say that was nonsense and that you could get cosy in Summer if you wanted to.

Aibu to say that Summer is a lot of lovely things, but it definitely isn’t cosy.

Cosy to me is curling up under a blanket, fire on, low lighting, or getting in bed with a hot water bottle and a big duvet.

I kept thinking afterwards, how do you get cosy in Summer? 🤣

Cozy in summer is a sun lounger, a cocktail, a good book and a comfy pillow

Or a hammock with a view and a Pimms.

limegreenheart · 17/02/2026 15:14

In my head I think I need a cold-to-hot contrast before I think "cosy" - so, for example, taking a swim in the (British Summer Time-temperature) ocean and coming out to pull on a cover-up or beach towel that's been baking in the sun.

GasPanic · 17/02/2026 15:18

Oh dear.

We are still in a dark dreary cold rainy winter and already the (somewhat oblique) moaning about summer has started.

It's a bit like Christmas, gets earlier every year.

All lighthearted comments. Of course.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/02/2026 15:18

Hard agree

unless by cosy people mean laying naked and still infront of the industrial fan to avoid getting even more sweaty, with a towel under your boobs to mop up that sweat

with the tv up loud so you can hear it over the bloody fan

whilst moaning about it being too hot

Egglio · 17/02/2026 15:19

I endure being outside in the summer heat, rather than enjoy it, so there is no cosiness in summer for me. But I do think being cosy is quite personal. For me it's being in a hot bath, or in bed with a hot water bottle, or on the sofa under a blanket with DP. I don't do any of those things in summer.

JassyRadlett · 17/02/2026 15:20

"Live in Britain" answers your question about how to get cosy in summer. Because the chances are that at least half the summer will be chilly and damp.

Well firstly I’m not moaning about Summer. I said that there are lots of lovely things about Summer but cosy isn’t one of them.

FYI I’m quite looking forward to lighter evenings, flowers blooming, drying my washing outside (hopefully), leaves on the trees.

I don’t control the weather unfortunately I just try to make the best of each season 🤷‍♀️

I definitely still get cosy. Curtains shut, fire on just the light mode, fan on, light blanket on, candles.

CloakedInGucci · 17/02/2026 15:26

I agree. A sun lounger, drink, book, and just relaxing in the warmth is lovely. But I wouldn’t use the word “cosy”. Blissful, dreamy, relaxing. But not cosy.

I reckon that’s what it is with me the hot cold contrast.

I live in England where it’s definitely possibly to be cosy in summer (because it’s torrential rain and cold outside, despite the time of year)!

Probably best to just embrace summer for what it is then and enjoy the variety in living rather than thinking about how you can make it compatible with fundamentally uncompatible things like hot water bottles, blankets and raging fires and concepts like "cosy".

BubbleFree · 17/02/2026 15:38

I’m in Scotland and I absolutely refuse to have anything cosy from the beginning of February, I’m scunnered with cosy season. The washing was on the line today, it was sunny and there’s a feeling of spring approaching in the air, my spring bulbs are up and the mornings and evenings are getting lighter. We do nothing cosy until at least the end of October, I cling on to summer as long as I can.

BuddhaAtSea · 17/02/2026 15:39

Ok, hear me out: a short drive to the beach at about 2pm via the farm shop (fresh fruit, fresh baked pastries): set up camp on the beach, cushion, book, strawberries to munch on, swim..and then nap for a couple of hours. That to me is cosy!

Or: after boiling at work the whole day, jump in the sea, cool down watching the sun come down while you’re floating about, come out and grab a portion of chips and a beer and watch the sun disappear wrapped in a blanket. Cosy!

Or: Friday evening, fairy lights on in the back garden, nibbles and wine with girlfriends putting the world to right long into the night.

Or: early start, a cycle to a beauty spot with your coffee and a croissant, a book or your jurnal, take a couple of hours to just be, cycle back. That’s cosy too.

NuffSaidSam · 17/02/2026 15:41

YANBU.

You cannot be cosy in summer.

Hillarious · 17/02/2026 15:45

You can certainly get cosy if you’re camping in the summer, especially if you’ve got your duvet and it’s raining outside (and you don’t need the loo).

ginasevern · 17/02/2026 15:50

Cosy would be an odd word to use in the summer. It generally implies a feeling of snugness in a place of warmth and shelter (away from cold weather), or a room in an otherwise cold building. It can also describe things such as blankets or sweaters, which again ratifies it's meaning in relation to the cold. An example of usage from the OED is:

"I felt warm and cosy sitting by the fire".

Morepositivemum · 17/02/2026 15:52

Bare feet and feet up, sun shining on them, towel around you/ towering robe on!

IAmKerplunk · 17/02/2026 15:53

Cosy to me is when it is cold/dreary outside and I am snuggled up inside. I can’t think of any occasion I have described feeling cosy on a hot summers day.

Shame you haven't read the OP properly. She's proposing that the word "cosy" cannot possibly apply to summer. I do wish posters would read more carefully (or reach for their glasses) before commenting.

TiggersTheOnlyOne · 17/02/2026 16:07

Only time I think cosy in the summer is if there is a properly good storm at night and it’s thunder and lightning and pelting rain. Cosy is about gathering everything in and making your world smaller and compact and snug… summer in general is about openness, space, freedom
and freshness

Maraudingmarauders · 17/02/2026 16:09

a mid afternoon nap, on crisp fresh bed linen with the window open so the breeze gently wafts the curtains, you can hear a bit of bird song and you know it’s beautifully sunny and hot outside, but nice and cool in your room…. That to me is absolute bliss and ‘cosy’.

boringingoring · 17/02/2026 16:22

On hot days, when I'm in my hammock as the sun goes down, I get a blanket and a cup of tea, fluff up my pillow, switch on the fairy lights and read for a bit as it cools down. That's cosy, but I agree there aren't many aspects of summer the word can be applied to. Maybe a sauna with too many people in it? 😁

5128gap · 17/02/2026 16:22

Nothing cosier than the garden when the suns gone down after a warm day, the fairy lights come on, you get the fire pit going and a throw round your shoulders.
Except maybe hearing the sea and seeing the glow from other people's lanterns and camp fires when you're tucked up in your tent with your grubby DC after a day on the beach.
