Does anyone else know if they’re lying the ‘wrong’ way round?

Okay, so this is going to sound weird but if I’m away from home as soon as I lie down in the bed to go to sleep I can tell if it’s positioned in a different orientation to my bed at home. For example last night I was in an Airbnb and I just knew that if I was at home the bed would be turned 90 degrees in one direction. My husband checked a compass on his phone and I was right. This isn’t a one off, it happens to me everywhere I sleep that isn’t home. It doesn’t stop me sleeping but it feels ‘wrong’. Does anyone else have this or is it just me me?

Me too!

Goatshavehairyfeet · 16/02/2026 23:11

Yes! I have this. Not so much that it feels wrong but I can feel how it is different from my childhood bed and how it compares to other beds I am used to being in.

spiderlight · 16/02/2026 23:12

My son does this - he's like a human compass! I kind of vaguely know if it's wrong, sometimes, unless I think about it too much, but he's spot on every time.

Keepsmiling2948 · 16/02/2026 23:13

Yep! Definitely a thing I get it too. I can always tell. Strange!

ReluctantSwimMum · 16/02/2026 23:14

Yes I get this too! I assumed it's about where the sun is during the day? But I wonder if it's an innate compass.

MyOtherProfile · 16/02/2026 23:14

Well, I did have this but I don't now. I remember really clearly as a child if I slept somewhere else knowing which way I would be at home.

I haven't thought of it for years and have only now realised I've lost it.

NotTerfNorCis · 16/02/2026 23:14

Oo interesting! Never heard of this, must check bed directions now. 😆

Rituelec · 16/02/2026 23:16

I have this

TansySorrel · 16/02/2026 23:16

No I've never had that. It's quite impressive though

AgentPidge · 16/02/2026 23:16

Are you a pigeon? They have little magnets above their beaks so they can read the earth's magnetic field and know their direction. Actually I have heard of humans being able to do this.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 16/02/2026 23:17

I didn’t think so but literally now i have thought about it, I can tell that I am in a different position to when i was at a hotel for example

well I think I can 😂

ColdAsAWitches · 16/02/2026 23:17

I have a very good internal compass. I always know where north is. But sleeping in a different bed doesn't feel wrong in any way.

ScrambledEggs12 · 16/02/2026 23:18

I think for me it's more about where the window is in the room.

BertieBotts · 16/02/2026 23:19

What? No. I am famously terrible with my sense of direction, though.

TakeALookAtTheseSwatches · 16/02/2026 23:20

No but I don't like it if the door is in a different position in relation to me

I've got a terrible sense of direction too (and don't have the bed/compass thing)

Roseyposeypie · 16/02/2026 23:21

Oh my goodness, I’m not alone!

I also wondered whether I could be noticing other subtle signs like the sun but last night we arrived in the dark and the room had black out blinds.

LOL to the pigeon comment… that’s what DH said too!

You've got a lodestone in your head, me and my sister are good at directions and think we've got one each . Our dad was a navigator so must be genetic ,

Muffsies · 16/02/2026 23:24

Can tell which way around i am, but it doesn't bother me if i sleep in a different direction, as long as i'm on the side of the bed that's furthest from the door. I think most people know their orientation if they stop to think about it.

nondrinker1985 · 16/02/2026 23:24

Yes!!

Nuncheon · 16/02/2026 23:26

Absolutely. It’s one of the reasons I always sleep poorly my first night somewhere. I’m dreadful at distinguishing left and right, but have a good sense of compass direction.

Goonie1 · 16/02/2026 23:28

I have this. It makes me feel like I’m lying upside down as in my feet are higher than my head. Im
obviously not but that’s the sensation I get.
I also get a terrible headache when a storm
is coming or if there was a sudden change to the weather. My mum called me the weather lady. I think it’s to do with the air pressure. I wonder if the 2 are connected in any way.

Shitmonger · 16/02/2026 23:31

Me too! I prefer the head of my bed to face north and can always tell when it doesn’t.

I also get the storm headache thing but I never considered that the two might be related.

Not only a compass, also a barometer!
