I was drying my hair and all of a sudden it started sparking. It caught my hand and is burnt. I’ve rinsed it but it’s not got much of the black off and has lightened an area of my skin with some redness. It’s not overally painful but is quite sore and stingy.

I would get it looked at personally, but I'm not any kind of medical professional.

Hope you feel better soon!

Fodencat · 16/02/2026 15:54

I’d put a bit of Savlon on it

KeepOffTheQuinoa · 16/02/2026 15:55

Get it looked at - do you have a minor injuries unit?

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 16/02/2026 15:57

Yes, anything with blistering or charring needs to be seen. I’m surprised you’re not howling in pain. Burns are something which should always be taken seriously.

TiredofLDN · 16/02/2026 15:57

I would definitely go to a minor injuries Centre with that. Burns on hands become infected easily. Also the fact it’s around a joint will make it harder to look after- you don’t want it to heal badly and reduce movement in your finger if the skin tightens.

TiredofLDN · 16/02/2026 15:58

Also - meant to add- your skin is literally charred.

You’re sure you didn’t get an electric shock as well?

Swiftie1878 · 16/02/2026 15:58

Put a LOT of Savlon on it. You don’t want it to get infected!

TheChosenTwo · 16/02/2026 15:58

Ooh ouch! I’d just leave it personally, will probably heal on its own. I wouldn’t be applying anything to it either. It’s in a very annoying position on your hand isn’t it?
But I’m not a medical professional!

Mumsworkneverdone · 16/02/2026 15:59

ex turns nurse here I don’t like the look of the yellow bit in the middle , could be deeper. Please get this looked at today.

Mumsworkneverdone · 16/02/2026 15:59

Should say ex burns nurse sorry!

saltandvinegarpringles · 16/02/2026 16:02

I'm surprised at the answers, it honestly wouldn't have occurred to me to get a small, painless burn looked at in hospital.

FcukBreastCancer · 16/02/2026 16:03

Ouch. Yes minor injuries for me.

A painless burn is more likely to be serious.

A painless burn is more likely to be serious.

Exactly, it indicates nerve damage.

CurlyWurly07 · 16/02/2026 16:09

Thank you. I think looking closely with a light, it has took a layer of skin maybe, where the yellow/white bit is

CurlyWurly07 · 16/02/2026 16:09

It’s not painful, is a bit stingy in waves

I’d put some cream on and ring the doctors in the morning.

Me too, rarely a week goes by where I don't burn myself on some kitchen appliance, hair curler or iron! I've got one right now actually in a very similar spot, can't even remember what did it?

Although, to be fair, my burns are normally red I've never had a black mark before, so maybe that's why people are concerned, is it a deep electrical shock maybe?

StopWindingBobStopWinding · 16/02/2026 16:10

NHS advice is very clear. Burn on the hand, and any burn with charring, needs medical attention.

Don't put anything on a burn. If it is painless that means nerve damage and dead tissue. It needs to be assessed asap.

I’d be in a&e constantly. Only 2 weeks ago did I get a large burn on my hand. Got a nice red scar currently.

I might make the same decision for myself, because I am confident I can avoid infection, but I’d still seek help for a burn on a joint or one with actual charring. OP has asked for advice and this is the official advice.

That's why she needs to be seen asap. There must be nerve damage and dead tissue.

FlorenceBlack · 16/02/2026 16:14

I’ve had this happen twice, with a twenty year gap in between, and didn’t go to A&E either time. Have since been told that I should have done because they’re classed as electrical burns but I didn’t have any issues so no harm done.

NotMeAtAll · 16/02/2026 16:18

Between this and the girl who needed a skin graft on her forehead after a visit to the hairdresser, I think I'll just shave my head. 😮
