DS walked into an iron gate

I’m always anxious when it comes to head injuries.

My 7 year old DS walked into an iron gate at a cathedral about 30 mins ago.
He cried a lot and didn’t lose consciousness. Hasn’t been sick or anything. Seems a bit quiet but since having a Macdonalds has stopped crying.

He’s got a bruise/bump on his forehead.

Do I need to call 111 or go to urgent care with him?

I am not a medical professional but I think if he really just walked into it and bumped it then I would just keep an eye on him.

I don't think the force of just walking in would cause much of an injury?

Is there a first aid place at the venue where you are?

KilkennyCats · 16/02/2026 13:16

Was he walking or running?

The force involved if he was just walking along would obviously be far less than cannoning into it.

ShodAndShadySenators · 16/02/2026 13:16

I'd give him some Calpol - a bump to the head that causes swelling will be painful - and just keep an eye on him. He hasn't got any concerning symptoms, it's likely superficial.

I did this with my own gate and the bump came up really quickly and bruised badly. I didn't need any interventions, all the damage was to the skin/tissue layer and not any deeper.

Yes he was just walking - literally just looking the wrong way and walked into it , he’d just set off from a standing position

That is not a medical emergency op. Obviously keep an eye on any worrying signs like vomiting etc (have a check online if you’re not familiar with) but I’d struggle to think he could do much damage walking into a gate.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 16/02/2026 13:26

I would get some ice on it and buy some ibuprofen as that helps with swelling. Wouldn’t do anything else tbh unless he starts vomiting or loses consciousness.

Coconutter24 · 16/02/2026 13:31

Definitely don’t go to urgent care it’s not an emergency. Chances are he’s absolutely fine, kids get bumps all the time but if later on he shows any signs of concussion you could always ring 111

QuickPeachPoet · 16/02/2026 13:51

From walking speed, highly unlikely to be anything serious. Falling off a scooter and crashing into it would be another thing.
He needs to look where he is going in future ehh? How did that happen?

Lighterandbrighter · 16/02/2026 14:02

He'll be fine.

Macadamian · 16/02/2026 14:23

Good grief. At least one of my kids does something like this every single day! Pick up, dust off, sympathy. Not 111.

stackhead · 16/02/2026 14:24

If he didn't lose consciousness, it wasn't at speed or from a height then give him some calpol for his headache and tell him to look where he's going next time.

Ponoka7 · 16/02/2026 14:28

Keep an eye on his pupils, his focusing and darkening below the eyes. Ask him what he remembers about your day. Also if he starts getting confused etc. He shouldn't have done much damage at that speed.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 16/02/2026 15:02

I think all children do something like this at some point. I can remember walking straight into a low sign once. My dad just picked me up and dusted me down (after he stopped laughing 😂)
