Can anyone give me any advice on getting through the next 10+ year. A year ago we adopted two kittens I'm autistic and new I would struggle with a pet but my husband and children had been begging for years and whilst they are the one who take care of them I feel so unhappy I feel like my home is no longer my home it's always covered in cat hair no matter how much I clean they're always going in places they shouldnt be and causing problems I'm finding myself not enjoying my home at all because of them It seems silly but I'm so sad because of them but my kids are bonded and love them so much socwas.hopeing someone had some advice to make things easier. Thank you

Swap cats for dogs ,
and I am in the exact same situation as you .
I can't cope with the barking ,the food smells ,the pooing and weeing on the floor despite a pet flap with 24 hour access to the garden .
The fact they bring mud in to the house all the time ,the neediness ..just all of it ..
I cope by spending a lot of time in my bedroom,as we have a stairgate on the stairs to keep them downstairs
Op ...keep your bedroom door shut and don't allow them in ..at least you will some space away from them

Would you ever think about rehoming @IKnowWhatTheAnswerIs as you are basically banishing your cats from the family space? Living in a garage or a shed is not ideal for any animal and they would probably be happier somewhere else.

I know! What am I reading. This is terrible.

Sorry to derail op. I get where you are coming from. At least you have upstairs.

Not you op but wish people would really think before getting pets.

@Hibernatingsloth catio maybe a wrong term, a kennel of sorts but with free access. I have a clear conscience that I’ve done everything I can and also that they will be fine in the new arrangements. In my many years of looking for advice on this subject it’s always bend over backwards to serve the cat regardless of impact on the humans in the house and I’m just offering OP an alternative view that doing that isn’t the only option.

There is bend over backwards or there is just the middle and give your cats home. You really shouldn't have cats.
Gave them one room , now you want that so a garage.

It is cruel what you are doing.

PURPLErainiswhatmadePrincegreat · 17/02/2026 16:41

get rid of them, as much sweet cats are

Well this thread has been an eye opener. It is assumed by my two cats that they own the house and that we pay the bills. It is clear that - at all times - we should be grateful for the opportunity to worship at the altar of feline enslavement.
I literally never realised that they could be confined to specific parts of the house or given actual boundaries, since they are the master and mistress of this home. I just cheerfully use lint roller night and day for their black hair. They inevitably take the best, warmest seats in the house and we all have to manoeuvre around them. Sometimes I can’t hoover a room for fear of upsetting the adorable dictators.
(I do spray water at my masters if they spring on the kitchen counters though since this is a matter of food hygiene)

Bet your house smells a treat!

socialdilemmawhattodo · 17/02/2026 19:31

I've read your posts. You need the cats to go out during the day, if safe and not horrendous weather. That doesn't totally solve the issues but reduces fur and dust enormously. I have 2 siamese rescues, indoor only. Never again, ever. The fur and dust upsets me, the cat puking, the sneezing etc. So to different to my previous siamese rescue who would be out during the day and in at night. I love my cats. But! For the litter tray smells - it's ghastly don't breathe. Seriously don't breathe. Rush in, deal with poo business. Urine smell is worse. Coffee or a large glass of wine helps. I am nt.

I have to defend the PP here because people aren't reading her posts it seems.

  1. She didn't choose to get cats, she ended up with them
  2. They poo all over the house and she has toddlers
  3. She's tried everything possible to stop them pooing all over the house
  4. They are unrehomeable because nobody wants cats that poo all over the house

In the circumstances those cats are lucky they're not being PTS. What the hell would you do in the situation?

A few people on this thread saying cats shouldn’t live anywhere but a family home. Feral cats are a thing and do fine in barns. A lot of licensed catteries are also technically outside. We approached a local rescue about rehoming but because our cats do not use the litter and toilet in the house we were told it would be pretty impossible to rehome them. And yes I’ve tried everything down to vet prescribed stress medication and changing carpets. @megacat @Puppylucky @HostaCentral @EmpressaurusKitty so please stop being so self righteous. I’m not going to subject my daughter to living amongst cat poo or risk toxoplasmosis for my unborn baby.

Your cats aren't feral though are they? As for toxioplasmosis- there's no one else that could change a litter tray?

I'm sorry this is absurd. Litter tray smells? There's only going to be smells if the trays aren't being cleaned enough. You can get litter trays with covers on them. I personally don't understand why people get indoor cats and then resent them

She said, clearly, in the post that you quoted, that the cats don't use a litter tray. The cats poo on the floor, in the house.

scottishgirl69 · 18/02/2026 10:19

As for people saying rehome. Get rid. Rescues are full to bursting. Rehome on Facebook and you risk animals being used as bait. Pets aren't a commodity that should just be passed around when people have had enough

Cats don't know they are causing inconvenience. No cat should think themselves lucky that they aren't being PTS.

Poor cats. If you didn't want them in the first place you should have said no - rather than looking for coping mechanisms to get through the next ten years. My oldest cat is almost 20

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 18/02/2026 10:22

Spraying water or a no. Plus taking cats off kitchen counters.

They are still young and they will calm down.

Let them out or get a catio.

Friends of mine got Tonkinese siblings and were surprised that they’d randomly shit (accident) in a bedroom. Their teen daughter loves them though and they’ve bonded with her.

Why are these indoor only?

Vigorouslysnuggled · 18/02/2026 10:56

I completely get this as a previous cat owner. They might be clean animals but the environment they live in certainly isn’t! They make such a mess and I will never have one again.

Because some people have indoor cats - that's their choice surely

@Octagonchecker I think people have read her posts and have tried to suggest more humane solutions than just locking the cats in a garage.
I agree she seems to have been landed with the cats but also describes herself as a crazy cat lady (formerly), so on some level must have been keen.
It's hard to believe the cats are pooing all over the house. Cats who reject a litter tray will tend to select a preferred spot instead - still gross but containable. It's also not clear why they won't poo outside.
She has been reassured that the cats can be rehomed with care, so should be looking more into that option.
The solutions she has come up with so far are the epitome of out of sight out of mind - just putting unwanted items into a sealed space and closing the door - which is why people are pushing back.

Well, it's not exactly a sealed space given that they can go outside. They have a lot of freedom just not the house!
Do you have any possible solution beyond looking into rehoming a bit more? What if a home is not found? What else can she do?
People are saying shelters are stocked to the gills. So why would anyone want to take on two cats who shit everywhere when there are other cats available who don't?

BilboBogginsAndHisNoggins · 18/02/2026 14:52

Automatic cat litter tray is a game changer.

If two cats are shitting everywhere I would suspect they are very stressed - cats tend to toilet outside their litter box if it's not changed enough

I would personally take on any cat that needed a home. None of my rescue cats have ever had issues using litter trays - apart from one - and I just put papers down for her

Your cat isn't a mind reader. They don't know they are doing anything wrong. If people can't cope with having cats - why have them in the first place?

Puppylucky · 18/02/2026 18:14

What is so interesting about this thread is how many people see cats as "lesser" somehow. I'm not talking about vs humans, but within the pet hierarchy. They expect cats to tolerate indifference and lack of care that they probably wouldn't dream of subjecting a dog to, but somehow it's ok because it's "only a cat". There is a thread on the Dog owners board at the moment, where the poster has been dealing with a reactive and highly anxious dog for years, meaning that she can no longer leave the house comfortably and she is still willing to try to help him. By contrast, if cats don't act as furry toys or support animals they are rejected. It makes me very sad.

But lots of cats at least enjoy a catio or to be out. I don’t get indoor cats.
