To come back tipsy to babysitter

My partner and I are going on a rare evening out, leaving our kids (12 and 10) in the care of a new babysitter.

We'll be back around midnight. I'd like to be able to have a few drinks whilst I'm out. Is it okay to return home a bit tipsy?

What is an acceptable number of drinks to have?

I wouldn’t judge the number of drinks by what the babysitter thinks, I’d judge it by how many until you’re unable to safely be able to look after your children or respond appropriately to an emergency situation. That’s the only thing that matters.

As long as the babysitter doesn’t have to put you and your husband to bed when you stagger in, I’m sure a few drinks will be fine. You know your tolerance so go out and enjoy yourself!

Oh god, I did once have to put the mum to bed. She was my mums friend so it wasn't too bad but I did end up sleeping on the sofa and having a toddler peeing the bed, neither he nor I knew where sheets were so had him on the sofa with me the rest of the night. God a bloody good tip that night.

I know I will be in the minority but if I'm going back home to children I just didn't drink. Couldn't imagine turning up at hospital with a sick child rearing of alcohol.
it actually happened my son needed emergency surgery thankfully I hadn't drank alcohol

One of you needs to be sober enough to be comfortable dealing with if the 10/12 year old suddenly come down with an illness (or other emergency) after the babysitter has left. If you're ok to be left in charge of DC, you're ok to pay and see the babysitter out.

So parents can never get drunk together?

I had to put my friend to bed a few weeks ago when they came home after a night out. Dad was fine, mum needed a bucket by the bed. I dealt with mum while he resettled the 2 year old who’d wakened up at mum falling up the stairs. I suppose not drinking for nearly 3 years and having 4 glasses of wine does that to you 🤣.

I don't think they should both be incapacitated levels of drunk unless the kids are sleeping elsewhere. Doesn't mean they can't drink, but IMO at least one of them should still be sensible and capable enough to get the pre-teen a bucket and change vomit covered bedding, if needed.

Fine as long as it is just tipsy and you know never to drink and drive and not to drive the babysitter home either.

Bruisername · 16/02/2026 08:20

My babysitter has a nightmare with one couple. 2am a taxi driver rings the bell and the mum is passed out in the back so he helps her carry her in and babysitter puts her to bed. Cabbie tells her they’d had a massive fight and the dad had jumped out and walked off. He turns up and hour later worse for wear and tells her to go but she felt uncomfortable leaving the kids (baby and toddler) so said because it was so late could she sleep on the sofa. Kids up at 6am and no sign of the parents until 2pm!

Wakened up is not incorrect, it's just weird.

She's a bit of a hero staying in a potentially risky situation to protect the kids. I hope she was well paid for the extra time and there was some acknowledgement of the issues.....

So is pulling someone up on it, truly, if this is all you have to entertain yourself with, get a hobby.

Nope! They paid her for her time and asked if she’d come back the following Friday!!

Why do you do it? Many people can spot typos, spelling mistakes and incorrect grammar but don't feel the need to point it out. It comes across as mean, not clever.
