School run ear wax

Everyday at pick up I see two siblings who have visible ear wax, there is so much of it that it’s easily visible on the outside of the ear and around it. I’ve heard a few kids commenting that it’s gross. Aibu to think the parents should address this and that it’s not normal or nice for their kids. (Primary school aged kids).

This exactly. You’d think if the parent couldn’t care less maybe a grandparent would notice at least.

Yeah, okay. You’ve made your opinion of the parents very clear. You can give it a rest now.

I’m a teacher and the amount of children from
reception up who have no idea how to wipe their nose just baffles me. Why don’t parents teach their children how to do this?

My dgd is 21 months old and her daddy came to get her out of her cot as she had started making a noise. Her nose was running and she was trying to wipe it with her hands - she kept saying little manthide needs a tissue!

DS used to get lots of ear infections that resulted in “leaky” ears. It could take several weeks and 3 different types of antibiotics to clear it. Obviously would clean around the ear regularly but five minutes later you could turn round and there was more runny ear wax leaking out.

One of My daughters constantly has a snotty nose she has had it for so long she doesn’t feel it run down. She’s had operations different allergy tests different diets blood tests nasal sprays… nothing has helped 😩😩🥹🥹 I have been fighting for years with no change. So please do not judge!!!!! If anyone has any ideas please let me know as the professional's have been useless ent & allergy keep referring g her to each other! Operations which don’t work that risk her life each time!

Morepositivemum · 16/02/2026 22:21

None of my kids have ever had this and actually I’ve never seen this with other kids so perhaps they have a medical issue and it’s being looked at. A girl in my class in school used to be bullied for the amount of snot she always had, she was always blowing her nose or wiping her sleeve but she had to have a series of operations. Crazy how people judge without talking to the parents

Neglect? Really?! I’ve never gone out of my way to clean wax out of my children’s ears and there isn’t any that can be seen. It’s abnormal for excessive ear wax and ears aren’t designed to be cleaned.

For such obvious wax, it’s far more likely to be something like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis rather than neglect.

Well if it’s not been addressed with a GP that’s neglect. I had a bad reaction to some ear drops I used for blocked ears. Dr said it was eczema I did used to get it in my ears as a child. He prescribed me some drops and antibiotics. Most wax is washed away when we wash our hair. So if they are that bad they their not washing enough or they have an infection.

One of mine had what felt like constant glue ear - infection after infection which would leak, sometimes unexpectedly. He also had wonky adenoids and was prone to tonsil stones so he sometimes had breath that would stun a pig. He had a couple of operations to rectify things and so far, it’s pretty much worked. Interesting to know that other parents will have had their judgey pants up the crack of their hole.

Supportedinstep · 16/02/2026 22:29

And his ENT consultant was emphatic that no one should be syringing any holes anywhere.

I don’t judge children having a runny nose, no one can help it, I just can’t understand why they don’t learn to wipe it. There are a lot of 3,4 and 5 year olds who stand there bewildered when you give them
a tissue and ask them to wipe their nose.

StarlightRobot · 17/02/2026 10:25

OP, I think you are being a bit judgmental.

Stuckinthemiddlewithyouuhoh · 20/02/2026 00:48

Tbh I wouldnt even notice this, let alone think its neglect and to report it
