Sorry it’s a parking one

This is totally unreasonable right?
Local ASDA convenience store and garage in my small town has there empty delivery cages permanently stored in their one and only disabled parking spot. Granted it is the closest space to where their deliveries come in and they don’t have much room. But surely if they need the space so much they should be duty bound to put in another disabled parking space and reallocate the current one to a permanent delivery cages store. Car park has around 12 spaces in total. I have reported to ASDA and also to the manager in the store and neither were remotely interested. Would I be unreasonable to go to the local press / Facebook about it?

YABU - they own the land and they can do what they want
YANBU - you are right to say this is not ok and keep reporting to ASDA.

If it’s one of the small local stores I expect the carpark is pretty small. And it’s also a private carpark. So I would expect their solution to your complaint would be to paint over the disabled bay to create an official storage area, then just make one of the other bays the disabled bay. Sorted.

As I said in the OP this would be fine. But it has not been done. I first made the point to them in December 2024. I have made several complaints both in the store and to head office since. Nothing has changed.

I think you need to get a hobby.

YABU … but only because of your username. Arse. It’s been years!!

YANBU! I'm not sure what the law is but surely car parks have to provide a certain number/percentage of disabled spaces private or not? If asda aren't helpful perhaps try the local council? Could you just park in front of them?

Why? For added context not that it matters but I work with adults with disabilities. Accessibility matters.

No unfortunately not as that would block the exits from the pumps.

No there’s no percentage or number of spaces legally required in private car parks, although a certain % is encouraged, and blue badges don’t automatically apply (although of course private car parks can implement the rule themselves that only blue badge holders can park in the spaces).
But they are required by the equality act to make sure the car park is accessible for disabled people, which includes providing disabled spaces. And it looks like they are failing on that here.

yanbu - contact local paper & post online about it-there will be much gnashing of teeth!

Wonkywalker · 13/02/2026 18:43

Thanks for trying to sort this. I have a blue badge as I need a wide space to exit the car and if there isn't one I have to go home.

At the only shop I can drive to (because I can't drive far) they use one of the disabled spaces to store extra shopping trolleys. I have tried mentioning it but nothing happens - the supermarket is obviously happy to lose out on some people's money. Incredibly frustrating

Well... that might encourage them to move them 😉

If it's a busy carpark it's probably difficult to get parked disabled or not.

It's not much to ask.

Ahh, ok. I'm actually quite surprised by that, thank you for responding.
