My 16 month old developed a rash in early December, I initially went to the chemist who recommended piriton and I took him the doctor who said it was a viral rash and prescribed E45 rash cream and antibiotics because some of the rash looked infected.
I then took him back as it was getting worse and the doctor said he didn’t know what it was and would refer him to a specialist as he suspected scabies but thought it could be eczema although it didn’t look like eczema.

We then took him to a clinic after an 111 call because he was scratching so much he was bleeding all over and he was getting worse by the day, they suggested an anti allergy cream. None of this helped and he continued to get worse each day.
We then noticed spots appearing on us and his spots getting infected again.
I took him back to the doctor and this doctor said he was almost certain it was scabies.
He prescribed treatment for scabies for him but I asked if we could have enough treatment for the whole house hold as we had similar symptoms, he said no, only he needs to be treated, we had him the treatment and it seems to have helped but ours have persisted and he is still itching and getting bites/rashes, I think we have reinfected him.
I have read the whole house hold should be treated at the same time to prevent reinfection but he didn’t agree.
Should I get a second opinion?
We have been going through this nearly 3 months.

If scabies treat the whole house. Sorry it’s so hard!

Ask to see another GP. You all need to be treated to prevent re-infection.

Yep, the whole house needs to be treated. All bedding and towels washed on a high heat and probably any teddys he has.

Are you sure the gp didn’t say that he only prescribes for your son? You can buy the treatment over the counter or see a pharmacist for the rest of the family.

No I said what about the rest of the family which is 2 other children and two adults and he said no, they don’t need it just the baby.
I have been washing all clothes and bedding on a 60 and tumble drying but it’s pointless if we all have signs even if we don’t have the all over body rash he does, we have sporadic clusters of spots and itching.
I have a letter from the paediatritan referral and it says our referral is under review and we could be given an appointment or added to a waiting list or just given advice but waiting times are long.

Ask for a new GP.

Buy a super duper toxic spray for the home as well as treating all the bedding. You even need to spray the inside of wardrobes, washing baskets etc...

This tells you exactly how scabies should be treated. I would send a message to your GP surgery and request that they treat the household as per CKS guidelines. That’s if you can’t get it OTC. The tablets work quite well.

One of the first questions I asked a patient who called 111 for treatment was ‘the rest of your household needs treating, have they been seen/spoken to?’

The GP needs training and I would email the surgery about it. There’s a huge rise in scabies infections at the moment.
