To ask for your help with interview prep

Apologies for the the AIBU, but I need some high traffic,

I have an interview tomorrow for a promotion, which I would love, problem is, I really do know my stuff, but I'm terrible in an interview situation, I panic and waffle on. I've been prepping for days and I feel even more confused and overloaded and so under prepared.

The job is in procurement and contracts and is for my local council, so sometimes the interview questions are a bit off the wall!

Does anyone have any help, tips, example questions that will help me tomorrow (and sleep tonight) I've learnt so much from Mumsnet, so I thought, why not ask here!

Look at the introverted recruiter on Instagram, such brilliant advice. Good luck! I have a big interview tomorrow.

Talk slowly.

If the interview is tomorrow, one of the best things you can do is switch off and have a relaxing evening not taken with trying to cram your brain with more stuff. Sometimes too much is worse.

Put it down, switch it off, have a brew, watch a film, have a bath, early to bed?

Do you have any idea what format the internet will take? Is it compentency based? Do they ask for examples? If so use the STAR method.. it will break down your example really well. Make sure you have strong examples.. chat gpt is your friend here too!

I conducted some interviews recently.
The best candidates were enthusiastic about the role & organisation, and came across as positive people.

They showed they had prepared for the interview (as you have) and could talk easily about their everyday experiences in the field. I would never expect them to quote legislation or reference policy numbers.

Yes, they did need a few examples of situations where they led a group/faced a challenge/ considered the wider impact of their work, but they were at their best when they stopped trying to remember revised answers and just engaged in conversation.

At the end, I really liked a candidates question to me 'What would you like me to bring to this role' which made me feel she wanted to be a force for good & we could work well as a team.

Best of luck OP, relax and try and get some sleep tonight. You will be grand.

Best advice... Upload job description onto chat gpt/Co pilot as well as your cv and ask them to conduct a mock interview. Asking you questions one by one and then giving you feedback before asking the next question. It was invaluable to me recently in terms of getting my responses solid rather than waffling about. Also helped me to think through my answers as I had to type them out so could spend some more time thinking about them

Just having a little browse now! Thank you for the tip! And good luck to you too 😊 will be thinking of you!

Thanks for the tips so far, I think you're right, I've just got out of the bath and made a hot drink and I'll be getting an early night.

Glad you found it useful. I recently got a job, and moved to a 2nd interview for another (hoping I get it), and found it invaluable as well.

Congrats!

Feed the job description into ChatGPT and ask for example questions, that should hopefully give you a bit of an idea what they might ask :)
