College lifts to have sensors/audio sounds

Hi all!

Bit of a random one!
Anyone legally know (UK) laws whether if a college has a lift in the building, that lift should have sensors or audio sounds (beeping/similar) if a student/their belongings touch the doors as they're closing and should open again if that does happen?

YANBU - Yes, they legally should
YABU - No, they legally don't have to

Thank you 🙂

I don’t believe there’s any specific requirement.

There’s various safety legislation which would as a minimum require reasonable measures to avoid serious injury to people from doors closing on them. That’s why most lift doors reopen if you put your foot against them when they’re closing.

It depends on the age of the installation and whether it would have been compliant with legislation at the time of its installation.

There is however a legal requirement for the manufacturer, the installer, and the owner of the premises the lift is in to carry out appropriate risk assessments and to identify and address any safety issues, including retrofitting things like contact sensors and auditory warnings if the risk assessment calls for it. If it’s been identified that the door closing mechanism is insufficient, the college should absolutely be taking steps to address this.
