If so how do they find them? Are they happy wearing them? Have there been any trouble? Also what age did they start using them?

I am considering these for my child but just wamt to find out a but more about them.

Thanks in advance.

Both my DC wear the myopia management daily disposable lenses and both got them around year 5/6. No issues at all and got the hang of them
pretty quickly .

canklesmctacotits · 09/02/2026 21:07

How old is your child?

AllThePickledOnes · 09/02/2026 21:08

I'm an adult now, but started wearing contact lenses for sporty activities at 12. Daily disposable.

They/you just have to be super carful they don't wear them too long (overwear) and/or pick up bad habits like wearing them in water.

Compliance with the guidance can be harder for kids (e.g., like trying to get a kid to clean their teeth properly).

catchingzzzeds · 09/02/2026 21:08

My DS wore them from year 6 and quickly got the hang of them

Amethystanddiamonds · 09/02/2026 21:14

One of my DC also has the myopia management contact lenses. Started young (either Y2 or 3 but can't remember) due to rapidly progressing myopia and the myopia glasses weren't really working, so switched to contacts which have dramatically slowed progression. Is a whizz with her contact lenses and never had any problems.

Salesinjune · 09/02/2026 21:16

These are all really positive, thank you! My child is 10.

My dd started at 12 I think - myopia management disposable like several other pp. she did struggle to start with, getting the hang of inserting them, but then was fine. She’s autistic and often takes longer to learn new habits. I don’t think she’d have been able to manage them any younger but my NT dd would have been fine aged 9/10.

Hazlenuts2016 · 09/02/2026 21:36

Sorry to hijack the thread, but wondering how strong prescriptions were before you all considered contacts for your child? My son is 15 and has a prescription of around -0.75. But is getting worse every time he goes to the optician. He has quite sensitive eyes so I am cautious. Specsavers were trying to get him to try them but I thought it was too early.

Salesinjune · 09/02/2026 21:39

Does he wear glasses? And are they myopia control glasses? @Hazlenuts2016

My nephews/nieces are teens and have been wearing contact lenses since late primary school with no problems.

Hazlenuts2016 · 09/02/2026 22:34

@Salesinjune just has regular glasses for short sightedness but rarely wears them much to my frustration.

frogpigdonkey · 09/02/2026 22:59

I’m 51 and worn contacts pretty much daily since 13. I wouldn’t worry too much, they have improved immensely over the years in terms of risk of damage to eyes compared to when I was young. I would recommend daily disposables if they are likely to be lax on hygiene elements ( or just basically teenagers!). I was always told the big risks were not cleaning properly or excessive wear leading to lack of oxygen to the eye so making sure they take them out at night and clean properly should see them fine.

My DD10 has worn dailies for about a year now. She has worn glasses since she was 4 and picked up lenses very fast and has had no issues. DH and I both wear lenses too, which helped. Her eyesight is horrific, she's so pleased she can wear them swimming and actually see where she's going.

I didn't think the myopic lenses were worth the money personally. Perhaps if we had started her on them sooner, but her eyesight is so dreadful already there didn't seem to be much point.

blueskyview · 10/02/2026 07:47

My daughter has been wearing the myopia control ones since she was 8, it was difficult at first, sometimes she couldn’t get them in or out. I think prescription was about -2 when she started, around -5 now at age 15. I don’t know if they have helped - that’s the thing they are a lot of money and you won’t ever know if it made a difference. She does love wearing contacts now though and wouldn’t want to go back to glasses.

We were told def no swimming with them in.

Salesinjune · 10/02/2026 08:04

Those who were them for myopia control can I ask what time your child takes them out of an evening? Do they have some time lenses free of an evening and how many hours per day they wear them?

My son started wearing daily disposables just before year 7.

No issues at all.

I’m surprised she can wear them swimming. Has this been okayed by her optician?

KurtCobainLover · 10/02/2026 08:08

My DC both wear myopia control contacts and wear them for about 12 hours a day. They both started wearing them in year 6 and although the lenses haven’t halted the progression they’ve slowed it down compared to how quickly my eyes changed at a similar age.

Legdaysucks · 10/02/2026 08:16

My boy is 13 and so far has tried them twice. He's been desperate to lose the glasses but just hasn't been able to get the hang of putting them in himself. This caused him to get very upset so we decided to leave it for a while... Worth thinking about when to trial them e.g. school holidays. Also any top tips for helping get over the initial struggle gratefully received as we will be trying again

sashh · 10/02/2026 08:30

I got mine at 13 and back then you had to take them out to clean them and not wear for more than 12 or 13 hours.

These days you wear them once and throw them away.

There are specialist opticians who will even prescribe for babies.

Letsgogo · 10/02/2026 08:31

I got disposable contact lenses as a child and it was totally life changing!

If she is 10 years old, she still has a lot of myopic change left to go. For example I wasn’t myopic at all at age 10 and I got to -5.00DS by age 18.

Your eyes keep changing until you are about 20, so there’s still 10 years worth of getting more myopic to come - it’s not too late at all and even if her eyesight is “dreadful” already, there are really significant benefits to being -10DS instead of -20DS.

holachicatita · 10/02/2026 08:37

My two boys have wore them since they were 11/12. I'd advise the disposable ones though, they are more expensive but I wouldn't trust them to clean and look after the monthly's properly.

falalalalalalalallama · 10/02/2026 08:39

My DD has myopia management glasses. We just had an appointment for contacts for sport, we're going back to pick them up in a week.

They didn't mention myopia management for the lenses, I didn't know they were even a thing and didn't think to ask!

Will the test be of them or plain ones I wonder?

This cannot have been approved by an optician. NEVER wear them swimming! (Contact lens-wearer since I was 13)
