To think that the press and news love the constant dramas

Since the pandemic it feels like the press loves constant dramas. Now get rid of Starmer, then it will be an election, then look what Reform are doing etc. till we end up like the US.

Welcome to the dollhouse.

Freetobe3 · 09/02/2026 14:44

I mean YANBU but also I don't think that it is necessarily a profound observation. I think the press have and always will prefer drama...it attracts attention and sells by its very nature.

MotherofPufflings · 09/02/2026 14:44

Of course the press loves big news stories, it's what sells papers/clicks. This is nothing new, it's always been like this!

ginasevern · 09/02/2026 14:46

It's their bread and butter. The more drama in the world, the better for the press/news outlets and their revenue.

ChiefChimp · 09/02/2026 14:47

Op read Human Kind by Rutger Bregman . It’s an eye opener as to how 24 news is doing us all no good .

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/02/2026 14:49

Have you ever read a newspaper or a news report? Of course they do, its what sells papers/drives eyeballs. One of the most stunningly obvious observations I've read on here.

sonjadog · 09/02/2026 14:49

Yes, of course they love drama. Otherwise what would be the story? "Things are going on the same as usual" does not attract customers.

raspberets · 09/02/2026 14:52

A society under constant fear is more easily controlled.

Isittimeformynapyet · 09/02/2026 14:52

It's astonishing you ever thought otherwise @paddleboardingmum

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 09/02/2026 14:56

If you’re the opposition and the government is in crisis, ride the wave; feed the media; revel in it.

Labour did it.

Now Labour supporters just don’t like the attention on this shitty Labour government.

Yes that's a worry and I feel like it's been like this since the pandemic in particular.

Apologies for not being profound enough for some of you here on mumsnet not some kind of philosophy gathering!

YABU to think the news is there for your benefit... its about interactions; clicks... ads, money.. its not about informing you, of course they hype the drama, because it means more interactions.

Many people have discovered how things feel so much worse since Covid paddle, you’re not alone.

YouAndMeDays · 09/02/2026 15:24

"Since the pandemic"?! It's always been like this!

Before the Fixed Term Parliament Act, there would be constant "Is he/she going to call a snap election?", etc etc etc. News organisations thrive on news and speculation.

ClaudiaNaughton · 12/02/2026 13:16

That’s their job
