Morgan McSweeney resigns

Morgan McSweeney has resigned as chief of staff over the Mandleson scandal.

“After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself. When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice.
In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside.
This has not been an easy decision. Much has been written and said about me over the years but my motivations have always been simple: I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first and leads us to a better future for our great country. Only a Labour government will do that..

What do you think, will Starmer be next? I have a feeling that he will have to resign too.
Place your bets..

YABU Starmer will survive
YANBU Starmer will resign

There is something about Streeting that creeps me out. Is it the shiny face?

Yeah. Also a Lego head. Got Co Pilot to recreate WS as a Lego figure.

Aye, sure: is this the same Wes the ACTUAL HEALTH SECRETARY who responded to our son’s paediatric consultant’s letter about inadequate NHS provision for paeds neurodiversity with some sidestepping bullshit about her not being in his constituency?

Jog on.

I’ve never voted Tory in my life but, Jesus Christ, I’m not inclined to vote for the shower of incompetent, self serving, back stabbing asshats currently perambulating around No 10.

Yep Starmer has no qualms at throwing anyone under the bus to save his own skin.

He is the leader and accountable for the Mandelson appointment, he can’t rely on McSweeney going.

He's played his last card anyway, when the Mandelson / Epstein headlines keep coming he’ll have no one else left to blame.

If Epstein/Mandelson doesn't do it then, barring another super injunction, Murdoch will decide his fate.

Today programme on R4 just dug up some quote from Starmer from several years ago, where he said (not verbatim, I can't remember exactly, but the gist of it was)

'I will always take the fall for mistakes made in any organisation I head up, even if it wasn't my mistake personally, because as head of that organisation or team the buck stops with me.'

It's funny how some things are so easy to say when you never think you'll have to actually do it. Like low income people who say they'd definitely not complain about paying very high taxes if they had much more money.

So true.

Yes, the old if I won a load of money via the Lottery I would of course give a large amount to charity. Makes them feel better about themselves knowing that its very unlikely to come to pass.

The UK government could collapse with no leader to take over from Starmer.

Rayner - once her tax issues are resolved. The fact she took the money out of her disabled son's trust fund to fund her move to Brighton with her latest boyfriend who was fired by the LPwill come back to haunt her every single day

Streeting - too linked to Mandelson.

Lammy - completely awful. Not even worth thinking about.

Politics is a dirty game and the sort of people above who are in the running says it all.

If Rayner gets in she will be battered again and again over her tax return, her moral compass and her inability to often shout her mouth off. Tories are scum, AMW nonce etc etc.

Have we really fallen this far that these people are our only choice.
