Or at least easy clean ones

I hate kitchen bin culture

How would a self cleaning bin work?

An easy clean bin is a bin with an easy service to clean

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/02/2026 09:50

I think mine is pretty easy-clean - remove bin liner, wipe inside of bin with a cloth. What part are you struggling with, do you not use a bin liner?

What’s hard to clean about a bin? Disinfectant hot water chuck it out and wipe down?

they’re all detachable now

Its not the cleaning of it I hate but the emptying. Ours have a stupid design where the handles of the inner bit catch the bin bag and rip it. Lazy teens wedge so much into the bin that when anyone goes to empty it it needs force to remove the bag, then it catches on the handles and rips.

I would love a sort of rubbish chute style bin system. Especially for recycling, it would just go straight out into the bins.

Umm what is so hard about cleaning a kitchen bin? I just unclip mine, soak it in hot water with a bit of disintecant and give the outside and the lid a wipe

Pinkwhales · 08/02/2026 15:58

I know someone with a self emptying bin! It has a sensor so opens the lid when needed then when the bin is full it ties up the bin bag and dispenses a new bag. Very expensive though and the replacement cartridges cost a lot too.

I just double bag mine so any horrid spills get caught. Usually only have to change one, then wipe the outside and the lid.

As you have teens this bin emptying becomes something they do. Mine started doing it from secondary school, responsible for either the recycling or kitchen bin and emptied on set days so it was never overfull waiting for someone to empty it. One of the days is the council bin day so they put the bin to the kerb too.

Rota on the fridge, no arguments, same with the dishwasher, everyone should be taking a turn. After all they are preparing for life outside of the home, this is part of being an adult. Feel free to delegate other such chores Grin

My bin is a Brabantia, love it, easy to clean, straight cylinder with a lift off lid and the handles of the bin lines (Costco, never rip) hook over the handles on the outside of the bin. The best part about it is I can use my hand, elbow or foot to touch the bin lid to open it. I have had it almost 20 years. I hate the colour now but considering how much it is to buy another one I am loathe to part with that sort of money.

So emptying and cleaning the bin is the lazy teens' job.

I know what you mean about the bin liner catching on the handle though. But I'm careful to ease it out so it doesn't rip.
