To not wear a bra?

Overthereithink · 08/02/2026 08:08

I stopped bothering about fifteen years ago. I think it was when I had a very long commute and I started taking my bra off in the car and gradually started questioning why I was wearing it at all when I hated it.

It’s been so long now I suppose I’ve semi forgotten most people do wear them (well, women anyway) but I’ve lost five stone recently and wondering if I should reintroduce the bra?

I take mine off at home, but my boobs are perky (for now). I imagine if there’s any droop it must be uncomfortable to go braless.

HawthornFairy · 08/02/2026 10:32

I’ve started wearing Body and Bra non wired bras and they are so comfortable and supportive. I’ve had lots of kids, and lost lots of weight, I’m also a yoga teacher and can easily wear them teaching. Unlike sports bras, they actually give me the perky silhouette I had decades ago which actually took me by surprise 😂.

About 2 years ago I made the swap to croptop-style bras. Sooooo much more comfortable! Just pull them on over your head.
Less lumps and bumps under clothing as well.

Probably wouldn't work for very large breasts though. I'm a 36C and it's fine.

Snackpocket · 08/02/2026 11:15

I’ve love to not wear a bra but I’m a 34G so it would be massively uncomfortable as well as very unflattering in clothes! I’ve got some M&S moulded cup bras which are super comfy, I never get that feeling I need to take them off when I get home. The fit and style of bra you wear makes so much difference to the comfort.

roses2 · 08/02/2026 11:17

I've recently switched from wired to wireless bras, so much more comfortable.

I don’t think I’m particularly small - maybe D or C? But I don’t know … they’ve never bothered me and no one’s ever commented (and they 100% would) I think they are overrated. But I have noticed when I run up and down stairs there is a … slapping noise Blush I think that didn’t happen before as I didn’t run much and also they were probably heavier so didn’t move as much!

People 100% WOULDN’T comment.

I couldn’t abandon mine - I’d look like a sack of potatoes without one.
How do you look? If you’re happy, then of course carry on, but I know I’d be self conscious about my appearance.

Different people are different! I do a lot of exercise and I'm a 32FF, there is absolutely no way I can function without a sports bra! So I wear shock absorber sports bras most days. I find them pretty comfy but they give me a monoboob, so not ideally under normal clothes.

If Im not exercising though I wear a technically not fitting bra, I've been measured at bravissimo loads of times and the bras that technically fit me hurt! The underwires come too high under my armpits and rub and really hurt me. So if I'm not exercising I wear a multi pack 34E from m&s with low wires at the side. It isn't particularly supportive, but better than nothing!

I’d be very wary of a fitting where I ended up feeling uncomfortable. I’ve not had much luck anywhere but Rigby & Peller

BootMaker · 08/02/2026 11:45

I've never worn one, they're still small and perky at 52. It's never even crossed my mind to buy one.

ladyland · 08/02/2026 12:01

I’ve worn crop top/bralettes for years but since I’ve lost weight I find I am reaching for proper bras because they actually look nice on me now and I’m wearing different clothes now I’m happier with my size. I still whip them off eventually, it’s hot and sweaty here just now.

BauhausOfEliott · 08/02/2026 12:20

Wear or don’t wear whatever you like.

Personally, I feel and look a lot better with support. I wear an underwired bra during the day and a wireless one in bed because I find it more comfortable. But you’re more comfortable and confident without one, there’s no need for one.

EBearhug · 08/02/2026 12:31

I wear a crop top type for yoga and just a swimming costume for swimming/aquafit. I wear a bra with one or two tops/dresses that would be too revealing without, but mostly I don't wear one at all, and haven't for years - but I am an A-cup. I would wear one for running, as I used to find that a bit uncomfortable without, but these days, my ankles and knees have strong opinions about me running, so I don't.

My sister inherited her breasts from the other side of the family, and I think she would not decide to go braless any time soon, as she is far bigger than I am, and needs the support.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 08/02/2026 13:31

I used to hate wired bras, and the kind of non wired "support" bras that trussed my tits up and left welts on my shoulders from the damned straps. Always been embarrassingly over endowed, even when normal weight, and in bed at night I'd have to use my hands to rescue my squished tits after turning over in my sleep.

Then I got so fat even the largest sizes were too small, and I found Ulla Popken and her front closure comfort bras. https://www.ullapopken.co.uk/en/lingerie/comfort-bras/front-closure-wirefree-comfort-bra/p/689668539-1100 For a long time I wore the largest size, both day and night, and they were so comfortable that I rarely remembered I was wearing them. I also loved the way they come in a range of ever changing fashion colours, instead of the boring white (or nude or black) otherwise aimed to the doddery old lady market.

I've been losing weight steadily for four years and am having a bit of a panic because Ulla Popken is a German fat lady shop that only does sizes down to 38 in bras and most of their clothing range is sized between 16 and 36. Though recently a few size 14s have appeared so perhaps the WLP-1 revolution is starting to have an impact.

I don't suppose anyone can point me towards equally comfortable, non-wired, front fastening bras in size 36D?

I work in SEN. Trust me, they would Grin

Sometimes I go out without one, but I’m a 34JJ and they are not a firm and pert as they could be!! I wouldn’t go to work without one on though.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/02/2026 14:24

I have never found wearing a bra uncomfy. Have always worn one and when pg wore sleeep ones, partly for support, partly because they were tender.

65, 36DD. Whilst a pencil would no longer drop if inserted underneath, they are passably firm. I suspect because I've always worn a decent bra.

OriginalSkang · 08/02/2026 14:28

My boobs are noticeably lower down without a bra these days. Not wearing one makes me look like a sack of potatoes

If that doesn't affect you or you don't care if it does, crack on!

ZoeyBartlett · 08/02/2026 14:30

One of fab things about retirement is I don’t usually bother with a bra! Only if I’m going to London or wearing something where it’s obvious my giant norks are swinging freely 😳

WonderingWanda · 08/02/2026 14:35

I'm finding all of these posts which say a well fitting bra shouldn't be uncomfortable a bit triggering, like when the midwives tell you a good latch shouldn't hurt. Bra's are horribly uncomfortable and more so than ever now that my boobs are heavier and saggier than ever. There's no way I would go braless ever because silhouette would look horrendous. If the risks of surgery weren't a factor I would have a breast lift and a reduction in an instant.

QuickBlueKoala · 08/02/2026 14:36

Haven’t worn a bra since COVID. not missing it either.
I work a professional job in the city, no issues.
I don’t need to get anything lifted/enhanced, i always feel like a dairy cow advertising my milking abilities if i do.

Mariocatgran · 08/02/2026 14:55

God id die going out without 1 but as soon as im in its off

BillieWiper · 08/02/2026 15:04

I stopped wearing one when I stopped working. I used to get horrendous bouts of costochondritis lasting up to 6 weeks, about two-three times a year. It felt like I was being stabbed every time I breathed. Since the cessation of the brassiere I haven't had one single attack.

I guess I'm in between bra sizes too so they never seemed to fit properly.

So yeah I'm happy to let them hang loose. I do have quite small dense breasts though. I get for some it would be uncomfy if you had no support.

I guess you could wear one when you're going out-out. Just to give yourself a lift/improved silhouette. But it will probably feel awfully restrictive after years of forgoing one. So might even spoil your evening.

I dislike bras so I mostly wear these:

https://www.marksandspencer.com/flexifit-crop-top-bralet/p/clp60438341

Although now I’ve lost weight even underwired bras are comfortable again so I do have some fancy ones for when I want a better shape under tops.

This is what I wear when I have to wear a bra too
