Cat pee - help!

As Penelope Pitstock would say “Haaalpp”.

We have cats and therefore a cat flap, in 20 years of said cat flap we’ve had issues with what our various feline friends have gifted us bit today has brought us a new issue.

a visiting feline friend - no idea where from - who rather than just raid the cat food (oh no went straight for the dog food) but has come in via the cat flap caused a ruckus and sprayed vigorously. I’ve cleaned, and cleaned and the smell remains. Please give me your best cat pee cleaners so I can either go out first thing, Amazon it or something else but I do not want to live with this smell……
cheers

Our cat got upset when we got a dog and started peeing all over a brand new carpet and a chair. We tried lots of cat pee products, but this was the only thing that actually worked https://amzn.eu/d/0cCGSlSd

Cat flaps that work only on your own cat's microchips stop rogue cats entering. Cat pee is the worst smell ever. I had to get a couple of floorboards replaced where the cat kept peeing as nothing else totally eliminated the smell.

If it's in your carpet I recommend this: BISSELL SpotClean Pet, Carpet Cleaner (on Amazon).
I bought this carpet cleaner and it's banished cat sick and urine with no lasting signs. It doesn't show that you've spot cleaned the carpet either, so no obvious patches.

Good old bicarb of soda!

foodtoorder · 07/02/2026 22:30

Surgical spirit if cleaning hard surfaces of it.

I do also find as above bicarbonate of soda.
Or a white vinegar solution.

Failing the there are the pet urine neutralisers on Amazon.

First 3 are very cheap though.

Fab, thanks!

Im looking at microchip cat flaps (🫣)
the room it’s in is basically tiled floors and cabinets but permeating the house and I don’t know where it has “sprayed” there isn’t and obvious spot IYSWIM.

We live really rurally so where on earth this feline friend has travelled from is beyond me, the dog may have scared it off this evening but who knows!

Could it actually be a small fox?

Bikergran · 08/02/2026 08:53

Firstly, have your cat flap changed for one that only recognises your cat(s) microchip(s) so other cats cannot get in.

(You do know all cats now have to be microchipped by law?)

Where is the pee and what has it soaked into? If it's on carpet (we had this!) , we lifted the carpet, threw away and replaced the underlay, scrubbed the underlying floor with bleach, and washed the actual carpet with a specialist enzyme shampoo from our local janitorial supply shop. Then blast the entire area and through the carpet with a steam cleaner. The problem with pee is that the bacteria can regrow after cleaning, so the smell returns, thorough steam cleaning sorts this out.

Re small fox, it doesn’t smell “foxy” - this was my initial thought but it’s definitely “catty” and the culprit has been spotted.

re cat flap - I shouldn’t have to defend myself but we are a fully responsible pet ownership household and every creature is law compliant.

We can’t change catflap quickly (regardless of Amazon delivery speed) because the entire door requires replacing to retrofit a new catflap. So not quick and now expensive.

Interloper obvs thinks he’s onto a good thing as he returned last night and cause a ruckus again.

So any more hints that doesn’t involve me ripping up house tiles etc would be great 🤣 whilst I go back and rewash walls, floors and doors 🤢

Go around shining a torch or walls, cabinets, anything at a reachable height for a cat to spray on.

NemesisInferior · 08/02/2026 15:27

Get a UV torch and you'll be able to see where the marks are, and go at them with an enzyme cleaner.

JudgementalCat · 08/02/2026 15:28

You need an enzyme cleaner. You can get this one at pets at home.

Thanks so much- waiting on the enzyme cleaner to arrive so have sprayed walls and floors liberally with vinegar/water/disinfectant blend until it arrives
