To be sad I'm probably going to get a third degree

I’ve had serious issues throughout my degree including admissions to mental health wards and become homeless. I’m likely to get a third now as my final year grads so far are non submission which will be a re sit capped at 40, the others are 42 and 52.

Does your University have a mitigation system? Have you spoken with your Director of Studies/Academic Advisor/Student Support? Is there an opportunity to retake the year? I am sorry things have been so tough and hope you have enough support in place x

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2026 22:10

You’ve done amazingly well just to carry on in those circumstances! Be proud of yourself!

Willowkins · 07/02/2026 22:15

That's tough @Onempretime7788 Will you get an Hons at least? I agree you could ask for your circumstances to be taken into consideration especially the resit.

MinesaTomCollinsplease · 07/02/2026 22:23

Just wanted to comment that I'm struck at your grit and how you've kept going. That's an amazing quality.

Echo speaking with your uni on this.

MathsMum3 · 07/02/2026 22:31

What formula is used to calculate your final classification? Most universities incorporate 2nd year results in the calculation (maybe worth 20-40% of final mark). If you did well in 2nd year, that could up your class. Universities also often have alternative calculations to ensure a student is not penalised for circumstances affecting just one year (e.g., 2nd year mark can count for 20% or 40% of final grade, whichever gives best outcome).

In short, don't give up now, and make sure you've investigated any mitigating circumstances options.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 07/02/2026 22:33

Is this with the OU or a regular uni?

berlinbaby2025 · 07/02/2026 22:38

You usually have to submit an application for extenuating circumstances at the time (or just after) but it’s worth a try contacting your university to see if they can do anything to help.

iusedtobeasize8 · 07/02/2026 22:40

It’s crap. To be honest a degree classification isn’t the be all and end all. You have a degree!
I had so many issues during my degree. I was raped and had no support from LJMU . As a result my work was rubbish and not what I was capable of.

Happyjoe · 07/02/2026 22:51

To be honest, I totally doff my cap to you in respect. Many students drop out for a lot less and kudos where it's due to you for sticking it out and actually getting through it.

GreenIsTheColourOfMyHoliday · 07/02/2026 22:58

A 3rd Class degree is still a degree (and I believe one with hons?)

It's still an amazing achievement

Be proud of yourself

LadyMacbethWasFierce · 07/02/2026 23:16

You have struggled and persevered and overcome so much. Well done. Be proud.

It is definitely worth speaking to your uni though. Even at this stage. My DD1 died totally unexpectedly in October and DD2 is in the third year of her degree. She is hugely grieving the loss of her sister. Her uni weren’t great at first, but have now got on board with supporting her properly. It’s not too late in the year to try to address your concerns either them.

All that said, don’t be disheartened. Even if uni award you a 3rd. - you have a degree. In the circumstances as you describe this is a huge achievement.

OllyBJolly · 07/02/2026 23:17

I don't think I've ever been asked the class of degree by an employer. As an employer, I don't think I've asked anyone. It's not job predictive in the general business world (I know academia is different.)

You've shown almighty resilience in finishing a degree in circumstances that would have broken others. That's the kind of employee that employers want.

Congratulations when it comes!

SeriouslyStressed · 08/02/2026 14:14

I got a third class degree (with honours) as my dad died in my final year. It’s frustrating but also amazing that I passed at all xxx

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 08/02/2026 14:19

Congratulations on your degree.
