Drivers getting more reluctant to move to let emergency vehicles on blues and twos through

Drive a lot in rush hour traffic having doing Dolly hours (9-5) and recently when an emergency vehicle is coming from behind the traffic, very few move to the side - there is room, until the ambulance is almost touching the other vehicles’ bumpers. Inconsiderate, selfish and ignorant.

Not noticed that where I live

SargeMarge · 07/02/2026 16:43

I always moves unless it’s into a yellow box or through a red light, because I simply don’t have the money to pay a ticket and there are cameras all over the place where I live so won’t risk it.
But I can’t say I’ve seen what you’ve seen, people always juggle about to let them through and always pull off to the side when I’ve seen them.

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 07/02/2026 16:43

Agree. I pulled in one morning last week to make room for an ambulance and a fuckwit woman between me and the ambulance overtook me.

Weekmindedfool · 07/02/2026 16:44

Ah here we go. Cue all the comments about
how Its illegal to go through a red light even for an emergency vehicle and even the police say so and even my DH who is a paramedic says so….does that cover it all?

Silverbirchleaf · 07/02/2026 16:44

Not noticed this at all.

slet · 07/02/2026 16:47

I’ve not noticed this. i am in the far north of England…..

Bunnykins34 · 07/02/2026 16:48

Oh u need to chat to my daughter! Student Paramedic, on 4 wk placement. She's just finished a nightshift last night and she was pretty angry, it's like the truck was completely invisible to road users and that's with blues and twos as well, it's becoming a very regular occurance down this way, I really do feel there frustration 😕

Barrellturn · 07/02/2026 16:49

I've noticed this but suspect it's because a lot of people seem to drive with air pods in and probably don't hear it.

Thewonderfuleveryday · 07/02/2026 16:50

I always drive with my window down a crack so I can hear them coming (from any direction at a roundabout) as well as see them in my mirrors.

ZookeeperSE · 07/02/2026 16:51

Where do you live? In a big city maybe where travel times are getting longer and longer and people are correspondingly getting more impatient? Only asking because that’s not my experience at all here. In fact people trying to get out of the way for an ambulance made our local news site this week! There’s a main route that has huge road works ongoing causing tailbacks for a few miles in a daily basis. Someone took drone footage of a couple of miles worth of traffic trying their best to get off the very narrow and long stretch of single road to let the ambulance through, not an easy task on this particular route.

Oh and editing to add this is in the South East.

Tableforjoan · 07/02/2026 16:52

Because with so many cameras around now ready to fine you people can’t afford to risk it.

Dh has pulled into verges up curbs and all
sorts but would he knowingly risk a fine to move. I doubt it. Unless he knew it was coming to our house at which point he would already be jumping reds himself.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/02/2026 16:56

I've not noticed this, but more importantly where does the term 'dolly hours' come from?

rebeccachoc · 07/02/2026 16:57

I know I move as soon as I see the lights and it's safe to pull over but people but overtake me like they've got no care in the world. I do hope in the future, people will lose their licences for not pulling over.

Dolly Parton… 9 to 5… ringing any bells?

igelkott2026 · 07/02/2026 17:01

I haven't noticed that - I think people are still very good. I have encountered some super-impatient emergency vehicle drivers though - you're in the process of moving and they lean on the horn. You can only move once there's space and in each case (once was my DH, sometimes I see other drivers moving) the driver couldn't have moved any faster.

I do think we should do the German emergency lane, whereby the cars move over to the left (or right depending on what lane they are in) to make a lane in the middle.

Driving with an airpod in? I know people have lost their collective braincells, but really?

99pwithaflake · 07/02/2026 17:02

Never noticed this. We had an ambulance come past us on Thursday and everyone stopped/moved where possible.

Are you the poster who always goes on about not believing that? It’s not a matter up for debate. The law is clear. And if you do get caught by a red light camera, you’ll get a ticket. Appeal will be denied. That is just fact. And I’m in Glasgow with bus lane cameras everywhere and they are desperate to fine for that, so I won’t enter a bus lane either. The bloody ambulance should be in the bus lane.

A ticket is a week’s food shopping for me and my kids and a I just cannot afford it. Is the person in the ambulance going to feed my kids for a week? Because I wouldn’t be able to. That’s life for a lot of people.

I’ll get out of the way as much as possible, even if it means going on the pavement which is also a worry in Scotland with the new pavement parking laws, but there aren’t cameras up looking for that yet.

luckylavender · 07/02/2026 17:04

Doesn’t happen here - Brighton. Road is usually rammed but everyone squeezes out of the way

Craftysue · 07/02/2026 17:05

Not where I live - fairly big city and people are still moving over - just a shame about some of the idiot parking that blocks the roads anyway 😔

By fuckwit I assume that you mean a BMW driver!
(light hearted)

Sunfloweranddaisy · 07/02/2026 17:13

Unless there is a yellow box or the traffic lights are red then people move for them where possible in our city.

Thatcannotberight · 07/02/2026 17:26

Not where I live, two cars nearly ran me and my dog over ( on the pavement) suddenly throwing their cars up out of an ambulances' way. I had nowhere to move to or any time to do it. Fuckwits.

User1367349 · 07/02/2026 17:27

I will pull over if I can. But since it was publicised that you will still get points and fines if you step a toe out of line to allow an ambulance past, I’m much more cautious.

greencheetah · 07/02/2026 17:43

Where do you live? Definitely isn’t happening where I am (SE)
